Fedora Networking :: Remote Connection To Terminal Only?

Mar 26, 2009

I've been able to use connect to my home laptop from school using VNC (and the Remote Desktop Connection program in f10), but since the graphics take forever to stream, it's almost pointless to use it.Is there any way to connect to my home computer, and ONLY get a Terminal?I've googled around and haven't found a concise way to do this... i'm so confused about how this stuff works (esp how it relates to SSH)

Fedora Networking :: Connection From WinXP To 11 Remote Desktop (behind Router)?

Aug 28, 2009

My home linux box is behind a Linksys WRT110 router. I have enabled the Remote Desktop from System-->Preferences-->Remote Desktop. I then run TightVNC from my WinXP box. As I wish to run a secure connection, my first obstacle comes from PuTTY.
In PuTTY, my settings are as follows:

Host Name(or IP address) Port
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 22
SSH-->Tunnels:

[code]....

I recieve "Network error: Connection refused" I have gleened all of this information from other boards and tutorials. I know there is something critical that I am missing.

Fedora Networking :: Port 22 - Connection Refused - Can't Use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" To Vnc

Mar 1, 2011

Friday night I was working on some networking stuff between my two Fedora 14 boxes. I have my laptop and my desktop. on both machines I have "system-config-firewall 1.2.27" and "iptables" (i believe both come standard on F14?) I kept getting the same message as seen below before realizing perhaps I should check my firewall!

I added a rule for incoming and outgoing traffic on port 22 and was able to get in with no problems at all! however today I can't ssh into anything... I can't use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" to vnc into the machine anymore. I can't remember the exact error message at this time, it's something close to "Connection was terminated" or "Unable to connect" I can update this message later.

last night I foolishly uninstalled the system-config-firewall and then uninstalled iptables to see if it was a simple firewall issue.... totally hosed my system <insert smiley!>

After reinstalling and realizing I didn't backup my documents <insert smiley!...again...> I started reinstalling all of my applications. I'm still unable to use ssh and I've tried to ssh my own computer.

Is this possible?

# ssh 127.0.0.1
ssh: connect to host 127.0.0.1 port 22: Connection refused

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Connection To Windows XP?

Feb 2, 2010

I have a Windows XP Professional desktop that I would like to remote connect to from my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop. I would like to connect in such a way that the current user of the XP machine doesn't get logged off when I connect. I have googled this subject and have been unable to find this exact subject. I am fairly comfortable using the terminal although I am still learning it. I have heard FreeNX is a good program but from what I can tell it's only used to connect from Windows to Ubuntu. Is this correct? I would also like to remote connect from the above mentioned laptop to the XP machine while at work over the internet if that's possible.

Networking :: VPN Active But No Remote Desktop Connection?

Feb 27, 2010

I am trying to connect to my Company network through VPN. I use a Lynksys router which is most likely not the problem, as I can get the VPN and Remote Desktop to work from a WinXP Pro laptop connected to the same router. I have tried several RDC clients, none of them establish a connection. The VPN connection is active, I can ping and Traceroute to it , but I cannot get the RDC to work. The RDC should connect to 189.0.0.10 on the company network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Connection Closing After A While?

Jul 7, 2010

Does anyone know what could be causing a Remote Desktop connection to a 10.04 box to be closing after some period of time? I have three systems all running 10.04 with Remote Desktop enabled. I'm using UltraVNC on Windows 7 to connect to them. If I open a connection and leave it open for a long time (like overnight, for example), when I come back in the morning, I still see the VNC window but as soon as I click on it, it closes. I can immediately open a new connection to the box but it now shows two active connections. At first I was thinking maybe there's an idle timeout value but given that Ubuntu still seems to think that the original connection is active, maybe the problem isn't on the Ubuntu side but on the UltraVNC side?

Also, during install of the new ubuntu, it was unable to reach the repos for downloading. Odd thing is that I can go online, and that when I type 'ftp.microsoft.com' in my browser, it displays the file-hierarchy.

And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.

My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.

My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.

I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc

And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.

No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.

I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Access Work Remote Desktop Via The Terminal Server Client On Wired Box Running 10.10?

Dec 3, 2010

I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.

When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!

I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.

What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mobile Broadband - VPN - Remote Computer Losing It's Connection To The Server

I'm using a mobile broadband for internet connection, with DynDNS wich updates the host with public IP-address.

I've managed to set up the connections and installed the needed packages. The problem appears when I connect to the VPN server through another computer;

When I get connected to the VPN server the remote computer recieves an IP-address from the server (xUbuntu) wich is great! But the server changes prefered network, from the mobile broadband to the wired network wich results in the remote computer losing it's connection to the server.

Fedora :: Setup Graphical Remote Connection To Laptop Via VNC?

Jan 22, 2011

Fresh installation of Fedora 14 x86-64 on Lenovo T510. I'm trying to setup graphical remote connection to this laptop via VNC. I installed vnc-server package and altered /etc/sysconfig/vncservers accordingly:

Code:
VNCSERVERS="2:awajda"
VNCSERVERARGS[2]="-geometry 800x600 -nolisten tcp -localhost"

I found Remote Desktop which opens vino-preferences and ticked the check boxes there. I started vnc-server and then I tried to connect to it from the same local host using vncviewer. I got no errors and the window with correct resolution came up. The problem is - that window is black and empty. I tried looking into Fedora docs but I haven't found anything useful there. I tried google and I found about 487693746874363 solutions and different ways of installing and configuring VNC server. I tried a few - none helped.

I wonder if there is a decent and consistent documentation about how to make remote desktop working in Fedora without having a real pain in the ass trying out those gazillion tweaks and tricks from various forums and blogs? After all Fedora 14 comes with that Remove Desktop thing available out of the box. Is it a real working thing or just a marketing Should I uninstall all the preinstalled VNC stuff and follow one of those painful instructions found on the internet from A to Z praying for it to eventually start working after all the magic is done and hours or days are wasted?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Remote XDMCP Connection Ending Every Two Hours?

Jun 16, 2010

I am going through cygwin's XWin.exe (XWin - queary <hostname>) to start a remote session with a RHEL 5.5 workstation. I have run gdmsetup on the worksation to allow the remote connection. Starting the remote session goes off without a problem. After about two hours, it just exits and I have to start over. This is a problem since all my gui's are killed and I have some important processes running.

/var/log/syslog/messages shows:

Jun 15 16:49:53 <host> gconfd (root-12016): SIGHUP received, reloading all databases
Jun 15 16:49:53 <host> gconfd (root-12016): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only configuration source at position 0
Jun 15 16:49:53 <host> gconfd (root-12016): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/root/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 1

[code]....

There must be a 2 hour timeout set somewhere - maybe in a gconf xml file?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mac Terminal Server Client (VNC) - Cannot Delete Connection

Sep 9, 2010

So I setup VNC on my Mac (that runs Snow Leopard) and my PC (that runs Ubuntu) and I gave the IP address to Ubuntu, entered the password and it worked fine. The problem is that it still works fine... I only made this connection to test it because I thought it'd be cool, which it was (for a while). Now I cannot delete this connection whatsoever!

I have tried changing the password on the Mac, limiting the users, and even switching it off completely by unchecking its checkbox. I have also tried limiting the users... BUT UBUNTU STILL MANAGES TO GET INTO MY COMPUTER! This is really annoying because anyone using the PC downstairs can now go into my Mac and mess about with things - I hate this. Somehow, Ubuntu has locked in on my Mac and, despite the changes, can earn access no matter what!

Networking :: Cannot Establish A Wireless Network Connection From The Terminal In Ubuntu 10.10

Jan 27, 2011

I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network in ubuntu through the terminal but i am unable to do so.

I first tried using ifconfig,iwconfig and dhclient initially but i am only able to get an ip address without the default gateway and dns server addresses which i normally get through the network manager applet.

Then i tried using cnetworkmanager but failed miserably again i keep getting this error

Code:

Another applet is running: Bus name already exists: org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings (pid 1851)

Then i used nmcli available with the network manager package. i was able to establish a connection only with the connections showed in the list. i use a hidden wireless network. i am unable to connect to the hidden wireless network using nmcli without actually creating a connection from the network manager applet.
