Aug 16, 2009install fedora 11 on Vista I want to keep the windows boot loader and also install on a usb drive or a seperate partition that has 10GB free "install doesn't see partition's". Recently I installed ubuntu and had a major problem with booting, without having the usb drive connected I couldn't boot windows so uninstalled it. I'm trying to install now but install does'nt give me any option to select partitions from my drives one 320GB "portable, 3 partitions" and 80GB "main os 2 partitions one partition has 10GB free"

Jun 4, 2011Fedora is having trouble identifying a raid partition, it sees them as separate drives. I got drivers from dell, but during a Fedora dvd install, it mentions nothing about a place to install extra drivers.
When it says it must "initialize" the drives, Fedora then breaks the dell bios raid. How to either install the dell drivers or make Fedora see the raid partition as one?

Jul 29, 2009I was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.

Anyway, long story short, I have ubuntu on my laptop and I want to re install windows onto a separate partition, keeping my ubuntu instillation in tact and set as my deafault OS.
I'm very new to ubuntu and the only guides i've seen are fairly complex. I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction? p.s. Is there maybe a way to create an image of my current ubuntu nstillation/settings/apps etc. just in case I do something wrong and lose everything?

I attempted install of ubuntu over older version of xubunut without physically disconnecting the os x drive After install I could not boot into either system. THEN I remembered something about the install problem that 10.4 has and installed ubuntu again, this time following the instruction regarding booloader install. Now I can boot ubunut fine, but of course when I select drive holing os x it hangs on 'Verifying DMI pool data....' I've been looking at some thread on here about dual boot problems with Win7 and such, but are any of the recommended diagnostic and repair steps relevant to my case, specifically testdisk and bootinfo scripts?

Mar 20, 2011I've read several accounts of users who upgraded Ubuntu versions and ran into problems. I read that putting /home on a separate partition can make it easier to do upgrades. But it seems to me application versions and even the default applications themselves change so much between Ubuntu releases that I question whether it's a good idea to have all the "OLD" config files and settings that get stored in /home sitting around when running a new Ubuntu release.Does anyone think it's a better idea to just put the whole Ubuntu install (i.e., / and /home) on the same partition? And then when upgrading, backup, and then just fresh install everything (to get the cleanest possible installation)?

Currently I'm on attempt number 6 but my patience wore thin about 2 days ago - here's the current state of play: I have WinXP running fine (Was installed first) and I have Ubuntu running fine if I use a boot loader disc. (For those that don't want to read the link: It get's you to create 4 partitions on a drive - 1: ntfs for winxp (not touched) 2: Linux partition 3: linux-swap partition 4: fat32 osshare partition) then if you get no boot options, it creates an ubuntu.bin file which you move to the C: and edit the boot.ini to include it in the options). But all the difference it makes is I get boot options, I press Ubuntu and my computer sits with a blinking cursor for as long as you let it.

Aug 5, 2010I run several OSes (all Linux) on my computer. I set a separate partition for each one. I want to run Fedora 13 LXDE mainly for a game or two that are in the Fedora repos but not in any others, so I will not need a lot of space. But I want to make sure there is enough room for the OS.
I want to be able to play CloneKeen, so I will need enough space for that. I may find some other games, as well, so I will need some extra space. I have my other two OSes on six GB apiece, and Peppermint actaully uses barely half of that. Will 6GB be enough for a basic Fedora install with a few games installed? I will not really use Fedora for anything else, probably.

Apr 23, 2009Trying to dual-boot OpenSolaris and FC10 is difficult because Solaris grub doesn't know about ext3 and Fedora grub doesn't know about ZFS. I was able to rescue my FC10 installation by creating a new FAT16 partition and restoring /boot to it from a dump, and then doing a grub setup to it. A complication is that anaconda doesn't seem to be able to find /dev/md0 (both the Solaris and FC10 installs use mirrored disks).
This process moved the FC10 ext3 partition from /dev/sda3 to /dev/sda4, but the other half of the mirror is still /dev/sdb3.
When I boot FC10 I get a "can't load image" error from grub, but it still loads FC10 successfully. It makes no difference if menu.1st/grub.conf has "root (hd0,1)" (the FAT16 partition) or "root (hd0,3)" (the FC10 ext3 partition).
If a future yum update were to try to install a new kernel, my FAT16 partition would not be updated. It seems to me both these problems might be solved if I could move /boot from /dev/md0 to /dev/sda2 (/dev/sda2 is the FAT16 partition).
Rather than go through yet another install, would the following work?
from FC10, move /boot to (say) /boot.0
mkdir /boot
edit fstab to include "mount /dev/sda2 /boot"
If I try this and it doesn't work, I can't see any way to undo it since anaconda doesn't seem to be able to mount /dev/md0. If a grub guru sees this, perhaps they could suggest a better alternative, or if not, whether this will work or not.
Additionally, although there are two alternatives in menu.1st/grub.conf, grub doesn't display a menu - it goes directly to boot. Any idea why? I suppose this might be a Solaris stage1 grub problem...
Since FAT16 doesn't support links, it isn't possible to link grub.conf to menu.1st. Are they both required?

Everything works fine, the setup went very well. But I got to thinking (A dangerous thing for me). In Ubuntu I am using separate partitions for / (root) and /home. I was wondering, during install of Fedora, could I use the separate partition I am using now for both root and /home for just / (root) and use the Ubuntu /home partition for Fedora (set the mount point for /home to the same partition as I did for Ubuntu and not format the drive)? This would allow me to seamlessly use the /home partition and not require duplication of files. I can mount the Ubuntu /home dir while in Fedora.I can share the /home partition with two different installs of Ubuntu (been there).

Apr 2, 2009when I tried to download a installation DVD of F10 for my new thinkPad T500 laptop.The architecture of the processor should be i686 and I downloaded the DVD image Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso. I understand i686 has backward compatability with i386. But i have following questoins:
(1) why we don't have an installation for i686?
(2) If I install the i386 package, do I get performance downgrades?
(3) Also, why the live DVD has this file called F10-i686-Live.iso?
