Fedora Installation :: Chance Porting Ubuntu's 9.04 Xorg To F13?
Jul 27, 2010
I realize that I ask for a rather crazy thing . My problem is I own an HP2133 with via graphics. These drivers are very poorly supported, both open-source and proprietary drivers F13 runs quite nice on that machine, but playback of videos or flash lacks much perfomance. Proprietary drivers are only provided for Ubuntu and that only for 9.10 by VIA until know. With these drivers Ubuntu 9.10 is able to playback flash/videos quite good. But Ubuntu (9.10) brings a few annoying bugs, which do not seem to be fixed, that is the thing I do dislike with this ditstro. I pushed my luck and tried these drivers with F11/F12, but they did not work due to differences in xorg version. In F10 it was possible to use 8.04 VIA drivers, but F10 has EOL and is besides flash playback considerably slower than later Fedora releases.
So I thought using alien or similar tools to convert the xorg packages from Ubuntu 9.10 into rpms and install these to a F13 release.... (Like downgrading to an older xorg like it was necessary in F9 for ATI cards ...) As the VIA drivers did not work with earlier version of Fedora, I had the idea porting Ubuntu's xorg to Fedora that way.
Before I start spending a lot of time on this, I would like the freaks and neerds around here, if this to your opinion could have any chance of success.

Since I updated to Fedora 12, I've been using ibus-anthy to input Japanese.Unfortunately is lacking of handwriting input, something that scim was offering through scim-tomoe. Is there any chance to put Tomoe in use with ibus? Or any alternative solution that works on Fedora? I can't figure out how to use WriteRecogn btw.

System:
Fedora 12
Motherboard: ASUS A8V-XE (Socket 939)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Memory: DDR 400 184 pin (PSD1G400KM)--two sticks, 1 GB each
Much to my consternation, my video card blew a few capacitors. A local computer shop said that they tried a working PCI Express card, and the video was still not working, so they concluded the PCI Express slot was damaged as well. However, they also tried an older model video card that uses the PCI slots, and everything worked. So I ordered a new video PCI video card. It's on its way (Amazon). However, in the meantime I had a 1997-vintage video card sitting around, so when I got the computer back, I tried it. No signal to the monitor, not even motherboard booting beeps. Nothing. I called the shop back. He said even though my old card fit the PCI slot, new changes might have made it incompatible (16 vs. 32 bit, etc.). Anyway, even when I take the card out and boot, no beeps. That makes me wonder whether the old card did something, and now the motherboard is damaged beyond use. The man at the shop said the possible incompatibility of the old card should not have damaged the motherboard. Instead, he suggested that once a part of the motherboard is damaged (and we know the PCI Express slot is damaged), the motherboard as a whole can start acting erratically. However, it was beeping at the shop; now it is not.
I'm hoping those on this forum more knowledgeable about hardware than I am can give me some advice on the following questions.
(1) Does everything the shop did and said sound reasonable and likely?
(2) When my new PCI video card arrives from Amazon, if the computer still will not boot or even beep, does this prove I need a new motherboard?
(3) Is there any chance the motherboard could damage the new video card?
(4) Biggest issue: If I need a new motherboard, should I try to find one that accepts the same CPU and memory sticks? So far, I haven't been able to find one online. Or should I bite the bullet and get a new CPU and memory to match the new motherboard?
(5) If I get a new motherboard, new CPU, and new memory, can you suggest some possibilities of what I should look for? I don't want low-end, but for the work I do, I don't need really high-end, state-of-the-art either. I don't play computer games.

I am a software developer, presently porting a game engine from Visual Studio to GCC. I'm working on LTS 10.04. The project uses C++ lambdas, and I really would like to keep it this way. Therefore, I need GCC >= 4.5 to compile it.
I wouldn't like to reinstall entire OS, or to have to manually update this single program every time. Is there an option to update it from 10.10 repositories, pointing out, that I need only this package (and it's dependencies)? Or is there any PPA that does the trick for me?
Generally, the entire packaging system of Ubuntu rocks, as long as I can find up-to-date PPAs of all packages I need to have in recent versions (like mono).

First thing I do when I install fedora is to customise a few things: default font sizes, number of workspaces (an their names), icons on the gnome panels etc. I was wondering if there is a way that I could just copy some file from my old install to the new one that would save me doing this manully each time. I think the main things I need are customisations done in System->Preference->Appearnece and customisations to the GNOME Panels

From F12 to F13. Is there anything I should remove before updating? I have few programs isntalled from source/binary installers in /usr for example. Would it cause problems?
And is there any chance to be able to switch from a 32 bit kernel to 64 bit kernel during the update? The hardware is capable of this.

Is it possible to import an xorg.conf file from Debian to Fedora and have it work? The reason for this is that I have an older monitor that only offers 800x600 as the maximum resolution.

I have just installed Fedora 12 (64 bit), and I'm having troubles getting it working on my widescreen LCD TV. Before I installed the nvidia driver, it worked fine. After I installed the nvidia driver, it showed output on the screen until it gets to the logon screen (I never actually see the logon screen), where it goes black.
I'm assuming this is to do with my xorg.conf file, but I cant for the life of me work out what I need to change. I have been playing with all sorts of options, with no success.

I plan to do a minimal install and then install xorg and fluxbox. I'm not familiar with the way fedora names it's packages. what packages I need to install to get a working xorg. This is just a regular install on a home system with no special needs.

Just have F-13 32 bit installed. But can't find xorg.conf. The screen resolution is only 800x600. The LCD display and the video card can support 1640x1280. Please where can I find a standard xorg.conf. Or how to create it here?

After loading all the apps I use last night with a working FC14 x86_64, I powered up this morning and nothing happened after starting atd.1 try an alternat kernel same effectstart in init 1, OK go to init 3 OKran startx .. failedlook for xorg.conf.. no fileNow if Iwas still running mandriva , I would have typed mcc and bought up the control panel so I could have sorted out the Xorg problem, or tried. There really needs to be something like this.I found that gdm was not installed so installed it.It will now boot up to the login screnn, but wont accept my passwd.restart in init 3, login as root and add another user and set the password for that user.I also rest my passwd as welll.boot up again and get authentication failure on both users, and I cant login as root as someone removed that feature.
Also I can't use Ctrl-Alt -backspace to killl X so I have access to CLI so I can login there and run startx.I suspect several gnome packages have been removed/lost as I use lefthand mouse settings and the mostsetting are back to default. All I have is a live CD to gain access to the forum, and I only have one computer. There really needs to be a fallback to one of the smalll DMs on fedora so in situations like this you are nt forced to use CLI, thats if a new user would know how to access it. As there is no bootsplash, you have to already know to hit return and wait for the bootsplash.
IMO this a is a seriouss flaw, in what otherwise is a good OS.In the meantime I'll try and install XFCE to get X running, but I will need some help getting gnome back.I'll load gnome-panel and see if yum will pick up the rest as depemdencies.I hope this isn't a bug, as to lost the DM after the first machine power cycle is fairly drastic---------- Post added at 08:52 AM GMT ---------- Previous post was at 08:18 AM GMT ----------I resorted to yum install gnome-*which loaded 255 packages, including gnome-desktop, gnome-common, all the gnome applettsThis wasn't just one or two packages corupted, it was removal of the DM altogetherSimilar effect to running "rm -rf gnome-* "

I've got two laptops (a Dell and an Acer), one for work, the other for home. Both run openSUSE 11.1 64-bit and use KDE 4.4.
Is it possible to copy the settings on one machine to the other? The desktops are pretty similar, but not quite the same - and I can't remember what I did to the one I prefer to get it that way.
Obviously, the underlying hardware is different, but I am hoping that the OS takes care of that.

I bought a set of 3 laser sensors and it came with a software and its C++ source code for windows to receive the lasers info through the serial port. Since the entire project is running on Linux, I need to port the windows code to Linux. At the present moment, I already can receive the data from each of the 3 sensors, but the info is coming concatenated! Tracking down the original windows code, I found that it is probably happening cause I didn't ported these lines to my Linux version:
Code:
COMMTIMEOUTS CommTimeouts;
[...]
CommTimeouts.ReadIntervalTimeout = 2;
[code]....
I've searched already about how to specify the serial port timeouts on Linux, but didn't find a solution. how to port these lines to Linux or maybe where to find more info about how to set serial port timeouts on Linux?

I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:

- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". At this step, the installation procedure tell me an error. During this error, in the other console, I've this:

I am still new to porting wifi drivers. I am currently porting Ralink RT5370 driver, no problem with the compilation but when I execute insmod operation I got a lot of errors regarding RTMP. This is a part of the error I got:
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol rausb_buffer_free
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOsFreeSpinLock
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOsPktHeadBufExtend
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOSTaskNotifyToExit
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOsGetNetDevName
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOsHtonl
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOsAtomicInterlockedExchange
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpUtilInit
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOSTaskInit
rt5370sta: Unknown symbol RtmpOsAtomicInit
insmod: can't insert '/home/rt5370sta.ko': unknown symbol in module or invalid parameter
Based on the some forum that I've read, adding the MODULE_LICENSE("GPL") is one of the solution. I did add it inside usb_main_dev.c and recompile but I still get the same errors.
