I just installed Fedora Core 9 on a older PC (Compaq Presario that dual boots Windows xp). It had a much older Fedora on it and I overwrote it. I did a basic install using 3 of the 6 discs and watched it say it installed Gnome. I remember from a few years back that Fedora just boots to the prompt after installation unless you *tell* it to boot to a gui environment.
View 2 Repliesrecently built a F14 x64_86 system on a dual core X64 AMD based box. Later I installed the drive in a dual Xeon dual core box. I have the os set to boot to run level 3 then after I login I run telinit 5 to get to X11-Gnome desktop.However, when I boot the xeon machine I am able to login and run shell commands, such as yum update, fdisk -l etc. But when I try to telinit 5 the process hangs, hitting the power button, the machine goes through it's shutdown script.
I haven't tried transplanting the drive back into the original machine. just to test it's integrity, but I suspect it not corrupted. Not sure this matters, but running it's nvidia's driver for the video card. I think I can also boot to nouveau, but not 100 % sure with out having to deinstall the nvidia binary. both boxes uses the same video card a nvidia 8800 gtfwiw, I can boot my i386 f14 usb thumb drives that have the generic video driver installed.
I installed Debian 5.0.2 about a year ago, my first encounter with Debian and first serious look at Linux. I never got it right. Some software wouldn't work after installing. This week I decided to just start all over. I installed Debian 5.0.5 on a second disk. I seems to be better. Software that failed before works now!
Problem 1:
I ended up with two possible boot up choices in GRUB, but they both run 5.0.5 w/ Gnome. Why two? How do I know which to keep and how do I get rid of the other?
Problem 2:
Previously, I could boot into a command console by interrupting the normal boot. I don't get that chance now. It goes right to Gnome. I can't boot as root in Gnome. How do I get on as root?
I have Ubuntu 10.04. I installed the KDE libraries to use Okular. Then Ubuntu took almost 30s more to boot (20s black screen between login and desktop). I uninstalled KDE, booted on another kernel, rebooted and the boot time was OK again (25s).
I reinstalled KDE, 55s to boot again. Rebooted couples of times always the same. Rebooted on another kernel then again on mine (it seems to fix the slow boot times).
Boot time was 35s (I thought it was OK). After lauching Okular, the boot time was again 55s...
Removed KDE, Okular, and the boot time is normal again since 10 reboots..
After Gnome logon it may hangs in any moment (window scroll, app start, opening url)
If sound was playing in that moment it continuously repeats last sample (about 1 second length), but do not respond to mouse move/click or keyboard. If to let it stay in this state nothing change - sound sample still repeats and no response to input. I need to reboot it by reset button. Sometime when I press reset nothing happen then after couple of seconds computer turns off, after 1-2 sec on and then starts booting.
During first 15-20 minutes after booting it may hangs multiple times but after that it works without problems.
Tried do not logon 20 minutes after boot - do not help, it hangs anyway. Only helps logon and do nothing for awhile.
This behavior have started after F12 installation. F13 installation changed nothing, only F11 worked perfectly.
i've just upgraded from F12 to F14 and my gnome-panel crashes on startup every 2-3 boots. where to look for error messages and stuff so i can resolve the problem, becouse it's really annoying.

When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.

I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

I just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:
"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.
I have avant-window-navigator in my startup appplications. This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.

i am justin i'm 17 years old and new with linux, i use ubuntu and linux mint 7 and a friends of my has a dedicated fedora server. he asked me to intall a desktop manager ( or something that is the same, dont know how to call it ) so he could use remote desktop to acces his server
i have connected the server trought ssh and i am in the terminal. Now i want to install kde or gnome so i and my friend could use the server as a mail en WWW bla bla bla server. and my question is how i need to do that i tryd : yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)" and yum groupinstall "X Window System" but none works i have seen those commands on this forum so i tryd it.
Just installed FC13 to HD. After rebooting, install shows icons for home, computer, and trash. That's all, no gnome frame, so I have no access to the terminal or web. Even when I opened home and computer to see if there was a way to get anything from either of those, they were missing the (-,square box, x) to close them! I think one had a drop down menu that listed "close" as an option, but I had to kill the computer to close the other one. Gnome was there when I used the live cd to load to HD. I can go back in with the live cd to get to the terminal, but what do I do when I have it open? I tried to check the md5sum but didn't have any luck with following the instructions linked on the download page.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a problem when I power on my laptop (EliteBook 8530p) with fedora core 12 live cd in my optical drive. It simply will not start. The two numlock and capslock leds are flashing regularly and the screen is either blank, or it just freezes at the main menu (from which I can enter bios, etc). A HP assistant suggested that I should update my bios, but it's the same. I have also tried to install Mandriva 2010, which the laptop reads and boots up to a certain point when the screen goes blank, with the exception of a scroll flickering at the upper-left corner of the screen. Windows 7, FC 11, Ubuntu have been working till now, so I am inclined to believe that there's no problem with those particular cds (especially given the fact that I have written 3 or 4 with each linux image - fedora and mandriva).

The Gnome devs are taking things in a direction I don't like, giving us new ways to do things that don't interest me and making them mandatory. AFAICT, in the long run there's no real way to configure things to work the way I've been doing things for the last fifteen years. This is not a rant, not (mostly) a complaint, merely an observation. Clearly, I'm not part of their target demographic and I doubt that I'd want to be under the circumstances.
To me, that means it's time for me to move on and try something different. After some careful research, I've migrated my laptop to XFCE and am very happy with it. Now, I'm about to do the same to my desktop. This leaves me with an interesting question: what's the best way to remove Gnome from my two machines without removing any support needed for various programs that I'm accustomed to using and expect to continue using?

I currently have XP installed on a NetBook (Samsung NC10), and would like to run Fedora on it. I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?

I was able finish the install and boot to fedora first time. but after updating the software , i am unable to boot into fedora but am able to boot in to vista.
I am using a HP Pavilion HDX9000 notebook series. it has 2 100gb hdd. vista is on c and fedora is on d. boot info was written to MBR on C drive.
My most recent F11 -> F12 was a near-fiasco, because I had the bad luck of foolishly having two distinct physical drives in the same system, where the /(root) partition on each drive had exact same UUID (result of partition cloning and neglect to change the UUID on the copy)
BUT! the UUID redundancy was not the initial trigger of my problems (its near-disastrousness played itself out only while I was REMEDYING the initial problem). The initial trigger: insufficient space on my /boot partition. "preupgrade" neglected to properly assess the space and/or warn me about it before proceeding.
In addition, the automatic cycling out of grub kernel entries came to bite me (part of many factors of the near-fiasco) because after the unfinished upgrade i had only one working kernel left to boot into, until I messed up that remaining one (too long a story), and then grub-install messed up my booting because of duplicate UUID. At any rate, at the end of what looked like a good preupgrade-reboot-upgrade-package-install process the post-install phase lingered a looong time, then I found myself booted into the old Fedora 11 kernel with absolutely NO modules (corresponding /lib/modules had been erased by the upgrade!) Somehow the system ran, but no USB, no wifi, no ethernet, no way to easily place the right kernel rpm onto the hard drive (had to unscrew the drive,etc., to copy over the correct kernel rpm). (Plus, file /boot/preupgrade/vmlinuz, left over from the arrested upgrade, was NOT the right target upgrade kernel version (2.6.32.9-70.fc12), so it didn't help either because it didn't have its modules either. The target /lib/modules (version 2.6.32.9-70.fc12) WERE there, but the kernel itself was NOT, due to upgrade running out of space on the /boot partition).
(Oh, and the preupgrade/upgrade had deleted my /var/cache/yum/preupgrade/ packages; hence my inability to quickly (re)install the 2.6.32.9-70.fc12 kernel rpm -- why!? it hadn't successfully finished the process!)
(Also, FWIW, i ended up rescuing the system through "rpm -i --force <kernel>", many an F12 rescue boot, chrooting, /boot/grub/grub.conf & fstab edits, tune2fs/uuidgen, running grub on command-line ("setup (hd0)"), etc., etc.)
So, any tips out there on phasing out the old-school /boot partition scheme, the safest and easiest way (without destroying a working system, of course)?
Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. Now, however, I find the descriptions of what Gnome 3 and the Gnome Shell quite unsettling. That is, the Gnome devs have added a number of things I don't want, removed things I do want and made it impossible to configure Gnome 3 to work anywhere near what I want without adding unsupported third-party extensions. (Note: this is neither a complaint nor a flame; it's just a statement of my personal taste and any attempts to argue about it will be ignored.)
Currently, I have installed XFCE and am very happy with it on my two F14 boxes. I know that if and when I move to F15 (or F16 if 15 continues to be as problematic as it is so far) the upgrade will include Gnome 3, even though I don't use it. I'd like, therefore, to remove it but without removing any bits and pieces of it that are needed by whatever programs I'm using. What's the safest way to do this?
