Fedora Installation :: Fedora 13 Default Login Commandline Need GUI

May 19, 2011

I use a kickstart configuration file to load Fedora automatically, and for previous versions had no difficulty. With fedora 13 instead of getting the gnome gui at startup, I get an administrative tools window allowing me to adjust installation settings and after exiting I get a command line login, instead of the gnome gui. Is it possible to, through kickstart, change the environment from the command line back to the gnome gui

Fedora :: Customizing The Login Screen - Sound - Default Desktop Environment

Aug 27, 2010

I have just installed Fedora (13) for the first time. It's great ! So thanks to all its developers !

I managed to do many tweaks I wanted to, in no small part thanks to this forum, but here's one that eludes me and my google-fu.

I'd like to customize the login screen (if I grokked correctly, that's gdm). I already saw how to change the background or how to enable automatic login, but what I'd like to do is this :

1. Disable that rather annoying "pong" sound when I select a user,

2. Set a default desktop environment. Gnome seems to be the default environment selected in the drop-down menu, but me, I'd like for it to be XFCE.

General :: Commandline Chmod 770 - Cannot Login To Test Server Notebook

Nov 18, 2009

I did command:
sudo -s
chmod 770 .
chmod 770 ..
And now I cannot login on my test server notebook. Please do not ask why I use server software on my notebook. Cause I like it and I use it only for typing text en learning linux commands. So I have a notebook with ubuntu server 8.04.2.

First question is:
Why have linux after command ls -l -a this output?
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 2009-11-04 20:45 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 4096 2009-11-04 20:45 ..
And how must it to set and use? What is it's function? How can I repair my server notebook? Must I unmount my harddisk with a sqrewdriver and connect it to/on an other linux machine? If its needed, I can do that.

At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

Fedora Installation :: F11: Comes Back To The Same Login Screen After Login As Didn't Do Anything And Configuring The RPM Fusion "Repo"

Sep 18, 2009

I would like to post my problems here with Fedora 11 regarding that I am using Dell inspiron 1525, Dual core-N series. I have got two problems:

First;- After I updated my system, I have experienced a a login problem , which is each time I try to login and insert my password correctly it seems that it will login but it comes back to the same login screen as if I did not do anything, but after too many times it works.

Second: I read some posts in a website that talks about configuring the RPM fusion "Repo" and I did all the steps posted there , but after that whenever I try to update or download anything through terminal.... it appears the following:

Fedora Installation :: PAE Kernel Installed By Default Now?

Jun 10, 2009

I've just downloaded F11 i386 installation DVD. I installed it on my laptop and just now noticed that PAE kernel got installed. Isn't PAE for systems with RAM >3.2 GB? It's a pretty old laptop (P3, 256MB ram). So, is PAE kernel ok for me or should I reinstall from scratch and use some specific switches in the installer to get non-PAE kernel? I've also read that Yum doesn't recognize PAE packages dependencies and will install non-PAE kernel modules if I try to install let's say Nvidia driver or so.

Fedora Installation :: Default Boot Loader On F14?

Brand new to Fedora. I installed F14, the 64 bit version today. Just wondering, during the install, there really wasn't a lot of options regarding which bootloader to use nor options (use a graphical or text mode).So... what bootloader did Fedora install on my system? Can I modify it? I'd like to get rid of that ugly blue-ish back ground among other things.

I'm trying to set up ftp server in the most simple way possible - login to home directories for existing linux users (except root). I get "Login incorrect" when I try to authenticate, although I am sure it is the right user-password (I even changed it using passwd on server's shell and tried again with the new one). The funny thing is even if I purge the proftpd package and install vsftpd instead - it doesn't help - I can't log in. But I can log in with ssh.

Fedora Installation :: Korean Not Working As System Default

Jul 7, 2011

Have 2 FC 14 servers. On both of them set system default language to German (de_DE), reboot, and all is as expected -- all menus and messages in German. Then changed system default back to English, reboot, both are back in English. Then changed system default to Korean (ko_KR), reboot. One server comes up in Korean as expected, but the other comes up in English.

/etc/sysconfig/i18n is ko_KR.utf8 as expected. SSH terminal and execute 'locale' and all variables set to 'ko_KR.UTF8' as expected. Start a GNOME session (thru VNC), open a terminal and 'locale' shows 'ko_KO.UTF8'. Changed default language back to German, reboot, everything comes up in German. Change it to Korean, reboot, and we're back to English (not even German). (Note: LANG=en_US is set as kernel boot option, do that's probably why not German here.) Have trolled through DMESG and /var/log/messages but do not see any error message.Tried 'yum groupremove "Korean Support"' to clear everything out, then re-installed it. Still the same result.

Fedora :: Installation Script - Default Configuration Or Customize Settings?

Feb 17, 2011

I was fed up installing Fedora on many of my friend's laptop and doing the same and same thing again. So I've made a Fedora post installation script which does all I want to. Currently the script can:

Add user to sudoers
Configure yum to keep package cache
Fix a problem with Revisor
Add additional repos
Install multimedia codecs
Install flash(32-bit only)
Install wine with gecko,
Install GTalk plugin
Add colors to bash prompt
Add fortune messages to bash prompt
Set SELinux in permissive mode
Install additional softwares

By default, when you run the script, it will ask if you want to accept default configuration or use customize the changes. You can also run ./fedora-firstrun.sh -y to run the script with default configuration. To add yourself to sudoers, run the script as normal user. If you are not in sudoers list, the script will ask you to add to sudoers.

Fedora Installation :: Live Installation Hangs Up At Initial Login?

Dec 2, 2010

I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.

I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.

I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).

Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.

I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.

I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.

Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:51 PM ----------

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?

I did have the nvidia proprietary graphics drivers installed... how to track down an X issue like this relating to logging in to a system via the GUI?

Fedora Installation :: F11 Installed But Boot Won't Get To Login / What To Do?

No problems during installation (except DVD didn't automatically eject at end).

On booting, I got a bar across the foot of the screen (shades of blue, which then changed to white with Fedora 11 on RHS); then waited ... no change, no keyboard or mouse response.
Repeated the whole installation again - same result.

Then installed Fedora 9 and it booted OK; using Admin/Display showed a default CRT and XGI Volari Z7 video card.

Then I go to crt-alt-F2, and try to "yum install gnome-panel". Then it shows that I don't have any network connection at all, even though I did install my network. I'm thinking of installing F14 now.

Fedora Installation :: KDE & Gnome Login After Upgrade To F15?

Jun 24, 2011

About a week ago I used preupgrade to make the transition F14 -> F15 on a x86_64 workstation.

The system has been fully updated ever since, but I'm still not able to login either with KDE or Gnome. With KDE, the login process freezes before completion, whereas with Gnome I get the "wallpaper" behaviour reported here: [URL]

Funny though, I can login in the KDE failsafe session.

I could find no other thread reporting this problem and am at a loss on how to start diagnosing the problem. If anyone out there has any suggestion, I'd welcome it...

what's the difference between a "regular" KDE session and the failsafe one? They both look & feel the same to me...

Fedora Installation :: GDM Login Screen - Cannot Authenticate User

Mar 23, 2009

Previously I have a hard disk running OpenSUSE partitioned as follows:
Code:
/dev/sda1 = swap
/dev/sda2 = /
/dev/sda3 = /home

I redid the default partitioning scheme that Fedora tries to use (no LVM crap). Basically told it to make the above layout and to format swap and slash, but NOT to format /home because I want that data. I had it go ahead and install grub on the MBR of this HD as well. The install seems to have went ok and it rebooted. That is when the first problem comes up. I never see grub. I just get a black screen then a bar at the bottom that progressively turns blue, which I assume is Fedora loading.

This is all well and good, then it gets to the login screen (GDM) and I try to log in as root and it tells me "can't authenticate user" hangs for a bit, then goes back to the log in box. I try to get a virtual console (Ctrl+Alt+F#) and nothing. So I guess I have 3 problems in order of significance:
- Why no grub?
- Why no virtual console?
- Why root can't log in?

Normally I would edit kernel option line at the grub prompt to boot into single user mode and fix the problem, but can't. I was able to use the "rescue mode" on the Fedora DVD to accomplish this, but have not had a chance to figure things out any further. I don't think having a /home created by another OS would prevent root from logging in since root "home dir" is /root.
