Mar 19, 2011I have just installed Fedora 14. x86-64 edition. It is my first experience of using Fedora.
Alas, I am having problems getting sound working for the normal user. I enabled root access to see if it was a permissions thing. Clearly it is. Sounds work for the root account. I have been reading a lot of posts to see what I can change. Nothing has worked yet. I have put myself in the audio group in /etc/group, but it does not help. For some reason pulseaudio will only work for root. I am being denied access to /dev/snd/* even though I am in the audio group and the permissions of the files in /dev/snd allow read/write access to the audiio group. lspci -v | grep audio 00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)
Fedora Installation :: F11 Install After Root Password?
Jun 12, 2009I'm trying to do a fresh F11 install on a Athlon 64 dual core 4 gigs ram, nvidia gforce 9400.I set the root password, when press next nothing happens. I press Ctrl+alt+ backspace and i see:Code:Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server: 1.0Then system halts and says its safe to reboot.

Nov 26, 2009I just upgraded to Fedora 12 on my computer. Now I can't connect to the net. Under network I show the two connections (neither working). The "connect" and "disconnect" AND the "delete" buttons are all grayed out (?). I also can't log in as root to try to gain more access. Probably just a new way of doing things. I was upgrading from F7 so it was a bit of a jump.
Does the network utility work differently from 7? Am I now rootless? It would seem that my wifi card sees the net as I can see the routers out there, but can't connect. I'm sure I'm using the correct WEP.

"Can't mount Root SystemFile. Squash/liveOS/ext3fs.img No such directory or file exists"
I downloaded straight from website to CD.
My HDD is already partitioned with an empty spot for installation. I'm installing F12 alongside Vista SP2.

Feb 3, 2010I've installed F12 twice now. After completing the installation and getting all the updates via YumEx, my network trouble begin after a reboot. I am not able to login as root under gnome so I can't see the services panel.
Tried to reinstall 'NetworkManager' after the fact but of course I have no network connections so I may have made the problem worse. I hate to reinstall and repeat the same troubles over again as it consumes a lot of time. I don't know where to begin.

May 14, 2010Recently I tried to install Fedora 12 x86_64 to my laptop. I ran the live fedora image from my cooldisk and then pressed "Install to Hard Drive" from live desktop. Then I went forward until I reached the partitioning section. Though I had ~28GB free space in my Harddrive, but it says: "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks." I captured these steps by using Fedora 12 Live printscreen tool. I tried to install Fedora12 from its non-bootable DVD too, but no difference! So there's only 2 situations:
1. I did something wrong -> install Fedora and use its partitioning tool.
2. There's a bug in Fedora -> confirm that this is a bug and say me an alternative way to install fedora.

The upgrade crashes with the "the root for the previously installed system was not found". I've also tried upgrading using YUM and was also unsuccessful. May 26, 2010I am attempting to upgrade Fedora 12 to 13. I get an error screen that said root could not be found. Four options are given. Not sure exactly their wording, but two appear to allow you to cancel the other two warn that if you reinitialize you will wipe out all data.
I have a Vista partition and a Fedora partition. I've added the vista ntfs partition to fstab with no help. All of the partition use the long UUID form. I added the root location (root (hd0,5) to the upgrade menu item in grub.conf and that didn't work either.
I'm reluctant to proceed for fear of initializing the entire drive. I could live with installing Fedora 13 over the existing partitions.
Fedora Installation :: F12 Upgrade - Boot Failure / No Root Device Found
Jun 1, 2010I'm a long time Linux user. Finally got around to upgrading my Fedora 11 system to Fedora 12 by using the 'preupgrade' tool. The upgrade appeared to go well (downloaded packages, rebooted into installer, etc). However, now that the upgrade is complete, I'm unable to boot my system.
Here's my configuration:
/dev/sda (80Gb)
200Mb /boot partition (ext3)
52Gb / partition (ext4 - managed as logical volume)
2Gb swap partition (managed as logical volume)
20Gb /spare partition (ext3 - managed as logical volume) .....
All worked fine under Fedora 11 for the last few months. Grub now presents me with 'Fedora' and 'Windows XP' boot options. The /boot/grub/menu.lst file is essentially the same as it was for Fedora 11, except for the different kernel versions, etc. The boot sequence shows the Fedora bubble (??) and gets about 80% full when the screen goes black and the message displayed is:
No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever
If I boot Windows, all works fine.
Am able to boot using a SystemRescueCD disk. The disks all look okay and I can mount/modify all partitions, etc. The grub menu.lst file read as follows (sorry, typed in, not copied):

timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE)

Aug 18, 2010Having just installed fc13 and downloaded the KDE package I attempted to log out as user and back in as root, but I keep getting a message about the wrong password. This is odd as the same password works in terminal if I try to become a SuperUser. I have tried turning off SELinux to no avail. I cannot log in from cold as root,only as user.

Install went ok, but after rebooting it says: "No root device found. Boot has failed, sleeping forever."
During install from the live CD I didn't "v" the boot (efi or something?) because I thought Grub would take care of everything.
Should I just reinstall again and choose the Fedora bootloader? Won't it mess up Grub?
