View 4 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE Install :: Moving A Moderately Complex System From An Old System To A New System
Sep 25, 2010My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

I had tried to use mkinitrd to build one, but that one couldn't boot. My system is fedora12,as well as my usb hard disk.

I've researched some and found that kickstarts and vnc may be the way to go. Since I've never done this before, and never used either kickstarts or vnc before, can someone please provide a detailed guide? Jun 3, 2011As most of us know when you start the machine with the Install Disc in the drive you get a menu that reads:
Welcome To Fedora 15!
Install a new system or upgrade an existing system
Install system with basic video driver
Rescue installed system
Boot from local drive
Memory test
But when you try to boot the install DVD on and EFI based Mac...you only get
Booting Fedora 15 in 3...2...1 ...and then the system hangs.
If any users are having trouble with Fedora Install Media...you can usually use the Install Media from a previous release! In this case, I used the Fedora 14 (64-Bit) disc to install Fedora 15 by simply replacing the 'F14' with a 'F15' in the URLs of the Install and Update repository dialog boxes.
OpenSUSE Install :: Boot 11.4 On Dualboot Nvdia G7600 Based System - Fresh Install "system Console Stolen At Line"
Apr 22, 2011I tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

Fedora Installation :: Get System Restore Option For XP After Install
Jan 31, 2009probably did something stupid.. just haven't figured out what yet.. hope someone can point me in the right direction. daughters computer broke, maybe virus, so i did clean reinstall of xp. decided to give her a couple of linux distros, thinking maybe they are safer for when she is surfing..
Used gparted to repartition hd:
Partition table entries are not in disk order
Installed Ubuntu 8.04. was then able to boot into either ubuntu or xp. next installed fedora 10. new menu.lst did not show ubuntu, only fedora and xp. had some lockups in fedora, and had to pull plug to reboot 2 or 3 times. replaced power supply. added ubuntu into menu.lst. boots into fedora and ubuntu fine. tried to boot xp, and get "Preparing System Recovery Option", then PC Angel appears, and it wants me to use the system restore option for xp.
Is there something i can do to recover xp without having to wipe the hd and reinstall xp, then reinstall ubuntu and fedora (and if i do all that, how can i be sure i don't end up with the same problem?

I took the hard drive with Ubuntu install and made it the second SATA drive, and then put a new SATA drive in as the first and installed Fedora on it.Now I want to access my files from the Ubuntu drive and put them on the new drive but when I try to access it, I can look at some files but the majority of them (like my music and a lot of my documents) it says that I don't have permission.Is there some way I can get to these files? I tried searching but I couldn't find anything relevant

Apr 15, 2010I was using Fedora 9 until about 1 month ago when my hard drive crashed. I installed F12 on a new hard drive last week. Due to some other software issues (empathy), I decided I should try to get the latest updates. PackageKit kept giving errors and would not update. So, I researched and found that I needed to run " su -c 'yum update' " for the first update then PackageKit would work. I did this and after about an hour of updating, the screen went black. Nothing you can do at that point but hard reboot.
When I did that, I could only get a "GRUB" command line. I played with it for a minute but really I have no idea what to do with GRUB cmd (beyond my experience level). So I decided to wipe it out and reinstall F12. I did that, and was just working thru the updates again. Same thing happened, went to black screen. I have not rebooted it yet, but Im sure when I do, it will be GRUB again. What in the world am I supposed to do with this? I am not a Linux star, but I have been using it for around 8 years now with various distros, so I would say I have at least moderate experience.
Fedora Installation :: Can't Install F14 | System-config-lvm Failure?
Jan 5, 2011Been running Fedora for a while now, iterating up through versions to 12. Decided to to a clean install upgrade to 14. Apparently, bug mistake. Everything seems to be progressing fine, but after 'transferring install image to harddrive', the 'Starting Install Process' fails withsystem-config-lvm-1.1.15-1.fc14.narach.rpm cannot be opened.I have no idea what to do with this. I've reburned the install disk a couple of times (and checked the HASH) -- no apparent problems with the install media.Tech details: x86_64 install on a multi-pro box with a 3ware raid 5 controller (5 disk). I've never run LVMs. Two simple hard partitions (/ and /home). Fedora 12 installed with no problems (as did every other version of Fedora <=12).---------- Post added at 12:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 AM ----------Some additional information:1 tried Fedora 13 -- wouldn't even recognize my disks. Installer hung at trying to find basic storage. Not a good sign2 tried my old Fedora 12 install DVD -- again, worked like a charm. Expect that F12 repos are now closed.
So, it seems as if some 'change' between F12 and F13/14 has made some part of the install process choke on my 'hardware' (I'm guessing something related to 3ware RAID card). ---------- Post added at 01:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------I just tried CentOS 5.5 (x86_64). Also installed fine. For some reason, Fedora >= 13 absolutely won't let me get past the problem noted in the OP. I suppose I could go with CentOS (for long EOL support), but I need some of the newer compiler/dev libs in Fedora 14 for some projects I'm working on.
Installation :: D820 Refuses To Install System / Fedora - Fix This?
Jun 3, 2011I am a new to linux. I recently purchased a used dell d820. It has 2 gigabites of ram, and has centrino duo. The hard drive is 80 gigabites. I used boot and nuke to erase windows xp, in order to install linux. (I was quite unhappy with the screen, codec, and other problems I was having with windows.)
However, each time I try to install Fedora, or any other version of linux to the hard drive, the computer shuts down ENTIRELY.
Is there a way to fix this? I seems like my machine just doesn't like linux?

If I try to remove it the system reports that gnome-schedule is available but not installed. Anyone know how to approach this?

Fedora Installation :: 'Missing Operating System' After 10 Install On Dell M6400?
Jan 31, 2009I have installed Fedora 10 on a Dell M6400. It has 2 disks in a mirror raid. It came with Windows Vista, but I am not doing a dual boot setup. I have formattet the disk with this installation.I downloaded http://ftp.crc.dk/fedora/linux/relea...0-i386-DVD.iso, burned the DVD and did the install check. It passed the check.The installation went fine, but after the first reboot I am getting "Missing operating system".
I have no idea where to begin... Could the installation media be faulty after all? I there anyway to get passed this, without reinstalling? I know this may have something to do with the boot loader, but I don't know anything about it.I have installed Fedora 4,5,6,8,9 and this never happened to me before, but then again, I did all these installations on my old Dell Latitude.... Could this have something to do with the new hardware?

Mar 13, 2009I am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... I am stuck at this screen shown in the installation screenshot...I get this screen however I dont get the options back or next or its that I am unable to see this options on the screen at all and mouse gets hanged and even keyboard doesnt work...

Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...
It takes me to the screen
1) Install or upgrade fedora
2) rescue existing installation...
3)
4) Memory test
when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...

Whenever I try to install a software or try to open the 'add/remove software' or, 'Software Updates' I get the message

Dec 20, 2009I installed FC11 from installation cds twice and I'm having a problem with Firefox freezing the system. The mouse cursor will move but nothing else is responsive, including mouse buttons and keyboard.I checked the media on every disc and they all check fine.I never had this problem with FC10. I tried upgrading Firefox -- with the necessary dependency upgrades too but without success.I tried to downgrade to FC10 Firefox and ran into a great big hassle with that.
