Server :: Secure - Filesystem And Partitions To Be Encrypted But Without The Need To Insert Some Code When Rebooting

Apr 26, 2011

I have implemented a web application on Linux that I want to deploy and sell to customers. I want to sell ready systems including the hardware. The application is written in PHP/MySQL. What I am searching to achieve is :

1) Find a way so that filesystem and partitions to be encrypted but without the need to insert some code when rebooting. So that if someone gets out the hard disks and attach to another system, cannot have any access to my files or settings. And of course when rebooting (e.g. after a power failure) encryption to be applied automatically.

2) I know that there are ways to bypass root password on a Linux system. Can all these ways be unassigned ? I want the only way to have access to system, to be by using the root password and nothing else.

I have thought of using a virtual server instead of a physical one (like deploying a virtualbox server) but still would like this to be the most secure possible including not only remote but also local access to system.

Security :: Ways To Secure Sendmail Or Secure Alternatives To Send Mail

Dec 1, 2010

I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.

Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.

Fedora :: Switching To F15 Secure Accounts

Jun 30, 2011

In the upcoming days I will be formatting my F14 box and switching to F15. Now I have offered a friend to use some of my storage (8TB) as a ackup for her personal files/photos. I want to set it up so that she can be sure she is the only one having acces to it (so not even I can read them as root). How can I set this up. encryption? account configuration?

Most likely she will upload via secure FTP.She trusts me, but I want to provide her with the piece of mind that it is not accessible by anyone but her.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Capture Blank Field In /var/log/secure

Jan 7, 2011

An unsuccessful login via a tty by a known user and an unknown user will generate an almost exact line in /var/log/secure with the exception of the last field. To see this specifically do Ctrl-Alt-F2, for example. Now login with a known user and log out. Next attempt a login with a bogus user name which fails. Go back to your GUI enviroment (Ctrl-Alt-F7) and then tail /var/log/secure. For the known user the last field will be "user=some_name_here. The unknown user will not have a "user=" field.

How do I capture the two via different variables in bash?

For example: KNOWN_USER=`syntax that finds the user= field.` echo There is a user= field and the user is mmouse.

UNKNOWN_USER=`syntax that does NOT find the user= field` echo There is NO user= field and an unknown user tried to login.

If been exploring using sed to grab (or not grab) that last field, but haven't hit upon the right syntax yet.

Fedora Servers :: Making MySQL As Secure As Humanly Possible

Sep 3, 2009

After securing webmin on my web server, with a custom SSL connection.I wanted to do the same with phpMyAdmin. But I am unsure of where to look for the best tutorial(s) to do this, can anyone help?Plus I saw once at work our network tech adding in accounts but then allocating that to the login itself. For example, when your brought up with a .htaccess prompt in the browser, thats assigned to you login within phpMyAdmin, taken from the db server no doubt, is it possible to do this?Should there be anything else I need to know in securing mysql?I have limited all services to a set number of IPs so non of its publically functional at the moment so I can take as long as possible, but naturally I'd like to be able to be as speedy as possible about getting this sorted.

Fedora Servers :: Secure - Httpd Tomcat Mysql

Dec 19, 2009

I just installed FC12 x86_64. After a clean install I found that httpd, mysql, svn, svnadmin, etc are already installed. I still need to install and configure tomcat running as a worker behind httpd and configure everything. But my question is about security. What do I need to do to ensure that when I start httpd and mysql that they are secure? Are there default settings that I need to change? Are there security patches I need to apply?

Dec 21, 2010

I'm running a server using CentOS 5 x64 I want to disable access of groups to "bin" folder so they cannot execute commands. [info: actually because of a bug in cPanel (the control panel I installed) Perl will give access to all hosting users to execute commands.] so what i wanna do is to ban some groups on 'bin' folder, for example 'my_group1' and 'my_group2" cannot access bin but 'my_trusted_group' can access it.

OS: Fedora 14 ( I faced same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 )Browsers: Chrome and Firefox

The issue is not there on Windows using Chrome and Firefox so I believe this is a problem with how linux manages secure connections. I can access all the google secure websites too. There a few other websites apart from facebook.com that I know which I am unable to access.

Fedora Networking :: Route Table Change Disconnects From Secure Connection

Oct 21, 2010

I use a secure connection to reach company network from outside. There's a client application "Juniper network", which creates the secured tunnel to a company network. However, the connection never survives more than 8 seconds, when it goes disconnected with the message "Route monitor alarm". From my recent search for a solution I've found that this error is caused by a change in a route table, which violates a connection policy.

"This disconnect is typically triggered by a change in the routing table of the client machine, the change is such that the split tunnel policies defined by the administrator will be violated" - from [URL]

This is how a routing table looks before, during and after the connection attempt:

Code:
[vs@dilbert network-scripts]$ route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
10.64.64.64 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp0
xxx.xxx.xxx.0 10.64.64.64 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 0 0 ppp0

This only happens when I run code associated with acid the IDS Console I am trying to setup. The apache test page is okay and so is the php test page.
