Fedora Security :: Minimal Install - Encrypted Root Fs?

Dec 2, 2010

I like to do a minimal install, and then run some of my own scripts to install the rest of the packages I need, so to keep a lean system. When installing F14 with a partitioning scheme as follows:

Code:
/boot - 500MB
LVM
- swap - 2048 MB
- / - 15GB
- /home - Rest of file system - Encrypted

Everything works fine and the encryption works with no problem. However, as a friend pointed out to me, if you partition as follows:

Code:
/boot - 100MB/ - Rest of filesystem - Encrypted You are not able to boot the system when doing a minimal install. Meaning: you get up to the point to where you need to enter your password to decrypt the filesystem, and then nothing but..., well, nothing. However, and here it gets interesting, if you use the same partition layout, and you install the "Graphical Desktop", everything works fine. As I can not understand why this happens, I am currently testing a partition setup like so:

Code:
/boot - 100MB
LVM - Encrypted
- / - Rest of filesystem
Just to see if that works.

Anyhow: to make a long story short: It seems that the minimal install "forgets" to add some packages which are needed to decrypt the filesystem. Does anyone know which package this could be or why this occurs, so it can be added as part of the minimal install?

Red Hat / Fedora :: RPM Install Script Fails On Root Change / What To Solve It?

Mar 4, 2011

I am working with Rhel 5.5. I am creating rpms and I have an issue. I want to bzip up the file before I make the rpm. Then I want to unzip it at install time. I add the zip up work to the %prep tag and added the unzip to the %prerun tag of the SPEC file. Everything works fine.

Then I install the rpm to a different folder with rpm -i --root /tmp for example and the scripts fail to run because the script can't find /bin/sh.

It makes sense because rpms are dependent on the absolute paths to the file, but I want to know how to still have the scripts run. I tried to put the /bin/sh in the /tmp folder (in the example above) but it still can't find it. And yes i do have /bin/sh on the system.

Fedora Installation :: Install Ok - But Boot Failed - No Root Device Found

Nov 21, 2010

I have 2 Debian OS's and wanted to put Fedora next to it.

Install went ok, but after rebooting it says: "No root device found. Boot has failed, sleeping forever."

During install from the live CD I didn't "v" the boot (efi or something?) because I thought Grub would take care of everything.

Should I just reinstall again and choose the Fedora bootloader? Won't it mess up Grub?

Fedora :: 10 Logged In As Root, Cannot Install Package Updates In Graphical Environment?

I have updated the gdm file to be able to log in as root in Fedora 10.Nevertheless after I had selected package updates to be installed logged in as root I still get an error message that I do not have enough privileges. The terminal installation method is a bit of a problem since I do not think it will search for dependencies and therefore it can be excessively long to figure out what is missing for a package installation. In simple cases it works OK, but in more difficult cases it is a bear.

Server :: Fedora Sending Mails From Root With Non-root Account?

Jul 14, 2011

I've started to get emails that would typically come from [URL] as [URL]. These emails come from services that send out emails (backup programs) directly, or from cronjobs. I've logged in as the non-root account and either sudo su - or su - to root and the restart the service at one point or another. If I login directly as root and bounce the service or cron the emails come across as from root. I don't see anything in my environment variables after I su to indicate what would cause this. I'm not sure where else to look? A pam setting? This seems to have happened between Fedora 10 and 14 (did a bunch of overdue upgrades recently) I've only got Fedora so I don't have anything to compare to. In Fedora 10 I did not have this problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Root Password During After Install?

Apr 5, 2011

have managed to lock myself out of my root account...I just installed openSUSE 11.4, and during the install, I set the root password to be different then my regular user password. Both passwords I've used for a while and know backwards and forwards so it's not a case of simply forgetting a new password. The thing is, I managed to mis-type the root password wrong 2x in a row. I have tried all my passwords numerous times, with and without caps lock, I've tried su -, sudo and logging in directly as root. All to no avail. It always returns authentication failure.I know this is a worst case senario and am expecting that the easiest way to fix is just to reinstall (Not a big issue since I just installed) but I figured I would ask if anyone had a good way to fix this
