When I installed Fedora 12, Autoten gave me the option to automatically log me in. Well now, I want to go back to using a password to activate my desktop. I've searched but I haven't found any information on how to do this.

Now I plugged the usb into a windows computer but the driver installation routine doesn't start. It's obvious that's because I deactivated the cd mode. How do I bring it back?
I have (had) a dual boot system of Ubuntu (11.04) and Windows 7. I was forced to reinstall Windows over itself and it installed its boot loader. How do I get my Grub boot loader back? I googled it and found instructions, but they were from 2007 so I thought it might only be for Grub Legacy. The instructions were as follows:
Boot from a live cd
run "sudo grub" in a terminal
then, "root (hd0,0)", "setup (hd0)", and "exit"
reboot and grub should be present
While I wait for ubuntu to download so I can create a live cd, can someone confirm if this is correct for Grub 2? Also, what commands will tell me which hard drive and partition I need to put in the above commands (hd0,0)? I have (4) internal hard drives and boot drive has a few partitions on it.
I need to manager printers from shell. The version is Centos 5.4. At this moment i cannot manager printers, and somebody told me that i need to reinstall centos. Is it possible to do anything to reactivate that property, without reinstalation?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have winbind Active Directory authentication set up on my laptop. AD authentication works like a charm, passwords cache, etc. I can use sudo with no problem. However, I cannot use the root account -no matter what I set the root password to, the system will not take it. I also have a couple of normal system users (not winbind), and no matter what I set their passwords to, I cannot login.

In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password
I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password?To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal,which then asks for the password.What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. I am new to using Ubuntu 10.10 that was installed by a friend of mine, but he didn't give me a password for administrator and now when I try to install VLC I am blocked by a password prompt. View 1 Replies View RelatedI migrated an old SuseLinux 10 box to Debian (Lenny) a couple months ago, and apparently no one noticed you can't change your password. Root can do it because passwd doesn't ask root for a password, but no one else can (although they can log in, passwd doesn't recognize their login password when they attempt to set a new password and it asks).I changed authentication to use blowfish when I setup the server (because the SuseLinux 10 system used it) and apparently the passwd command doesn't work with that. Apparently I need to update another configuration file or possibly get a different program to update the passwd file if I use blowfish. Any ideas?
The weird thing is that it can generate a blowfish hash to set a new password, but apparently can't generate one to authenticate the user.something changed recently and it is no longer generating a blowfish hash when setting a new password. It is generating a hash with only 13 characters. And I can clearly see that many users have changed their passwords.
I have a requirement to set up linux system administrator password with respect to below guidelines... I was lookin at pam_passwdqc but not sure that it all the below mentioned criterias to be acheieved.. Please go thru the below criteria and let me know which utility should i use for it.
1 The password length must be at least 16 characters long.
2 The password must be different from the previous 20 passwords.# Not sure how to acheieve this
3 The password must be changed every 60 days.
4 The password must be different from the user ID. It must not contain any derivatives of the User ID. ]# Not sure how to acheieve this
5 The password must contain characters from 3 of the following 4 classes:
5.1 Upper Case
5.2 Lower Case

I want to create a script in bash to allow me to retrieve some files I have in a cluster. Access is through ssh, and the command I use to copy files is scp. The problem here is that when the script is run it asks for the password three times (it is instructed to copy from three different folders).
It doesn't matter if I use
