The system's volume is way too low compared to windows vista set up on the same computer. The master volume (at the top right corner) and the player's volume is set to full and the speaker's volume is almost full. even the sound is just ok, not loud. Why can such a thing happen on fedora 10?

View 9 Replies View Relatedfirst of all im new to OpenSuse i have been using different distros since early 90's if theres one i havent tried i would be very surprised anyway im very picky when it comes to sound and picture maybe its the fact that im a developer and also art director anyhoo i got tired of my HTPC ( windows ) i thought linux has to be able to do it just as well i mean i only use it for movies and music but was surprised to see how video works in linux picture is somewhat ok compared to Windows but movement is another story even vsync off it looks like a old VHS tape when it should be DVD. Cam-panning is even worse. How is this and can it be fixed?

Absolutely nothing would start. I tried different configurations, settings, but nothing. I left it alone and rebooted and started up XP. I have not other browsers on windows; on linux there is aroraonqueror (KDE3), kazehakase, chrome, and dillo, besides text browsers. I've researched a little bit about, but not enough to make a list of possible things to change in order to improve the speed on linux. Most of the time there are people just agreeing that on windows the rendering is faster, and other people saying that with them is the opposite, with some minor variations like people saying that linux is faster for plain downloads while windows is faster for web browsing due to better graphics.
(by the way; I haven't installed any graphic card driver on windows, which is still running on 1024x768, while linux runs on 1280x1024, with the "nv" generic driver, without fancy options, not supported by my old card) The closest to a suggestion of possible solutions was someone saying tha compilation may affect performance, I guess it was both about kernel compilation, and the web browsers themselves.I'll google a bit more about how to "compile for speed", both kernels and programs (maybe the x server
i recently purchased my second laptop, primarily for linux. When i chose it, my main concern was battery life. Just to make a side note. When i say battery life, i mean how long the computer takes until the battery goes flat. Not how many years/ect it takes till the battery will no longer hold charge.
My new computer claims to be able to get 10 hours. Although it's a bit off, i get a satisfying little bit over 6 hours, from full charge. This is running Windows 7. I couldn't wait to put Linux on my new computer, i have, but it just isn't satisfying because i only get about 4 hours while running linux, tried three different distros, and all roughly the same.
I have installed Wubi (Ubuntu 10.10) recently. It takes more time to boot than Windows. But my main concern is that my browsing speed is much slower compared to that on Windows 7. How can this be resolved?

Some friends told me to try OpenSUSE because it has really been polished over the last few years.Install went smoothly got everything working properly except for my video card. My video card is an ATI HD4890 with sound support over HDMI. I had the sound working in Ubuntu using the non-oss ATI drivers. I was wondering if someone could please teach me how to install them again here on OpenSUSE 11.3. My screen fonts and colors also look terrible compared to Windows or Ubuntu.
Is there a way I can make it look better? I remember CCC (Catalyst Control Center for ATI) had two color formats (RGB and YCbCr). I had to set it to YCbCr because my screen is an HDTV and it looked much cleaner than RGB. Is there a way I can acheive similar results with OpenSUSE?

Because of a problem with system freezes I have updated to the 2.6.33-020633rc7 kernal but this hasn't had any impact one way or another on wireless speeds.
My router is a Belkin WRT300n.
I can't quantify the behavior, but every time I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32-bit), I get the impression that I'm using a much slower machine. All I have to compare it to is my Windows 7 64-bit install on the same machine (specs in signature), where almost everything is very snappy by comparison.
I don't have skipping audio or delayed video when watching DVDs in VLC Media Player, and Urban Terror (a 3D game) runs fine, but just general stuff like browsing the filesystem (Nautilus) and Firefox seems reaaaaallly sluggish compared to the Windows 7 counterparts.
What I'm doing at the time does not appear to affect the sluggishness. I have noticed the same impression of sloth both while copying large files, and while doing nothing in particular. That's not how it's supposed to work, is it? Does an Ubuntu install normally slow down over time? I have only been running 10.04 LTS since last October or so.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know much about lvm and I've managed to screw up a drive. I had a 500GB drive with FC14 on it and I wanted to copy over a load of data to my new 1TB that was replacing it. I set up my new install the same way as the old...including the same volume names (error number 1 I think) I successfully mounted the old/500GB drive (using vgscan and vgchange -a y etc.) using a laptop (running FC13) and an external hdd cradle. I could access the files I wanted but this wasn't the machine I wanted to copy them to (I was doing this while waiting for the install to finish on the new drive).
When I tried the same process on the new install I found that having two lvm with the same name meant I couldn't mount the external one. So I opened the disk utility (palimsest) and was going to change the name of the old volume group but it wouldn't let me do that. I then thought maybe I could get away with just changing the name of the partition where the files were and maybe I could add it to the mounted group or something so I changed it to lv_home2. This changed the name of my new/1TB lv_home to lv_home2 as well. So thinking that wasn't the answer I just changed the name of the new lv_home2 back to lv_home.
From that point on I haven't been able to see the old drives partitions (the new volume group still works so far). I has a physical volume but the volume group and volume names are gone from view. When I try to vgscan on my main computer or the laptop I had it working on earlier I get:

I'm running f13 on eeeeeeepc netbook .... gnome and compiz The <FN> keys that control volume are not working, but brightness, for example, works fine. The keyboard settings in gnome do not seem to allow me to set the volume to the <fn> key combos.

View 2 Replies View RelatedVolume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer.They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. I have a server in a data centre, which is supposed to have a 100Mbit line. Peak rates at the moment on my server are in the region of 20Mb, which should be easily handled. Is there anyway I can trace how much more bandwidth is available at any one time or if things are becoming sluggish on the server?

But with Ubuntu 9.10 it shows; 305-310 MB and the top RAM use item is the; compiz.real, which I think is a display desktop effects application. I have the nvidia video card driver installed, and that nvidia X-Server configuration tool. Also I can not find where that compiz options is at, ( the display options in system, preferances does not open, and says to use my video card tool ).

I used to get a decent speed in BitTorrent (using KTorrent 2.2.1) there, since I had earlier used Windows and the speed wasn't as good, even in Windows 7. Recently, I installed openSUSE 11.2 and found that I wasn't getting the good speeds in KTorrent. The overall performance was a fraction of what I used to get in the older Linux installation.
I decided to verify whether my suspicions were justified by again reinstalling openSUSE 10.3. When I did this, I was again able to get the great performance I used to get always with openSUSE 10.3 running KTorrent 2.2.1 I don't know what causes this, but I know that this sad thing really has happened. A newer version is actually not worth it! I hope my voice reaches the openSUSE developers and such bad incidences don't occur anymore.
I have become a recent fan of linux and I want to install ubuntu on my acer aspire 5630 because vista runs terrible on it. Everything seems to work fine when I run it off the cd im just wondering if it will still work great when i actually install it. Is there any big difference between running the os off the cd compared to when you actually install it?

From the knoppix cd i can find harddrive but when i try to access it im asked for a password. However dont know the password I have tried the password from his windows login but that doesnt work. Is there another way to access the drive so i dont have to use a password? If possible i would like to avoid removing the harddrive from the laptop. The installed OS is win7.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI notice that the NVIDIA GPU on my Dell XPS M1330 gets much hotter under Lucid than with Karmic (or Windows).While the temperature monitor in the "nvidia x server settings" showed between 50 - 60 degrees under Karmic I get readings above 70 degrees with Lucid and the fan is permanently on. I have no GPU intensive applications running.

There appears to be no .iso file in the UDF Volume.
