Fedora Hardware :: Flash Memory Card Reader / Writer

Jan 20, 2010

Looking for a card reader/writter that will support most current card types. I am running Fedora 12 x86_64. Are there any gotchas, that I need to watch for? Also, Internal vs. external, any benifits of one over the other, or is it just personal preference?

Ubuntu :: File Copying Freezes - Flash Memory Card

Jul 3, 2010

Using 10.04 Netbook version. I am finding on my Asus EEE 901 that sometimes file copy just seems to freeze - seems to happen usually when copying from the built-in SSD memory to the plug-in SDHC memory card. I have tried reformatting the card and using a different card. It is not just this computer since I found the same thing on my last Asus which was the 900 model.

I am told that there are issues with Nautilus. Is there anything which can be done to improve this or is there anything else which I can install besides Nautilus? I am assuming that there is some issue related to Ubuntu's handling of SDHC memory cards.

It is becoming annoying because it seems to work sometimes and then not. When it happens only option seems to be to turn the netbook off and on again. Even if the file copy is cancelled the card seems to be unaccesible until rebooted.

Also after a certain point it seems that when I try and copy new files to the card, they appear to copy ok but obviously are corrupt in some way - when you try to play videos for instance they are faulty.

Fedora :: Loading Modules To Work With Card Reader Using F13?

Aug 7, 2010

I found a solution to my card reader problem in a another fedora post but when I type the code in terminal I get:
all config files need.conf /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
How to write this code so I wont get this error and I can load these modules and also how to edit the modprobe.conf.

The code is below, using fedora 13.
You must load these two modules to work with card reader.
First : Remove the card from the Reader!
AS superuser type in console :
1. /sbin/modprobe tifm_core <enter>
2. /sbin/modprobe tifm_sd <enter>

If you want to automate these modules loading do the following :
edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file
add these :
alias mmc_core tifm_core
alias mmc_card tifm_sd

Fedora Hardware :: Acer Aspire One - Built-in Card Reader?

Jan 1, 2009

I have an Acer Aspire One running Fedora 10.The Aspire One has a built in multi-format memory card reader compatible with SDHC, XD, Memory Stick Pro and MMC cards, however the card reader is only detected during bootup if a card is inserted otherwise the device isn't detected, the relevant drivers aren't loaded and the card reader doesn't work.

In other words if Fedora is booted without a card in the reader and I then want to use the card reader I have to insert a card and reboot in order to use it, after which cards can be inserted & removed and are detected and automounted with no problems. When the card reader is working lsmod shows the following modules are loaded.

[Code]...

If the laptop is booted without a card in the reader none this shows up. I've also tried manually loading the mmc_core, mmc_block, sdhci, memstick & jmb38x_ms modules to see if this kicks the reader into life but it doesn't. Is there a way of forcing the detection of this device during bootup?

Fedora :: Getting Smart Card Reader Added As Security Device In Firefox?

Jun 10, 2009

Anyone running fedora 11 have any luck getting a smart card reader added as a security device under firefox?
Specifically from firefox: Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Encryption tab-Security_Devices-Load;
Enter arbitrary name and "/usr/lib64/libcoolkeypk11.so" as the module.

This worked fine in fedora10 and was the necessary step to getting a card reader to work with firefox. In fedora11 (with firefox beta) the browser just comes back with nothing, it doesn't even respond. Note I am familiar with the concept of pki and certificates as well as certutil, pkcs11_inspect, pklogin_finder, etc. Also note utlities like pkcs11_inspect and pklogin_finder and esc all work and communicate with the reader and read the contents of the card but smart card login configured via the authentication applet (as working in fedora 10) is not working either.

Hardware :: San Disk Memory Stick PRO Duo Reader?

Jan 16, 2010

I'm trying to get the built-in reader on my system working. It's one of those multi-slot ones on the front of the box. The card I have is specifically a "San Disk Memory Stick PRO Duo", this sucker here: [URL]

The light on the reader will light up, but there's zip in any of the kernel logs. I tried the obvious kmods to get it working - tifm_7xx1, tifm_sd, tifm_core, via_sdmmc, mmc_core, etc but no luck.

Nothing seems to be useful in lspci or lsusb:

Fedora Hardware :: Can't Write To Flash Memory. Automatically Set As Read-only

Jan 21, 2010

I used to be able to write to my SD memory card but just recently it is being automatically mounted as read-only. I checked the read-only tab and tried to set it to the lock position, and to the unlock position. Neither position makes a difference. It was working normally a few days ago. I also tried changing the permission using su

ls -lt gives the following result
drwxr-xr-x 4 col root 16384 1970-01-01 01:00 CANON_DC
chmod chgrp and chown in su mode don't change anything either.

I tried mounting a different 1GB SD card and it works perfectly. I noticed that when I mount this card I get a window asking me what I want to do, but I don't get this on the other card. It must some kind of setting related to the unwriteable card.

I am using F10 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.i686

The wireless and Ethernet hardware where either not found or, if they were found, they did't work and there were no possibilities to make it work.

The strange thing is that almost every time after I attempted to boot form the memory when booting window as usual, the Ethernet hardware was not found anymore also under window!

Debian Hardware :: Card Reader Won't Mount?

Aug 4, 2011

I've recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad z470, and installed Debian Wheezy amd64 on it first thing. I was pleased to find that almost everything worked "out of the box." The only problems were the hotkeys and the card reader. I don't care if the hotkeys ever work, but the non-working card reader is more aggravating than I anticipated. I would be most obliged if anyone could lend a hand. So, first things first, here's the output of uname -a:Linux cerulean 2.6.39-2-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Jul 5 02:51:22 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/LinuxHere's the syslog output upon inserting an sd card into reader:

Ubuntu :: 10.10 (64) Hangs On Boot With USB Card Reader

Apr 18, 2011

My PC is an Intel Core-i7-950 with 8GB RAM. The motherboard is an Intel Extreme, DX580G. Ubuntu (64) 10.10 is the only OS run on this system, and uses the entire hard-disk.

Today, I purchased an internal USB card reader that connects to the USB socket on the motherboard. Once I connected it, the PC started hanging on boot. When it hangs, there is nothing but a non-blinking, still cursor on the top left corner of the screen.

Earlier I had set the Grub2 boot delay to '0', and therefore I guess I do not get to see any messages or the Grub2 menu.

The story is the same with an external USB card-reader. If I connect the external card-reader and try to boot, the PC hangs in the manner described above.

If I disconnect the internal / external USB card-reader, everything is normal.

The following web-page describes the problem in the manner I can understand. But it does not provide a permanent solution.

Hardware :: Get Rid Of SD Card Reader Included In 3G Modem?

Mar 4, 2011

I'm using USB 3G modem and it has SD card reader embedded.
I am also using USB hard drive as boot device. It is a Netgear WNDR 3700 router.
I am posting it in here because it is a general question, not really associated with embedded installations.
When loading the system from power up my HDD get's /dev/sda assigned and my modem SD card reader: /dev/sdb [although there's no SD card inserted].
But when booting after restart hard drive is sdb and modem is sda. Thanks to that I get kernel panic and all is over. I have to manually reboot.
I cannot use initrdfs so I can't use UUID/LABEL to identify the device.
Is there any way I could stop this SD card reader from loading?
I believe it uses usb mass storage driver, just as my hdd.

This is from the boot log Code...
