Fedora :: F13: Increase The Number Of Loop Device

Sep 17, 2010

In previous Fedora, we may add the following line to /etc/modprobe.conf

options loop max_loop=64

to increase the loop devices to 64.

However, this method no longer works in Fedora 13.

May I know how to increase loop devices in Fedora 13?

General :: Get A Shell Script To Loop Through A Number Of Directories And Subdirectories?

Jul 27, 2010

I'm looking to get a shell script to loop through a number of directories and subdirectories,looking for files that contain a particular substring, and renaming the file by replacing the search string with a different substring. For example if you had a directory full of folders that contained digital photos (along with various other files which would need to remain unaffected), and the intent was to remove the "DSC_" prefix from several thousand files buried within. I've whipped up a rather long-winded solution that works well for this purpose but chokes on directory names with spaces. I am reasonably sure there's a 2 or 3-liner that would accomplish this exact same task.

function investigate
{
path=$1
for file in `ls $1`
#for file in *

General :: Can't Find Boot Device - Error "Unable To Determine Major/minor Number Of Root Device"

Mar 17, 2011

I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. Now I tried to boot it, I ended up failing with this message: Code: Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda1 ... Root device '/dev/sda1' doesn't exist, Attempting to create it. ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sda1' Here is the important part of my menu.lst:

I simply copy&pasted the Arch-entry, i.e. I also had the disk by uuid there. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). In this case I had this error message:

SUSE / Novell :: Display Filename Rather Than Loop Device?

Mar 17, 2010

I have an iso image I'm mounting-

# mount -o loop /root/image.iso /media/cdrom in SLES10 (and SLES9), "mount" displays the name of the iso file:
# mount
...
/root/image.iso on /media/cdrom type iso9660 (rw,loop=/dev/loop0)

However, in SLES11, "mount" now displays the loop device rather than the filename:

# mount
...
/dev/loop0 on /media/cdrom type iso9660 (rw)

This is somewhat less than useful. Is there any way to display the filename rather than the loop device?

General :: Mounted Loop Device Prevents Proper Shutdown

May 4, 2011

I've recently started using Linux Mint (version 10) on a Dell Mini 1012 netbook. I'm using a loop device to mount a file on a NAS but whenever this loop device is mounted and has been accessed, my machine fails to shutdown.

Firstly I mount a share on the NAS using cifs (the NAS is aimed at Windows machines so doesn't support NFS). I have a sparse file on the share (which I created using Cygwin in Windows, using the dd command).

I used losetup to create a loop device and formatted it as reiserfs.This works and I can successfully use the mount point. I'm using it with Backintime.If I try to shutdown my machine without unmounting the loop device, shutdown hangs.

These messages just keep repeating and the system never shuts down.So I assume the problem is something to do with unmounting the CIFS/loop device.If I unmount the loop device all is fine. I don't need to unmount the cifs share.Any ideas on how to resolve? Should I add a script to run during shutdown (i.e linked from /etc/rc0.d and /etc/rc6.d) to sync and unmount the loop device? Or is there a better solution?

Networking :: Increase Storage Space Of Server With NAS/DAS Device Via Gigabit Ethernet?

Feb 8, 2010

Cost effective (the people want cheap) solution to increase server storage space with as little impact on throughput (what I want) as possible. I have a server that sends instructions to 20 clients to perform certain tasks. The clients send gigs of data back to the server for storage.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Network: Gigabit Ethernet
Clients: (20) HP, Solaris, Linux
Linux Server: Dell R805 PowerEdge (QUAD Core Athlons 16 gigs of ram, 4 gigabit ports.

Selected directories are mounted (NFS) by clients. One directory to be mounted by the clients contains executable files. Mount commands are sent from the server (rsh) to the clients. Yes I know (ssh) but this is how the software was originally written so let's go with it.

The clients then receive commands to execute the binaries contained within the mounted directory. The binaries basically create an image of the clients filesystem including special applications. The client then sends the files and directories to the server which stores this image. This process can be reversed to restore a client to the initial baseline image.

In a nut shell, 20 clients are sending gigs of data to the server for storage. I need to attach a NAS (gigabit) to extend the storage capability of the server. The server would mount (NFS) to the hard drives on the NAS. The NAS, configured as a direct attached storage device (DAS), means the storage device is connected directly to the server and not the network (which makes it a DAS). This would provide direct storage expansion for the server. However, this configuration cannot be a bottleneck that significantly hinders performance.

Clients <---data---->Server<----storage---->DAS/NAS

1) Will a low end NAS (gigabit port) work? (NetGear 1TB ReadyNAS Duo, RND2110-100NAS) or something with a higher rated throughput (QNAP TS-239 Pro II)

2) Low end won't work, go with ?

3) Does the processor on the NAS play any role that would determine the performance of this configuration given that the server would mount directly to a directory on this device (DAS/NAS)?

Ubuntu Installation :: Determine Boot Device Number?

Jun 30, 2011

I'm currently running Ubuntu (w/ GRUB) and Windows XP. I'd like to remove Ubuntu and run the recovery on Windows XP because it has started not running correctly. The computer is about 5 years old and I figured I'd just wipe it clean and start over (read: remove Ubuntu and reinstall windows via the recovery console).

I intend to follow the tutorial here: [URL]

However, I'm confused about determining the boot device number for Windows. I've run "sudo fdisk -l" and I can identify the windows drive in the list it says:

Device: /dev/sda1
Boot: *
Start: 1
End: 19352
Blocks: 155444908+
Id: 7
System: HPFS/NTFS

Am I looking for the 7, the 1, or something completely different? This is also the first partition on the list.

sda2 (id: c) is a FAT32 drive. I think this is the recovery partition included on the HP desktop.

sda3 (id:83) is Linux
sda4 (id: 82) is swap

I just need to run fixmbr.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lirc: No /dev/lirc0 - Actual Device Number Changes On Restart

May 30, 2010

My only issue that I can't figure out thus far is the remote. I'm using a Hauppauge Nova-T USB Stick, and generally the setup for the Nova-T 500 is good. No problem with lircd.conf, .lircrc etc. My problem is that the remote doesn't work on startup. Looked in /etc/lirc/hardware.conf and it says, as expected: REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/lirc0"

Which doesn't work because I have no /dev/lirc0 (I do have a /dev/lircd). However, running /proc/bus/input/devices, I discover that my IR receiver is event5, so if I change the /etc/lirc/hardware.conf to: REMOTE_DEVICE="/dev/input/event5"

And restart lirc, it works fine. Unfortunately, upon restarting the PC, the IR receiver doesn't always have the same path - eg it could be event6 or event8 etc - so then I need to fix the /etc/lirc/hardware.conf again.

Fedora Hardware :: Full Speed USB MSC Device Detected As Input Device?

Apr 7, 2011

I am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive.Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

Fedora :: Bash: While Loop Will Not End

Jan 9, 2010

This gives a selection menu where you choose an option, and it should continue. I have several of these as part of a much larger script, but something is wrong with this while loop.

Code:
VARIABLEINPUT="1"
if [ $VARIABLEINPUT == "1" ] ; then
echo -e "${YELLOW}How often would you like the automatic update and maintenance to occur after the installation?:
${RED}1)${WHITE} Hourly
${RED}2)${WHITE} Daily
${RED}3)${WHITE} Weekly
${RED}4)${WHITE} Monthly
"
[Code].....

A very simple loop that uses a variable from earlier in the script to adjust variables for later in the script. For some reason, this while loop will not end - I've noted where with echos.
