Fedora :: Create Install DVD From A Currently Running F10 Installation?

Jul 16, 2009

I need to install F10 on three computer systems donated recently to a village school - the location has extremely erratic Internet bandwidth, so installation/update through Internet is well nigh impossible.

I have a currently functioning Fedora 10 x86_64 installation at my home.

I wanted to create a bootable DVD of sorts from my home installation, which I can then run on the three machines at the school, and complete the installation. All games, gedit text editor, Firefox (for whatever its worth), eclipse installation, Rhythmbox music player, etc. that is installed on my home system Fedora 10 I want to be able to carry with the DVD.

The HW configurations on the donated machines are extremely basic - AMD 64 bit processors, one has 2GB, two machines have 3 GB RAMs, VGA monitors, one SATA Hard Disk of 80GB each and KBD/Mouse. For the DVD drive I plan to loan out my home one or the installation purposes.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Multi-partitioned System Running Both Arch?

Feb 19, 2010

Firstly im a linux newbie so try and bear with me, and make any advice clear anywho Ive been running ubuntu for a while on a single partition. Ive recently been looking into other distros and came across arch linux. As i installed arch it was recommended that you create partitions for various directories, such as boot, tmp etc.

Ive read the advantages of this and would now like to set ubuntu up in a similar fashion, alongside arch. Whats the 'best' way to do this. Can ubuntu use the partitions set up by arch? Will i have to reinstall ubuntu? eh i dont know if my question makes sense since its late here and its a topic i know little about. To put it simply: how do you create a multi-partitioned system running both ubuntu and arch

Fedora :: Create An Install DVD For FC 12?

Jan 26, 2010

I'm trying to create an install DVD for FC 12. This is the command I would normally use to write CDs

Code:
cdrecord dev=1,0,0 Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso
But with a DVD, I'm getting this error message:
Code:
cdrecord: Drive does not support TAO recording.
cdrecord: Illegal write mode for this drive.

I really don't want to read several hours of User Manuals to learn how to write a single DVD. This is a standard thing that everyone does, right? What's the easiest way write an iso file to a DVD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Custom Install Kernel And Initrd?

Mar 26, 2010

I need to install Ubuntu on approximately 50-60 netbooks. None of them have CD drives, and I don't want to have to install them individually, walking around with a USB stick. I figured the fastest way to install on so many machines is to use a combination of apt-cacher (http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-set-up...ith-apt-cacher) and netbooting. I have successfully booted one machine to test, but as soon as the kernel comes up, support for the network interface is gone. Specifically, the "atl1c" module is not included on the netboot initrd image. Also, I would like to try to use preseeding, and I need to get that onto the initrd as well.

So, to summarize my question: How can I create a custom install kernel and initrd? I have a feeling it's related to the "debian-installer" category in the package repository, but I have not found any good documentation about doing this.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create Install Cd That Doesn't Need Network Access?

Aug 23, 2011

I'm trying to create a 10.04.3 installed with a specific set of packages: nothing obviously special about it, just ubuntu-desktop, a few devel tools, and with a pre-seed file that sets up a few non-default parameters.

Everything works exactly the way I want it to, except for one important detail: the install always pulls packages over the network (and possibly updates to the apt database--it's not always easy to tell, during the install, exactly what it's doing). In any case, it stalls if the network goes away in the middle of the install, and since the install is intended for places with poor, intermittent network connectivity, so this is an issue for me.

I tried doing an install without any network connectivity, and it succeeded, so all the necessary packages are in the ISO. It's only when the network is available that it tries to pull over something (possibly apt files, since that's where the process seems to hang for hours when there is a slow network). So I can install from scratch in 10 minutes when the network is disabled and 2 hours when the network is enabled--and no other changes!

I don't care if the resulting ISO file doesn't fit on a CD (as long as it fits onto a DVD), but I want an ISO that doesn't insist on reaching out over the network during the install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Into Partition From Running System?

Aug 26, 2010

Rather than booting into a CD, or rebooting into a partition, or rebooting at all or clobbering my MBR or installing GRUB, I would like to install Ubuntu into an existing partition from an already running Ubuntu installation. Because of my requirements, LUBI or UNetBootin would not work because it (1) overwrites the bootloader (e.g., GRUB or NT bootloader) and (2) requires a reboot for the installation.

Is this possible? It seems like the Debian installer could just be run from the command line, but I don't know how you'd point to the right stuff (e.g., an ISO image).

Boot screen for fedora came up, hit enter and fedora started loading. The little balloon started filling up, got to a quarter full and then screen went black. Had to reboot to get going again, same thing happened. Can anybody tell me what may be causing it,i.e. black screen. Fedora boots up and runs lovely with internal h/d removed. Any help very gratefully received. M/c has intel dual core processor, 3 gig of ram.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Create Partition To Install To Unusable Space / Resolve This?

Jan 25, 2010

When I boot the ubuntu live cd (9.10) and attempt to install it only gives two options at the partitioning screen. One is to use the whole disk and the other is to manualy assign partitions. I told it to resize one of my partitions and created 18GB of free space. However, it tells me this space is "unusable". It wouldn't let me do anything with it and I used windows vista disk manager to add it back to the original partition. I have one hard drive with four partitions. One is a restore partition, one windows partition, one storage partition, and one that says xp although i don't have xp installed. It might be used by the acer restore program. It's an acer aspire 6920.
