Fedora :: Computer Slows To A Halt - Seems Like 1 Frame Per 20sec

Apr 2, 2010

I didn't notice it before i installed compiz fusion, but perhaps it was happening then as well because i didn't play with fedora too much, but -- my problem is that after i open a few windows and a few minutes pass the entire system bogs down to what seems like 1 frame per 20sec. i can't even forcequit out of applications, and if i do it doesn't solve the problem. I read somewhere that GNOME might be trying to connect to the internet and hanging? ...

running: Fedora 12

Fedora X86/64bit :: F13 Slows Down Randomly So Computer Is Unusable

Sep 17, 2010

I'm new to Fedora/Linux trying it out because I'm becoming hacked off with Windows taking so much time to do anything. The problem I have is that every now and again the computer slows down so drastically that the mouse movements are jerky, response to clicks/key inputs take about 2-3 mins to get a response and the only solution is to press and hold the power button. I'm running a Packard Bell Dot M/U. It has mobile celeron 1.3GHz 64 bit, 3GB ram. Intel wi-fi, atheros LAN (i think), HDMI output. I believe that it is v similar to an Acer Aspire 1410 (but not 100% same).

Ubuntu :: Computer Locks Up Slows Way Down?

Jul 9, 2011

About a week after installing 11.04, I started noticing that my computer basically locks up after leaving it for many hours. When I come back, I cant get any programs to respond. I click on Firefox and it takes about one minute for it to finally respond. If I try to launch Konsole, it locks up too. But suddenly all programs start responding at the same time, after about one minute.

This is very frustrating and I just feel the problem is zeitgeist. Of course I am not sure because I cant even run System Monitor to check the problem since I cant run any apps for about a minute. By the time I run System Monitor everything is working again.

Ubuntu :: Bash Input - Output Error - Entire Computer Came Screeching To A Halt

Jul 21, 2010

I am having a strange problem I've never encountered before. I have an Asus Eee S101 10.1" netbook with the 32GB SSD. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition.

The other day, I was browsing with Firefox, when suddenly the entire computer came screeching to a halt. Had to power it down with the power button. After this happened, I have been unable to use the same Firefox profile I had been using. I had to start Firefox from the command line with the -ProfileManager switch, then create a new profile to keep browsing.

I wanted to completely get rid of the old profile, so from the Profile Manager I tried to delete the old one. Computer hung, had to reboot with the power switch. I then tried to browse to the .mozilla/firefox directory and delete the profile's directory there, from both Nautilus and the command line. Both times, the computer froze.

I tried a few more times, and the couple of times the computer didn't freeze, I got an error from the command line saying a Bash input/output error. After this error appeared, it would appear no matter what command I ran - I couldn't even run a sudo reboot now.

I can create/delete other files and directories, just not that Firefox profile.

I tried clearing out the history and cookie files, and i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF but the problem still persists. I have tried other browsers that worked fine with images, but didn't find any that i really liked.

Ubuntu :: Tried CoLinux, Which Requires Admin Access, And Portable Remix, Which Gives Some Unnecessary GUI And Slows The Computer Down?

Feb 14, 2010

This isn't an Ubuntu question as much as it is a general Linux question, but is there a text based Linux emulator (preferably BASH) similar to DOSBox?See, I need GAS, Gnu Linker, gdb... pretty much everything in binutils, as well as a platform to test my programs at school, which runs Windows. I've tried VirtualBox, VMware and QEmu; QEmu is a b**** to access any files outside of the VM, VMware is hard to get portable, and all 3 require administrator access. I've also tried CoLinux, which requires admin access, and PortableUbuntuRemix, which gives me some unnecessary GUI and slows the computer down

Red Hat / Fedora :: Server Rebooting No Kernel Panic Halt?

May 14, 2010

We have a server running CentOS 5 Linux 2.6.18-128.1.16.el5xen #1 SMP Tue Jun 30 06:39:23 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU Linux. We've seen at random times that the server will just reboot and nothing is logged in messages. I tried to enable kdump but was only able to get a 5.4 gig dump since our /var directory is set to 10GB. Here is the messages I see before and after the server restart. I had thought that when a kernel panics, it is supposed to halt the system and not reboot it. My /proc/sys/kernel/panic is set to 0. I can run an update but want to have some sort of idea what is causing the issue and if the update will fix anything.

Fedora :: Compiz Slows Down After RAM Memory Upgrade

Oct 19, 2009

I've just added an extra 1GB of RAM memory to my laptop (HP 530). Now I have 2 GB. Everything runs great, except Compiz and 3D games. It looks like anything that's related to the graphics card now slows down. Rotating the cube lags badly, so does the Burn effect, and UrbanTerror is lagging too.

Before the upgrade, I had a Samsung 1GB SO-DIMM, 667 MHz. Then, I bought a Kingston 1GB SO-DIMM, 667 MHz too. When the laptop boots with either of the SO-DIMMs (only ONE GB at a time), everything runs smoothly, like before. But when I put both of them (regardless of the order in the sockets), my video card seems to slow down at nearly half of it's speed.

I haven't tried with Windows yet. Also, my graphics card has a dedicated memory of 256 MB, so there's no memory sharing between video and the RAM.

I just don't get it. Also, there are other people that seem to have slowdowns after upgrading the RAM, but usually the whole system is affected. For me, it's just the video. It actually boots faster with the 2 GB. Yet I found no clear solution to this.

Running Fedora 10 i686, on a 32-bit Intel Core Duo @2200 MHz, video card Intel 945GM Express, with 256 MB of dedicated memory. The swap partition is 2.8 GB in size.

Fedora Networking :: PPPoE Slows Or Does Not Load Certain Websites?

May 7, 2011

First some specs:
F13
NetworkManager Applet 0.8.3.998
Driver r8169
Opera 11 and Firefox 3.6.16

Recently my ISP switched to PPPoEand since then my internet connection has been giving me problems. While browsing, some websites load fine, some websites load fine after I refresh once or twice, some load really slowly and the formatting tends to be messed up and some websites won't load at all (they stop at waiting for website...). Ping for all of these sites is however fine. Also uploading and downloading either from sites like rapidshare or using torrents is also fine. The same ISP also provides a second similar connection which is connected through a wireless router to two computers (one via a wired connection and one through wireless) both running Win 7 and everything works fine over there.

Things I've tried.
I tried using the router changing it's setting to my connection and connecting through that but the problem remains. After googling I thought it might be an MTU issue so tried this:

ping -M do -c 3 -s 1464 www.myce.com and got
PING myce.com (212.204.237.148) 1464(1492) bytes of data.
1472 bytes from www.myce.com (212.204.237.148): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=129 ms
1472 bytes from www.myce.com (212.204.237.148): icmp_seq=2 ttl=47 time=129 ms
1472 bytes from www.myce.com (212.204.237.148): icmp_seq=3 ttl=47 time=130 ms
--- myce.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2133ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 129.261/129.683/130.044/0.436 ms

This works for various websites whether they load or not. My MTU is set at 1492 but I've tried various lower numbers all the way down to 1300 but no luck. I tried disabling ipv6 in Firefox but no change.

Fedora :: System Grinds To Halt - Takes Several Seconds Just To Move Cursor

Aug 21, 2011

I'm running Fedora 14. I'm running a Athlon X2 with 4gb memory and nVidia 8400. I'm using the nvidia drivers ver 260. I'm running KDE 4.6. I've disabled desktop effects (when turnt on they work a charm, performance issues are the same either way). If I open any more than a few applications at once, the system grinds to a halt. even working with Kwrite is painful and it can take several seconds just to move the cursor, browsing the file is almost impossible.

When I have even 7 windows open X goes into a frenzy and sticks around 90% cpu usage. Even with no windows open if I move my mouse between screens X cpu usage stays between 50% and 90%. The system is unbearably slow. i have a XP Pro system with the same spec, lower GPU and I have no problems having 2/3 Visual Studios open, Photoshop, a few skype windows, Eclipse and the android emulator the system remains responsive but with this Linux box I can't even do basic stuff in Kwrite without it grinding to a haltJust.

Fedora :: ERROR: Gsearchtool-spinner.c:666:bump_spinner_frame_cb: Assertion Failed: (frame != NULL)

Jun 29, 2010

my gnome searchtool crashes everytime I search something. Runnung gnome-search-tool from terminal I get the following error:

Code:

ERROR:gsearchtool-spinner.c:666:bump_spinner_frame_cb: assertion failed: (frame != NULL)

I could locate the reason for this as far as it has something to do with my icon theme. I use Mac4Lin Icon theme, which is the one causing those crashes. With another one it works fine.So the problem is now, that I don't want to change the theme, I want to find out what's the matter and fix it. Because the error message says something about spinner I tried to erase the folders "actions" and "spinner" first, but with no effect, so I restored them. how to find out exactly what's the issue or which icon causes the crash?

Also this hasn't happened in Fedora, Ubuntu, or Windows. Thus far it seems to be a debian only related issue. Also i have no "safely remove/eject" option on my external so it's a bit like i'm just unplugging it as i hear it physically just stop spinning all at once instead of theother os' wherein i can slowly kill it off.

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Unable To Halt (shut Down)?

I have tried both 'halt' and 'halt --no-apm', both with and without 'insmod halt' first. The 'reboot' command however works fine (even without 'insmod reboot') so it doesnt seem to be an acpi/apm issue. This was all tested at grub2's command line, so there isnt any problems with syntax in the config file. The laptop I am trying this on is an Acer Aspire One, I am using Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 (Lucid), and a more or less default config for grub2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6) as far as modules are concerned.
