I'd like to add my Dropbox directory to the places menu. I came over from Ubuntu, in I got used to the Ubuntu One icon in the places menu, so im missing dropbox from the list. Is there any way to add a shortcut to the "Places" menu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 12 with Gnome and I have a slight problem with my places menu. I have entries in the list that I would like to remove, but cannot figure out how. I multiboot Fedora with Windows 7 and windows 98. My Places menus looks something like this:

Code:
Home Folder
Desktop
Music .....
Now, if you notice there are 2 entries for both my 'Storage' and 'Windows 98' partitions. On of them will actually open up a window showing the contents of the partition, the other displays an error which basically says "Unable to mount, drive is already mounted". Right clicking on the entry has the same effect as left clicking, it just brings up the error message. They do not appear in the Bookmarks menu.
I did some modification of fstab, and works, but for some strange reason, there are drives shown in the Places menu that shouldn't be there when the drives (they are usb drives) are unplugged. I had to put them in fstab, because they are mp3 players and I need user privelages in order to sync them. With nothing plugged in the usb ports,I checked, and they aren't shown in mtab, and only Sansa-e260 and JOSHS PHONE are shown in fstab, although as far as I know, they shouldn't appear in Places when unmounted. Is there a way to reset it?

There are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.
I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.
I'm having a strange problem in my gnome installation. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.

I click Places -> Home Folder (or any of the other folders, including Computer), and the cursor turns to the spinning "wait" dial, but the folder won't appear. A tab appears in the bottom panel, with the title "opening ZenBeam" (or "opening Desktop" or "Starting Computer", depending on which folder I tried to open) for a few seconds, but then goes away. Left- or Right-clicking on these tabs doesn't give me any options.
This used to work normally, but stopped suddenly a few days ago, following a reboot. I'm guessing it's become corrupted, but I don't know what "it" is. I can navigate in a command line window normally.I have rebooted, and I have run System -> Administration -> Software Update, but that didn't fix the problem.I was going to add the information in System -> About This Computer, but that seems to be having the same problem.What can I do to fix this? What application is failing to run?
My problem is the links that are in the places menu in the gnome panal, all link to the appearances preferances. I'm running Fedora 14 with Gnome.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed fedora 15, I haven't seen fedora since version 7 back in 2007, and I must say, it's very impressive.I can't however figure out how to add a downloaded application, like Intellij-Idea to the activities menu. With the old gnome, you could just create a task bar short cut to any .sh and give it a png icon, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do the same for activities. Searching online doesn't help, since all I seem to find is how to add or remove packages, with the UI, which I would never do to begin with, as I am a command line person. But for some reason, I am quite impressed with this activities menu thing, and I want to use it on the laptop
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to use a bookmark in the Main Menu (under "Places"), I get an error message. For example, if I want to open my Documents folder, the message reads:
"[STOP Sign] Could not open location 'file:///home/pilotferdi/Documents'
Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/digikam" (No such file or directory)" (I had digikam installed on my computer, then I decided to remove it.)When I open a Nautilus file browser, and choose "Information" from the side pane, my home directory is listed with these three options (buttons) below:
1. Open with digikam
2. Open with Gwenview
3. Open with Open Folder
Somehow, the default choice, "Open with Open Folder" has been replaced with "Open with digikam", and I cannot access the bookmarks anymore. I think I need to make "Open with Open Folder" the default option when I click on a bookmark, but I don't know how to do it. I tried without success to use alacarte to make the changes.
For about a week or two when I try to open a folder from the menu "Places" of Gnome 2.32.0 (with Fedora 14 OS) the program Rythmbox starts instead. This happens even when I try to access a connected harddrive which requires entry of a code. After entering the code again Rythmbox opens! This doesn't happen only with "Computer", "Network" and "Connect to Server" of "Places". I can't think of anything that I did (apart from using Rythmbox quite often recently) that could have caused this, so I assume that it is a bug of Gnome. Have other people encountered this problem? (I assume that it is not Fedora specific, but rather a general problem of Gnome) If so,
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 11 onto my computer on top of Linux Mint. Originally I was using Mint's bootloader, but I'm ditching Mint soon for another OS so I'm migrating to Fedora's bootloader to make the transition easier. For a while I couldn't get Mint to appear on Fedora's Grub menu, but during that time I could still access the internet on Fedora. However, once I successfully added Mint to Fedora's grub menu, the wireless suddenly stopped working on Fedora (though it still works on Mint.) I can connect to the network on Fedora but it gives me the awesome "host does not exist" message when I try to ping anything. Any insight as to why this might have happened after I managed to successfully boot Mint from the Fedora boot menu?

when i try open folders from desktop all opens correctly Ubuntu 10.10
I have two Xubuntu machines. On one I upgraded in place, no problem. But the other got messed up so I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 from scratch. I like the new Xubuntu, including changes they've made with this version, but...on the fresh install, the Places menu is missing (see attached).
Places is one really neat feature that my distro had the Windows doesn't; it makes/made life easier for me--I hate to see it just go away. Does anyone know how to bring it back? It doesn't seem to be available under Add New Items (to the panel).

View 5 Replies View RelatedSomething very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

If I use UUID in fstab to mount additional partitions I get duplicate entries for the partitions in the Places Menu. I can solve the problem by mounting the partitions by Label ( /dev/sdb2 /mountpoint ) but half of the time grub2 will not mount the drive correctly using this method and will change the volume ID (sdb2 becomes sdf2) .
