I swap hard disk from one machine to another. Now when I do ifconfig all I see is lo interface listed, eth0 disappeared.
Is there a way for debian to reconsider what drivers to load for eth0 ?
I am trying to make a multipass USB flash drive which basically turns say a bootable live iso into a flash drive, but many of them at once and accessing them using GRUB. The only issue I am having is I have to do this in Windows. So I am currently using my VM to do it and the Grub installer and petousb tool are not recognizing ANY drives at all on the system. I can use my usbs on the VM though.

I've been racking my brains over the past few days trying to figure out why my NIC card (network interface card) won't show up in the ifcfg-eth0 file.When I configure a new server (like this one) I always go to:/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and from there I usally see the name of my NIC's manufacturer's name and the hardware MAC address.Then it's only a simple process of entering the server's IP address, netmask and gateway and I'm up and running in no time...But not in this case! the ifcfg-eth0 file is completely blank! There's not ONE single line of config info in it... (?)The server runs an Intel core 2 duo (dual-core) CPU with 1 gig of RAM.
I've even re-formatted the drive and re-installed Centos 5.1 on the darn thing 3 times and it simply won't work.The server cannot resolve when I do a wgetIt also gives me a 'resolution problem in the named configuration'.What I don't understand is that the 2 small LEDs on the Cat 5 cable lights up and flash at what appear to be regular intervals here.
I had a server that I use for Radius DNS and Trying to put DHCP on it I have My pool in it seems right. I have 2 adresses aliased one being a helper IP that the router will send the request to. When I try to start the dhcp server I get the following.

My office has a box which is, by necessity, dual-boot WinXP/Slack. The Slackware I'm running there is -current, all great and fine. Until now... It turned out that my mobo, an ASUS P5KPL-CM, died after a power surge. Since the XP needs software activation, we replaced it for an exact copy of the mobo. After the change the box worked fine in XP, and I was able to connect to the network via the Ethernet interface. BTW, the Slackware version is Slackware-current, updated as of the Jan 9 update (after that I was no longer able to connect to the Net with Slack). However, in Slackware there was a problem: eth0 was no longer recognized. Using /sbin/ifconfig only listed the lo (loopback) interface. The lspci output is:

On my machine (Desktop PC) I have 2 network card : wireless (rt61 802.11) and a wired card (BCM44). When I install debian 5.
The wired card is detected and logical name eth0 is assigned, while wireless is not assigned I install firmeware* software to configure the card. It is done in some way ( I used mnetwork from mepis, it works fine).
Now the problem: eth0 disapears, and no eth0 inteface found? ifconfig gives just wlan0.
Question: Why there is no eth0, it was before configuration of wlan0 ?
How to active again eth0, or ho to create the logical eth0?
I am using FC 2, and I get 'eth0 failed' during startup.

I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.
Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.
Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?

Attempting to compile an application that is not located in any of the repos yet for 11.3 64 bit. I have downloaded the appropriate src and untarred it. However, when I attempt to run the ./configure command here is the error I receive. checking build system type... I have made sure that I have all kernel-headers packages installed and am unsure as how to proceed. I tried using the command "./configure --build=x86_64" and then receive an error stating that the "SYSTEM IS NOT SUPPORTED" and continued errors stating that gcc is not installed, eve though it is.
When writing a script using command-line tools why is it more difficult using graphical tools?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was experiencing some latency issues when loading KDE on my (squeeze) HTPC box, so I decided to replace the system drive with one that was a bit faster (and larger). Faced with the unpleasantness of having to repeat the many troubleshooting and configuration issues I had with the previous installation, I decided to copy a known good installation. As it turned out it didn't make much difference. I still spent several hours reconfiguring screen and font resolutions, setting up a wireless bridge, removing unnecessary server components, reconfiguring apt proxy settings, resetting hostname and IP addresses, and getting passthrough audio working again.
Anway, once completed, the system was much more responsive, so I was happy--until I tried to burn an ISO to the DVD. When K3b loads it informs me that it is missing several necessary applications, including cdrecord, cdrdao, mkisofs, etc. All the necessary applications were installed and working on the original system which I copied. I verified their existence on the new installation via "aptitude search <packagename>". I even performed a reinstall of said packages. Nevertheless, K3b refuses to detect their existence.Just to be clear, all my boxen are built to standard. Same motherboard, same CPU, same memory, same HDDs, same DVD burners. I do this purposely to avoid just these sorts of issues. I don't see how a working configuration on one machine can fail on another. I am beginning to believe that this is yet more evidence to support my theory that the universe is not only unpredictable, but arbitrary and inconsistent and possibly even perverse.
5.10 Breezy configured as machine controller. Works great eth0 is a fixed IP to communicate with controller comms board. Not easy at all to alter - the comms board is hard coded to listen on eth0 for commands.
I can use eth1 as the default gateway and ping google.com, etc. But when I now attempt to communicate with the controller with netcat, e.g.

I obviously never get an answer since the request is passed via eth1. Using the -g option with netcat doesn't work either. I had a look at iptables but it doesn't seem to be able to do what I want. How I can still use eth0 as my communication port to the controller whilst eth1 is the default gateway?
I have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.
My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...
The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2
Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...
I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).
If I uncheck and recheck "Enable Networking" in the Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 I would expect the wired network to disconnect (which it does) and reconnect (which it does NOT). So I tried sudo ifdown eth0 and got

I got two IP's in my dedicated server. Both are external IP's. I would like to make connections using 2nd IP address under eth0:0 interface. For example: when using "lynx whatismyip.com" should display my 2nd IP. How to do this using iptables ?

I downloaded and installed Debian Squeeze from a CD (a 700~mb file), but I seem to be missing a lot of things; mainly any wireless internet tools! I searched through aptitude and I couldn't find any sort of package. Do all copies of Debian (I downloaded the CD-1 file from a http mirror) have network tools such as network-manager-gnome?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04/Backtrack 4 (Ubuntu 8.10) system. I can get internet in the BT4 side but not in the Lucid side. In Lucid I can ping my router, and the network manager says I'm good to go, but I can't get to any web sites. It all started when I tried to put my laptop on another network by mimicking the settings of a computer I had just unplugged from the network. MAC address and all.

Most of my gnome system administration tools are (suddenly) failing to open. The system is a new installation with both KDE and gnome, and the gnome system admin tools were working fine, but now they fail silently (nothing even in .xsession-errors). For instance, if I select Synaptic Package manager from the menu, I will get the gksu prompt to enter my administrative password, which I do. Then a notification will appear in the Taskbar "Granting Rights" and then after that nothing happens, it just fails silently. Note that this also happens if I enter 'gksu synaptic' or 'gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic' at the alt-F2 command line. Note that it doesn't seem to matter whether I check "Save Password for Session" or not. The same happens for time-admin, users-admin, etc. I have tried reinstalling gnome-system-tools, system-tools-backends, and gnome-keyring with no effect. I have googled extensively and have found a few other people with this same problem, but no solutions. Note also that kdesu does still work fine, and there doesn't seem to be any such problems in KDE in general. Only in gnome and with gksu.
P.S. Let me know if you need any more info (output from commands, files, etc).
I'm having some issues creating output from kdump-tools. (Initially to diagnose some system freezes when using wine, but now I can't a staged panic to work and provide proper output.)

The system freezes, but does not dump any relevant information or reboot. It just hangs.
I want to record narration for a video, then look at the timeline of the narration so I can generate animation that is more or less in sync with it. I don't need to be accurate enough to match lip movement. I can generate the video frames with POVray, and I can make a movie out of the frames with ffmpeg. I have a microphone which plugs into my sound card, but I don't know how to record my voice, nor how to determine the time used at different points in the narration, nor how to add the audio to the video to produce a narrated movie. My OS is Debian Linux running Gnome.

The problem is I've managed to get the wifi working, but I really wanted to get the wired ethernet connection working and for some reason I can't detect it.

I'm not sure how long ago this happened but eth0 seems to have vanished from my computer. wlan0 works fine and when I plug into the switch there is carrier detect.
