as I found an easy way to create a shortcut for the terminal on the net, I was trying to apply the same method to create a shortcut for gedit, which is a great text editor that I use very often.I don't know what when wrong but I must miss something because it obviously doesn't work.Here is what I did:1.ran: sudo gconf-editor2. went to /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands3. Set "command_2" to "gedit" (I also tried with "gedit-2" as it is the name of it in the list of the applications in the apps folder)4. went to to /apps/metacity/global_keybindings5. set "run_command_2" to the key I wanted, <Control><Shift>g(I tried as well with other combinations such as <Alt>g, <Shift>g, no successAnyone knows what I didn't do or did wrong?(I suppose that it comes for the name of the command on step 3, but I don't know what could be the name to put (if you guys could also tell me where to find a kind of list for the names to put in, like for others programs, it would be nice)
I want to be able to remove the first character of a line when I highlight multiple lines in gedit. Example:

I would then highlight/select these lines, and remove the first character to make it look like this:

I'm pretty sure there is an actual shortcut for this. If there is another text editor on Linux that it would work in, it would be nice to know how to do it in that editor as well.
I'd like to open a directory with the F12 key. I haven't any problem getting Keyboard Shortcuts to run programs, but cannot figure out how to have it open a directory.I tried making a link to the directory and using that, but still no go. Edit: The directory I want opens when I use its link Can't find anything on the net for this. Most just mention that we can create custom keyboard shortcuts. I tried using /home/directory/directorydesired, but no go.

I am using Lubuntu 10.10 and have installed my application that I need. What I need is a link to the desktop that will execute the program from the /usr/share/test directory. When I execute the program I need to use "Sudo" in order to run in. how would I add a symbolic link the desktop with the appropriate permission to run the executable without compromising security. When scrolling down in nano with keyboard (holding "down" key), nano scrolls several lines at once each time. Is there any possibility to configure it so it will scroll one line each time like gedit does when scrolling in gedit?
I searched the menu-bar of gedit, i searched the web, i searched the help of gedit.(try a search on "change background to black for gedit" and similar and you know what i have gone through).If i use the embedded terminal in gedit (the only reason i use gedit at all) its background color is set to white.I barely can read it and it is useless.This is not a gnome-installation. Perhaps i miss a package needed ?

I am having some issues with the typing speed in gedit. When typing the response is usually really slow,It can be up to a second or so between rendering keystrokes. I don't believe it has anything to do with resources. I have checked the processes running when it happens and everything looks pretty normal cpu usuage is also very low at the time. The system is very responsive with everything else at the time.
I only have this problem with gedit, gvim, vim, nano etc are fine. Maybe an issue with a GTK lib of some sort? The problem happens with very small files like little bash scripts. I have including some info about the system ...

I am using the Gnome desktop in Lenny 5.03The default Gedit paper size is "US Letter", which is almost right for my HP Laserjet 4L, except that about .5 inch at the top and .25 inch at the left margin are cut off.I have defined a "Custom Size" under File -> Page Setup -> Manage Custom Sizes... with margin settings that solve the problem, but this "Custom Size" only remains the default Paper Size for printing until Gedit is closed.Using what appears to be the same gnome dialog from epiphany and evolution, the Papersize settings stick, but not from Gedit. I cannot locate any configuration file to edit, and nothing in the gconf editor seems to apply.
I'm a huge keyboard shortcut fan. I can't stand mice. So this is a big one for me.
My Alt+F10 (maximize) and Alt+F9 (minimize) keyboard shortcuts work just fine. I read everywhere (i.e., [URL]) that the Alt+F5 combo should unmaximize a maximized window. But it's not working. Can't find anything that says Debian excludes that combo.
Is this to be expected or is something amiss? I think its meant to be a default shortcut, so don't want to start playing around with customizations prematurely.

I am thinking about creating a Debian Live CD with only the base system. I would like to know how to make the CD bootable so that it can load the kernel and continue with the booting sequence.
I've got a desktop "konsole" shortcut that works great, it has a "konsole" icon on it that fits well.
I've copied this desktop shortcut to a taskbar shortcut (via drag'n drop).
The result is a usable shortcut, but with a wrong icon image.
I've reproduced the problem three times for different apps and obtained three times the same icon (but the shortcut is however good).
If I open the configuration popup, it displays the correct icon ...

I am going to start reading about how to create Debian packages. Yet I would appreciate a simple overview about the process.Specifically, I would like to start with something simple: building a package with the Firefox 3.5.7 tar.gz pre-compiled binaries.If I understand correctly, the source files from Debian are modified in some way from the upstream provider, but my little Firefox project is not dealing with sources at all. The binaries are already compiled. So I'll appreciate a simple overview about creating a package from those Firefox binaries.
I realize the Firefox binaries can be installed as is, along with needing to create three sym links. That is not my goal. I figured starting with pre-compiled binaries will be an easier start into the Debian packaging process. Further, I prefer to install software with a package manager as that provides a system that is easier to maintain long-term.I suspect that an aide to my learning would be to extract the Iceweasel package and then draw similarities from that.
Currently my system runs on two disks, sda 30GB and sdc 1GB. sdb is my data disk. I have set the partitions as sda1 /boot, sda2 /(root) and sdc1 /(swap).
Thinking that sdc was udma33 i used the disk for a swap area. Later i found out that it is pio4 and i want to relocate my swap area to sda.
Using GParted Live i am planning to create a swap partition to sda. Will fixing the entry in fstab be enough to correct this or do i need to do something more?
I could also use some advice on which live debian image i can install in sdc, to use for rescuing purposes. The capacity of the disk is 1080MB.
As a side note, the images i find for usd-hdd are direct download. Are there any torrent files for these?
