I have these installations:
1. Wheezy on SSD (/dev/sdb) in one single partition (50GB)
2. Squeeze on HDD (/de/sda) with /boot, /root and /home.
Both drives are ext4 and they share one single swap partition.
I normally run wheezy on ssd since it is much faster. But, I have to log into my /home in squeeze in order to access my data there.
Is there a way that I can change wheezy to use the /home in the squeeze (second hdd)?
I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.
Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.
View 14 Replies View RelatedRight i did a clean install of Fc15 and used a custom layout with separate /home partition. when it all installed It had created /home in the /root partition. so I then moved the /home directory to the partition I intended, added the relevant fstab entries and re granted permissions etc to the relevant files. All done with a live cd.
the problem is when i rebooted all settings worked as the partitions mounted with all the /home directories and all my user settings are in tact but when i click home in KDE's kick off it tried to open root? So all im wondering is how could i change the default /home back to my user account? as all i seem to find online is how to specify a /home with useradd

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a disk going bad and couldn't boot Lucid, so I used Virtualbox on Win7 to create a temporary Kubuntu machine to work getting data from my failing drive. Because it was a temp setup, I did not enable root login.
I logged into Linux at Virtualbox, plugged in my failing drive, and began working on moving stuff over using Konsole. The failing drive was mounted on /media/linux. At some point, trying to do some experimenting, I did a sudo chmod 0400 /media/linux. All hell broke loose. No commands would work. No access to /bin/mv or /bin/ls.....no ability to change directories. It was as though the chmod had been applied to the entire root folder. I double-checked my command...no spaces between / and media.
I figured Virtualbox had gone screwy, so I shut down the machine and re-booted. Cannot log in - cannot change to /home/<user>.
If this were a real disk partition, I would simply boot the Kubuntu CD and chmod again. But this is on the VM. I had already backed most of my stuff to the VM!
As a precaution to protect my home folder contents when I reninstall ubuntu if need arises I intend to change my home folder location to a mounted ntfs partition in my HDD. How can I do it the GUI way? Like in windows the "My Documents" location can be changed by going to "My Document" properties and entering the new location.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have a desktop PC (running 10.04) connected to the home hub (v2) via ethernet and everything works correctly. I want to change to wireless so I can move the home hub, I've tried several usb wireless adapters and always end up with the same issue. I can associate with the home hub it will hand out an ip address, answer dns queries and allow me to connect to its web setup page but not the internet (ping, web, etc). I also have a htpc (also 10.04) which is able to connect through the wireless correctly plus a laptop running XP.

dl3k is user name and having a folder in /home directory..now I cannot access/open the dl3k folder as a user.
I change the persmission to
# chmod 644 /home (default setting)

I've logged out and logged back in, and I was successful in making it the default directory it logs in to. Still, afterwards I noticed that that when I use the list all commands "ls -l" it shows that root owns it and it also shows that I do not, by default, have read write execute over it, only read execute. I'm using Slackware 13.37* in a Virtual Machine* Another thing, I don't think I added any rights to my user, how do I give it more rights as well? Like, wheel and sudo and all of that stuff. Just did a new netbook install of Lucid. Went through the setup, putting in my usual username etc. But I thought as it's a portable, I'd better select the encrypted home folder option. All went OK.
I have a home network with a NAS and I needed to change the UID to 1004 to match the rest of the network.
That's when it all when wrong. If I do that, I end up with no permissions on the user folder. A bit of a paradox, you can't change UID if logged in, but unless you're logged in, can't access the files.
My attempts to get around it by changing UID's back chowning, changing back etc. have screwed things up completely.
I have managed to open the encrypted folder and chown, but after a reboot it's all back to the original UIDs, but now I can't get in at all.
how to change when running command "adduser" or "useradd" the placement of the users home directory. Have tried editing the /etc/default/useradd file with no results.

I have a mount called on /home for /dev/sda12..I want to mount /dev/sda12 onto /backup..I tried to do this by changing things in the fstab file i.e. i replaced /home with /backup. This change caused boot up problems and I had to change my fstab file back to get going again.

When I installed Lucid and first switched language/locale settings, a window popped up asking me if I wanted to change the name of the Documents, Music, Video etc folders into the new language.
Originally I was worried that this might be some irreversible operation and said no and ticked the don't ask me again box.
It seems though that this is just a cosmetic operation and I'd quite like to use this function now. Does anyone know where I can change the setting to accomplish this?
I am about to do a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to have my /home on a separate ntfs partition so that it can be accessed by windows 7. I know that i can move it after the install but i wold rather not go through all the problems of moving it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have xfce on my machine, running lucid lynx. For some weird reason, I can't change my firefox home page. I've changed it to the same one time and again in preferences, but every time I open firefox, it shows all the files in my home directory, including hidden ones. I uncheck the "show hidden files box", change it again in "preferences", but it still does this. And the home page in "preferences" is set to the right page I want; firefox just won't go there when I start it up. I really don't want my home directory in plain view like that; how do I make firefox recognize my settings?
