I just downloaded and installed Debian 6 netinstiso for testing. Everything is running ok except I cannot check items on software sources screen. This is the errors I get when trying to reload Synaptic Package manager.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to edit the sources list to use Jessie testing.
The usual online generator i use is busted, this is how i imagine it working:

I have a fresh install of jessie and I'm thinking about starting using testing instead. I tried to use the testing installer but it was so buggy I finally gave up and I now have some questions.

- I get that I should change jessie but to what, testing or stretch?
- Is it considered reasonably "safe" to upgrade a system by changing sources.list and then running apt-get update && apt-get upgrade?
By safe I mean something along the lines of that given that I have a fresh install of jessie is there a great chance that the upgrade will break my system?
I have installed and configured Debian testing and it's great.Now, I wanted to know how I can add or install a good spash screen while booting showing progress bar. I know, its always good to know what is happening. I still want to knowhow to do that.On searching, I only found complex howtos that I, of now cannot understand. - I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?
Since doing a "full-upgrade" using the testing repositoriesotice that before an application can display its window, I get a frame with a black background for anything up to a second. I run a PC with 4 cores of 2.4 GH each.What could be the reason for this annoying behaviour?

View 3 Replies View RelatedA few glitches aside, 11.2 has been very good. Today I installed realcrypt. While in yast, I noticed some other items were set to install. I accepted them along with realcrypt. After the install, clicking the -more applications- button (gnome) did not display the menu, just the mouse wait indicator. After a few tries, I decided to restart. Clicking shutdown did not present the normal menu, but instead instantly shutdown. On restart, I noticed 3-ish orphaned inode(?) messages. After boot completes I'm left with a black screen.I'm running 11.2 Gnome raid-1. The raid array appears to be fine. It emails status on boot, and I received those emails (via google) on the my laptop. I can boot to runlevel 1, so the question is, once there where do I look for cause / fix.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am getting some error when i compile cross compile "dbus-1.2.20". error Code: checking for XML_ParserCreate_MM in -lexpat... no configure: error: Could not find expat.h, check config.log for failed attempts so i downloaded te expat library sources i cross compiled. But again i am getting same error. I think i have to add "-lexpat" in LDFLAG. But i dont know how to do that.

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:
- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.
When I start ubuntu, memtest86+ work to testing memery... Nothing else show up.... just blue screen with testing. I can't log in to ubuntu I don't no how to fix that I tried to use live cd to edit grub, but no grub at all. maybe because i do something wrong from this answer: [URL]...

I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but
1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
I tend to stay on for long time. My machine is a Fujitsu T4310 tablet. I have got all tablet features previously working properly when I was on Isadora Mint. After installing LMDE to my surprise basic features of the tablet simply worked out of the box but I'm missing a few important features like multitouch, screen rotate and buttons in tablet mode.
As far as my experience with Isadora, it needed a driver called "fjbtndrv", but I couldn't find it in the repos, moreover, I think it might need some tweeks to get it behaving properly. I found some refferences but it refers to other ubuntu based distros, which I can't use of course.
p.s. prefere a solution other than compiling it myself, it looks scary and has lots of dependencies.
I have an harddisk which is old, since many years >10 years, and I recall I crashed few clusters using windows programs which were old and harddisk stuffs doing. So the pc lives with bad clusters, this pc lives very well since many years.Question, the pc has woody debian, which let us to install and exclude bad sectors during install. Bad clusters was an usual thing in the past, but today not anymore.Unfortunately debian squeeze installer coders had the good idea to remove the " bad cluster checking " before installing debian, during install (cdrom netinst).

When I start a second X session using startx --:1, (as either my normal user or root), it goes straight into and LXDE session (Debian's default, I think). Once LXDE is started, there is no applications menu (only run and logout). How do I get it to show the full application menu that my regular user can see when I log in from GDM3 normally?

I just installed the Debian testing release(with LXDE) from this week. Everything works great except the network card. I know the network card works because Windows and the Parted Magic Live cd recognize it. Also "lspci" seems to list the card, but when I fire "ifconfig -a" it is not listed there.

I am installing Debian Squeeze on an old Socket 370 Celeron, 433MHz with 128MB PC-100 and a 4.3GB HDD, to function as a router, proxy, content filter, firewall, etc etc. Due to this, I looked at my loaded modules list in the stock Squeeze kernel 2.6.32-3-686. I wrote them all down, downloaded the sources, and cut out everything except those modules and their dependencies. No problems here, but I just noticed that I only see 2.6.32 sources in aptitude, not 2.6.32-3.

It works in setting up my bios, and has always worked before, but I cannot choose any items on the installation menu. I found a bug report that seems to be this issue, but it said that this would be fixed when debian moves to the 2.6.32 kernel on the installer.

The code gives me an error: "Oops, try again. Your function fails on count([1],7). It returns 1 when it should return 0."
It should be outputting 3 because 1 occurs 3 times in the list.
I've heard a lot of talk about people running 'Testing' as a rolling release version of Debian. As I have a spare box to play with, I wanted to see what this was like. I've done a minimal install of Squeeze and had a look at /etc/apt/sources.list. As I would expect, the file refers to Squeeze and not 'testing' (I think Woody used to go for stable/ testing etc, but this then got changed). In order to run 'Testing', can I just replace the Squeeze references and do:
