Debian :: WINE Keeps Forgetting Cd/dvd Drive?
Dec 14, 2010
I'm using Wine in Testing. Each time I use the cd/dvd drive I have to point Wine towards the drive via the configuration gui. I don't have this issue in Ubuntu - Wine finds the drive automatically.

Alright, my boss has discovered an odd issue with KDE4.4 on his laptop. He downloaded a Superman wallpaper for desktop 3 (he has four desktops) using the "Get new wallpapers" functionality, and he downloaded one to his Pictures directory inside his home directory and set it as the background for desktop 1. Now if he logs off and back on, everything is fine, but if he reboots both wallpapers are lost. If he goes into the desktop settings, the wallpapers are there and selected, but they won't show up unless he clicks OK again

while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. How it works in Windows.
I have a server designated as F: drive. This server is a linux server. All computers that access this server are windows machines.
In windows, you can make a "Short Cut" that links a Executable program to the F: drive on the server. When you click on this "Short Cut", Windows will "Run" your program in the exact directory the Executable is located.
Thus, if you Make a "Short Cut" called "Customer" on your network F: drive, you can click on that shortcut and "Customer" will run as if you ran it directly off the F: drive, NOT your station drive of C:
Now *MY* scenario what I WANT to do:
I want to copy the above scenario and be able to do the same thing with Linux and WINE.
I have tried to make a "Shortcut" to my Linux laptop, but it fails. I can only "Copy" the program to the laptop. And when I run it on the laptop, it will not run, because it does not recognize the "F:" drive having all the data files, it only recognizes the C: drive of my linux.
When I tried to make a "link", it says something like "LInk not supported by this file".
So, is it possible to make a "shortcut" to a executable file on the network server, so that if you run the shortcut, it will run the program as if it is located on the F: server instead of the linux station? In Windows, it has a field that says "Target", in which the file will be ran in that directory.

I've set up Internet connection sharing, with Internet from wlan0 being shared to eth0 locally. Interface eth0 has the IP 192.168.0.1, since it's the gateway. Problem is, every time eth0 is disconnected, it forgets its IP, and then nothing works until I
Code:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1
again.
Is there a way to permanently set the IP for eth0 to 192.168.0.1 so that it's remembered across disconnects?

My LibreOffice has started to forget "recently opened" documents.
It will remember them for several sessions, then, when I open it, the list is empty. Rinse and repeat.
Rebooting seems to have nothing to do with it.
Sometimes it happens after a reboot. Sometimes it just happens after shutting down and restarting LO without rebooting or logging out. (I seldom logout or shutdown unless forced to by an update or by Pulse Audio fail--current uptime is almost four days.)
I do not consider this a serious problem, but I am curious as to whether anyone else has encountered it.
This has started within the last two weeks, and, so far as I know, there have been no changes to my LibreOffice since I installed the current release several months ago.
LibreOffice 3.3.0, OOO330m19 (Build:6), tag libreoffice-3.3.0.4
Edit: This is on my Dell 1545n with Ubuntu 10.10.

Booted up my laptop with wireless disabled (using the little switch on the laptop). I flipped the switch, network manager showed all the wireless networks, but didn't connect to any. So I picked mine, and it asked for the WPA key. Now normally (if I had booted with wireless enabled) it would connect without asking for the WPA key. So I rebooted again with wireless enabled this time, and same deal. It seems that it's just forgotten the key altogether.
I put in the key and it's all back to normal, but I'd like to know where/how network manager is storing the WPA key, and why it forgot it.

Since I've upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 my computer has started acting strange. First of all, it keeps forgetting my wallpaper. Most of the time, not all of the time. Another problem is that the power-button in the upper right corner does not appear at every boot. It seems to be forgetting other settings as well from time to time.
What I belive might be causing this problem is that I mount my home directory from a server, and a wild guess is that it is somehow a random order of the startup sequence, so that some features are loaded before the mounting is complete.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling wine twice, and I still get the same error when I click "Browse C Drive". I think this may be one of the issues to why I cannot play the game Torchlight.

I've got a mapping app (Memory Map) + 25Gigs of maps on an NTFS drive on this computer. When I try to find maps it throws up the windows dialogs showing me whatever drives wine has configured eg
c: (something that Wine has invented and looks like a windows install)
d: (dvd drive)
z: this is the root of the linux drive
I dont know the linux file system very well I thought NTFS drives would appear under dev or mnt I have to use the gui to mount the NTFS drive each time (grrrr...) though I have installed NTFSConfig after some slight research that I thought would do the job for me a boot time.
Is this an issue with Wine, do I need to search through the Z: path until I find the NTFS file system, do I need to add a line to the mount script etc etc

I have a computer running linux zenwalk that is not connected to the internet. I have put the wine directory on my the computer with a flash drive. Could someone tell me how to make wine available to run on my computer? I don't care if I am installing, compiling, or just moving the wine directories. (The only thing I've ever compiled is java source code).

I am trying to run You Don't Know Jack in wine - appdb says it has Platinum status, so compatibility shouldn't be the issue. My laptop doesn't have an optical disk drive. So, I ripped the disk to an iso image, mounted it with gmount-iso, and tried to open the program.
The program still says the disk is not inserted. I know on previous laptops with optical drives, I could mount an image on /dev/cdrom0 or /dev/sr0 or whatever and it would be recognized. My /dev directory had no cdrom0 directory, so I made one. I mounted the iso there but it still didn't recognize it. I've tried in my home folder, in /cdrom, and in my newly-created /dev/cdrom0 but no luck.

I come from windows!!! For the life of me, I can't find the (Wine) install environment with the Thunar file manager. For some reason, after i installed wine it doesn't have a link that takes me to the C: drive that Thunar used to open so I could access what I installed thats only compatible with windows, such as World Of Warcraft. I'm bound and determined there has got to be another way to find it!

I was wondering. Up till now whenever I installed Linux I've either dual booted with Windows off 1 HDD, or installed straight Linux by itself. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?
I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.

Is there any way other than building the source for 1.1.42 and manually installing it to actually get the latest version on my Debian Testing? How long does it normally take for new versions of Wine to get into the repo's?

I first went to edit the sources.list to add the Wine repository (or something, I'm not sure).
I then got this output trying to add the gpg key.
debian:/home/debian# wget -O - http://www.lamaresh.net/apt/key.gpg | apt-key add
gpg: can't open `': No such file or directory
--2010-11-20 21:54:52-- http://www.lamaresh.net/apt/key.gpg
Resolving www.lamaresh.net... 62.149.140.208

At first it worked, but now it's giving me this and the fact that it won't update isn't doing me any good.

Is there no repository for up to date Debian wine packages? Also about Catalyst: Phoronix dudes are saying the the tearing thing is fixed on Ubuntu's Meerkat with Catalyst 10.10 beta. Can I expect the same on Squeeze or does it require specific XOrg versions to the tearless 2D movie watching and Window moviing?I only use wine for a few games. Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done. The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

I have a problem running a game on a fresh Slackware64 install.
Slack version is 13.37
I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:
Code:
The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.

I have been asked to install Windows 7 on a computer that groans to even run Windows xp properly. As I know, this is like asking for the impossible, I am posting here to have some opinions about the use of Wine in Debian. In particular, I would like to know whether wine makes Debian less secure and more vulnerable to viral, malware, adware, etc infections.
