Ubuntu Multimedia :: Totem Crashes With Segmentation Fault

Yesterday Totem started crashing - the window shows for a second and then dissapears. Reinstalling via synaptic didnt help.Invalid column number 6 added to iter (remember to end your list of columns with a -1)Segmentation fault.I removed all installed gstreamer codecs, and it still crashes, and I now I have no clue why I cant use the app.I`m using a fresh install of Karmik Koala (over my ubuntu 10.04 without a format )

I upgraded my system from 8.04 all the way to 9.10.Right now I'm trying to play a DVD (Pink Floyd Pulse) and Totem Player just crashes on me. I followed the medibuntu rep installation process found here:Code:http://shibuvarkala.blogspot.com/2009/10/how-to-make-ubnutu-10-karmic-koala.htmlThe reps were updated, packages downloaded and installed, but Totem still crashes. Using Ubuntu 9.10 & Pidgin 2.5.5 (upgraded from 2.5.2 while writing this post, but it did not fix the problem)This problem appeared after closing pidgin and trying to run it again i.e. restarting it (I have to restart it at some point after a long runtime, but that is another issue), it fully loads up (at least, it looks like it) and then instantly crashes with segmentation fault message. Judging from the first glance on the log, the crash has something to do with the windows live protocol.Of course, I have tried searching the web and this forum for an answer, but could not find any suitable one. There is one solution I have found, that is: (re)moving the .purple folder, but that "solution" is not really an option.

I've been having a bit of trouble with Nautilus for the past few days; as soon as I log in, Nautilus starts opening "Starting file manager" windows uncontrollably, and I have to 'killall nautilus' to stop it.
If I try and run nautilus from the terminal, I'm merely given the output code...

After installing 11.3 as an update from 11.2 Kaffeine was working but Skype was not. Following various suggestions on this site I eventually got Skype working but now Kaffeine crashes every time I try to start it, this is the message I get:

What it all means in very simple English and what an ignoramus can do to put it right? I should perhaps explain that although I have been using SuSE since version 9 I am totally incapable of understanding terminal work. I have so far managed, to a large extent, by trial and error but it seems that as versions get better it gets more and more difficult to fix problems. The help provided by OpenSUSE is very good but as one gets older it gets more and more difficult to remember instructions so that they can be followed - you need two pc's one being fixed and a working one to provide the instuctions side by side!

When I try to start amarok, I get a splash screen, and then it crashes with a segmentation fault. I have tried removing the amarok rpm's, and reinstalling it, but that didn't work out. I don't get enough information from the backtrace, but I also can't figure out which packages I need to get more debugging information. I have been subscribed to development repositories, so I guess I have some unstable packages on my system, but don't know which ones. I noticed weird behavior with some of the installed applications. It all started with Guake when I wanted to use it. My shortcut key is F4, I hit F4 and nothing showed up. So I run Guake in terminal, everything fine. Then I hit F4 key and after few seconds Guake crashes with message "Segmentation fault". Nothing more, just that. Then I noticed that Audacity does the same, Gdebi too and even Reportbug app does that (I'm not sure about "segmentation fault", but the app crashes). I don't remember doing anything special or installing any app. All I can think of is this message when booting the system

No idea, if there is any connection. Is there anyway, how I can maybe see more behind that "Segmentation fault" error? I am using openSuse 11.0 and have installed Thunderbird 3 (MozillaThunderbird-3.0.0-15.1) from the mozilla/openSUSE_11.0 repository of the build service. Thunderbird does not start, upon invoking it I get an instant crash with /usr/bin/thunderbird: line 130: 12025 Speicherzugriffsfehler $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@" (Speicherzugriffsfehler is the german equivalent of "segmentation fault"). I do believe, that this problem is somehow caused by some failed LDAP access.
I am using an LDAP-based user account which causes the behaviour described. For testing purposes I created a local user account, which could start thunderbird 3 without a problem. Starting and stopping nscd did not work, neither did the removal of .thunderbird and .mozilla. Here are the final lines of an strace dump:

Choqok has been working fine until today. Now, every time I start my computer and boot into openSUSE 11.4 x86-64 Choqok loads asks for the KWallet password which I enter, it then loads, but within seconds it crashes with a signal 11 Segmentation Fault. How do I fix this? It was working the last time my computer was on which was yesterday. I have not changed anything since then.

Wasting too much time with this game the other day, the whole system froze up and I had to do a hard shutdown. Ever since then, the program won't load. No other programs seem to be affected. Tried uninstalling then reinstalling lbreakout2, to no avail.

I have run into this problem that really bugs me now.
I have installed mediatomb on my Ubuntu box, and it has been working fine for a while now.
This morning I installed 'Gnome subtitles', and had to wrestle a bit with is to make i work (gstreamer-stuff).
Now all of a sudden, my good old mediatomb has begun to seg-fault on importing new videos.
I have tried the following:
run ffmpeg -i -> no errors
run ffmpegthumbnail -> no errors
disable all transcoding in config.xml -> no fun
disable thumbnails in config.xml -> no fun
switch to mysql DB - tables are created all right, but still -> no fun

Running programs in X (WindowMaker) as another user.
Until recently (Debian Stretch) I was able to run graphical programs in X as a second user, like so:
- log into X as user1
- run "xhost+"
- run "su - user2"
- run any graphical program (gthumb, konquerer, ...) as user2
Now when I try to run a program as user2, I get

error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
Segmentation fault
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR for user1 points to /run/user/1000 which I believe gets created by pam_systemd when logging into X. However, doing "su - user2" does not create /run/user/1001. Why not? And how do I get on-the-fly user switching working again?
Related to this, /run/user/1001 not being created on user switch has always caused me some grief b/c audio would not work for user2. But I could work around that by piping pulse through a socket. But now graphics are also broken and that I can't seem to work around.

I have discovered that epiphany cannot be launched. When I try, either from the gnome desktop or from a terminal, I get a box which reports that epiphany has terminated unexpectedly, and would I like to recover the last session. I had Skype debian_2.2.0.35-1_amd64 on my Debian 2.6.32-5 amd64 and it was working without any problem. After re-installing my gnome desktop environment, my skype stopped working. I tried to re-install it. I found out it re-installs without any error but it doesn't launch and gives me "segmentation fault" error on terminal. I purged skype, deleted the .skype folder and installed it again with no luck. when I try to re-install skype via software center it says: "Sorry, 'skype' is not available for this type of computer (amd64)." what should I do to have the skype working on my system again?

My totem crashes after several seconds of playing x264 .mkv files. Plays everything else fine (and my HD content better than .vlc so I'm not interested in switching). In terminal, the only output I get is 'Aborted'.

I just have installed Karmic Koala and have a problem running Firefox. I`ve seen that this is quite a common problem, but since I`m a newbie, I have no idea what to do. I have not found any solutions that would solve my problem yet. Every time I try to load a website including flash advertisings, Firefox just quits.

I just made a pretty simple program in geany (GCC with default options)and I ended up with Segmentation fault. program is pretty simple and it performs binary search on an array.I know what segfault is but here I m clue less about why it is happening.and one thing more, the program runs fine in turbo C++ compiler.Same thing happened earlier too when I was making a program which included some simple string manipulation

I did a Yum update last Friday. It was done before 5.6 was released so I still have 5.5 + various updates. Yum is now giving me a segmentation fault when I try to run it. I believe it has to do with an improperly synchronized version of sqlite which was updated and then Yum stopped working. I'm guessing that installing the latest Yum RPM will fix the dependency issues. Will this throw me out of sync with for instance updating to 5.6?

When I install GNU Common Lisp, and run (help), it suggest that as a next step I run (HELP 'CONS). This halts with a segmentation fault.<br>When I attempt to install the CVS version, the installer compains and bails, also with a segmentation fault.<br>If the fault in my hardware, or is it a program bug that should be reported to someone? If hardware, how do I force a full fsck on /dev/sda when I boot up?<br>Instinct tells me the problem is in gcl (GNU Common Lisp, stable or CVS either one), because I'm not seeing problems otherwise.<br>

When I open up epiphany, it prompts me to either recover or don't recover my session.
No matter what the decision, it outputs a segmentation fault. I can load it with a -p switch, as well as loading it as sudo (just to test) so I'm kind of thinking if i can re set the session to default, then I will be able to get around it?
I haven't been able to test this though because I cant find where the config files for epiphany are! It doesn't output anything useful other than segmentation fault. As for openshot, I JUST installed it, and it installed with no errors, but when I try and run it, this is the output

I am unable to successfully start either the XFCE or Gnome desktops, in Gnome the my wallpaper is displayed but that is all. This problem appeared yesterday night after my hard disk filled up, then all Gnome programs began to crash, also "df" failed to terminate. I was able to clear some space from the terminal (around 2 GB).
I was able to run an xterm so I attempted to load the components of Gnome manually from the terminal, to see which were problematic. I found that every application which uses Gnome fails to execute, producing a segmentation fault. A Java crash informed me that a "problematic frame" producing SIGSEGV was libgnomevfs-2.so.0. I ran md5sum on all libraries matching the pattern /usr/lib/*gnome*, the checksums are identical to those on a working Ubuntu installation, so it is unlikely to be corruption of a library.
I have managed to determine that the problem is not in GLib or GTK+ as I wrote a simple (hello world) GTK+ application which executes without problem.Furthermore (due to a lack of Gnome's network manager) I am without a network connection on the problematic computer.

I have been a Windows user for many years but heard lots of good things about Ubuntu and wanted to give it a shot. I have a VMware ESXi 4.1 server so I created a new VM (Ubuntu desktop 32-bit), downloaded the Ubuntu 10.4 32-bit desktop image, mounted it, and started the installation. Everything worked fine and I got a working Ubuntu system. I created a snapshot just in case I need to get back to this position.
I then saw a prompt from Update Manager and decided to update everything it told me to, which is 300 updates. At the end, I was asked to restart and I did. At that point, the system was not willing to start again. Here is what I get (... stands for omitted text):

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)

I have no clue what to do at this point. I tried going back to the snapshot a few times but always ended up in the same state after installing updates. I tried installing VMware tools before the running the update but it didn't make a difference.
