I am experiencing the slow transfer speed from my Lenny to Windows 7. Both of my NIC's are oboard Nvidia nForce 1GBPs. For example 200MB transfer from Win to Lenny (default samba shares) takes about a minute, while the other way around takes an hour!!!. I get similar transfer behavior through sFTP.
Can somebody clarify if the problem is in NIC drivers, MTU (I can't set it up higher than 1500), or smb.conf settings
When i try to copy files from my samba server (Ubuntu 9.10) to my windows seven media center, the speed is extremely slow. So slow that is better to download 100mb file from the internet, than from my lan. And on my lan, every card and switch is at 1000 mbps speeds on cat5 cables. And from XP or other linux machine
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem with data transfers between systems. I have a file server + my desktop. Both are running Debian 8.3. I have a samba share running on the file server and I mount the shares on my desktop on boot via /etc/fstab
When I copy a file using the nautilus from my home folder (on my HDD) on my desktop to the mounted network location, my transfers start out at gigabit speeds 80MB/s-90MB/s for a couple seconds and then drop down to about 8MB/s
But when I terminate the transfer and then use scp to transfer the same file, I get consistent gigabit speed throughout the transfer. I am not sure what is going on.
I currently have debian installed dual booting with windows 7. Whenever I go to speedtest.net I ger over 20mbs with windows 7 and .098mbs with debian and ubuntu can wnyone tell me what is going on. I called AT&T Uverse and they said that I had over 900 file sharing sessions still open and that is what was causing the problem so they reset my network gateway for me ad we tried again, same thing debian low ethernet speed windows 7 very high ethernet speed can anyone help me out with this

The issue is one of my users(nv) cannot login to her folder in Linux using his windows credentials(the password keep prompt).But If I'm using my windows password she can access to her linux folder.But it is a temporary solution as when she restart the pc,the password authentication will prompt again.

View 10 Replies View RelatedSo what kind of speed are you getting with Samba over your local network? What speeds should I be seeing? I'm currently transferring a large amount of files from one computer to another. I'm taking everything off of a desktop drive on computer A and putting it on an IDE disk on computer B. Transfers are running at around 600-700 KB/Sec. I've seen moments, mostly when the transfer starts, where speeds were at 1000KB/Sec, but that lasts a very short while and then starts to "degrade" until it reaches 600+ KB/Sec. It then seems to level off there. Is this acceptable? Is this all I can expect to get out of a 10/100 home network? The current transfer is 2.5GB. Looks like it will take 1 hour+ to complete. Transferred 12GB last night. Was looking at 4-5 hours to complete so I left it running while I was sleeping. Personally, I think this is slow. I think it could be exponentially faster.
While I'm running these transfers I'm looking at some documentation on Samba speed tweaks. I've been adding little tidbits here and there to both smb.conf files. Some of it seems to help. Sometimes there is a noticeable difference in speed. Sometimes the changes actually cause degradation in speed. If you have a speed tweak that you would like to share the information will be gratefully accepted. Samba gurus welcome to reply. How do you set up Samba in an office environment? How do you set Samba up in an environment where performance is critical?
Maybe I should forget about Samba and try using a different transfer protocol? Am I expecting too much from Samba?I should stop before I really start to ramble. Anyhow, networking beats the heck out of the sneakernet, at any speed!As a side note, or maybe quite importantly, there is a router and a network switch (not a hub) involved here. Maybe something to consider?
(this is a repost of the same thread in the networking/wireless forum, I think it's better suited here but couldn't see a way to move it) I have a Proliant Microserver, I have Ubuntu Server 10.10 installed onto to a USB stick (the server has an internal USB port). The storage drives are Samsung SpinPoint F1s. The server is plugged into a gbE switch, there is a link from that to a 200mbps powerline link, from there it goes to a 100mbps switch and then to my machine I was testing from.
I realise that a powerline link can often slow things up, but I use the same link for my Internet connection which will happily pull files down at around 4.3mb/s.. so I know the link isn't the bottleneck. If i copy anything via any of the samba shares then it transfers at around 1.5mb/s. This speed does not change if I try plugging the client into the same gbE switch as the server. Similar spees are shown if i transfer it over http via apache2 as well. Client machines are laptop running ubuntu and a win7 desktop. Speeds are the same copying to both of them. I have applied tweaks to samba as described here;

I had a F14 samba server working flawlessly now for a quite time. Unexpectedly about a month ago the write speed slowed down around 64kbit/s and that's really slow. I haven't changed any configs, only updated the server. I've troubleshooted this from many angles:
-It is not a network issue because sftp writes are good.
-It is not a RAID1 issue because write speed from another directory (locally) are good.
So basically samba is the only thing left.

I have very slow write speed when copying file from Windows clients to Samba Share. Samba speed is slower than Windows native clients connections ?
I have just upgraded to Jessie and everything seems to be OK apart from printing from a windows machine to my print share. This was working previously under wheezy. I can print a test page from Cups without any problems, but when I try and print from windows, Samba seems to crash completely and is constantly writing these messages to the logs. Then I lose access to the other shares, presumably while it repeatedly crashes.

I have Samba share setup on my Laptop running Lucid Lynx, for my home network,wireless The copy speed for my movies, when I access them from Windows laptop is too pathetic. Took 22 min to copy around ~1.6GB of data, giving me a speed of only 1.2 MB/s

I have set up a file server (Ubuntu Server Edition) for our lab. People can connect to common Samba file shares from their personal laptops/desktops, which run either Windows Vista or Mac OSX. The guys with OSX have upload/download speeds of ~2 MB/s, while the Vista machines are slogging away at ~200kb/s for downloads and ~400kb/s for uploads. In both cases, the connection are through wired ethernet ports which should function identically. Since the Macs work fine on the same network, I assume this is a Vista issue.
I have tried troubleshooting one of the Vista machines by:
1. Turning off the Remove Differential Compression feature
2. Disabling autotuning following these instructions
3. Adding a registry key following the same link above.
But nothing has improved. Anybody have any advice on addition tweaks to the Vista machine? Is there a chance that this is actually a server-side/samba issue?

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
Since I use my computer for some intense processor calculations, without any fancy graphical needs, I decided to apply a mild OC on the BIOS settings, to speed thing a bit up.I own an AMD Phenom II 1055T (2.8GHz) cpu. I changed the base freq from 200 to 203, and changed the multipliers of the standard and boost freqs to x15 and x16.5, so now the BIOS reads 3045 MHz and 3349 MHz for both speeds.

From the Linux box I can access one of the Windows 7 boxes but the other won't accept my user name and password. The one that won't accept has Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant installed. Apparantly that's an automatic install now.
I've read that there is a bug with the SAMBA libsmbclient [URL].
I tried updating via YAST but still end up with version 3.5.4-5.1.2 and this doesn't work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:
- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer
In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........
I need to test network card throughput and speed between two computers, one is running Fedora and other running Windows 7. Usually I would use netperf to perform this task, however I can't find Windows build of netperf. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

i both have the same problem, i'm trying to burn my images at 4 or 8 speed, but ubuntu 10.04 says that the hardware does not support that kind of speed and switch up to 16 speed and more. i know it can burn at low speeds, at least in windows, it is a bit strange that fast burning is okee, and slow not, what can i do to prevent this? i don't wanna burn to much errors on my discs

My transfer speeds max ut at 2MB/s wich is painfully slow when moving large files such as movies. Worker FM transfers the same files to the same drive much MUCH faster (not sure by how much, though). This leads me to the conclusion that the problem lies with MC.
