Debian :: Possible To Change The Permission To Previous State
Aug 3, 2015
I have accidentally changed the permission of "/usr/bin" directory and its files by the command on my Debian/testing system:
Code: Select all$chmod 775 /usr/bin -R
First, there was a problem with sudo but I fixed it. Now I am suspicious that some programs may not run because of changing their setuid or setgid. I have posted this question here and found out that there is no easy way to restore their setuid or setgid for Debian systems. For RPM based distributions, it is fairly easy. I would like to add a few questions:
Is it possible to write a script which stores all directories and files default permissions like RPM based distributions? And it restores its previous state. I suspect that some programs may not run from my user account (I only use the computer myself.) If I run the programs from my root account, will the programs run without problem?

I need to configure software as debian image to work on server. I need to create user who is not root, but being able to change IP (I don't know if administrators who will install my image need to give static IP to it, so I want to create special user role for them being able to change IP but not able to see some restricted folders in the image).

I'm running a dual boot system with winXP and Debian Lenny. Here's my hard drive set up
hda1 - windows ntfs (just for use with windows)
hda2 - / ext3
hda3 - swap
hda4 - /home ext3
hda5 - /windows fat32 (shared partition between linux and windows)
Now, I have access to /windows but it's owned by root so I can't create/modify anything and I can't unmount it to use chown.

I installed Debian Kit on my Asus Nexus 7 tablet, and after following the installation tutorial I got it running except for I'm stuck on the step to create a new user. (btw link: [URL] .... )
Here's how it went (I can't copy&paste from my tablet so I have to type out everything...):
Code: Select allroot@android-6c40984c21c156ae:/# adduser paul374
Adding user `paul374' ...
Adding new group `paul374' (5000) ...
Adding new user `paul374' (5000) with group `paul374' ...
Creating home directory `/home/paul374' ...
[Code] ....
So since I read somewhere that selinux had some permission problem, so I did a few chcons:
Code: Select allchcon --user=u --role=r --type=init --range=s0 /etc/passwd
chcon --user=u --role=r --type=init --range=s0 /etc/shadow
chcon --user=u --role=r --type=init --range=s0 /etc/gshadow
And it did take effect:
Code: Select allroot@android-6c40984c21c156ae:/# ls -Z | grep passwd
u:r:init:s0 passwd
u:object_r:unlabeled:s0 passwd-
root@android-6c40984c21c156ae:/# ls -Z | grep shadow
u:r:init:s0 gshadow
u:object_r:unlabeled:s0 gshadow-
u:r:init:s0 shadow
u:object_r:unlabeled:s0 shadow-
...but still same thing as what happened in the beginning...
Anyway my goal is to create and be able to log in to another user so that I'm not stuck running root all the time. (Which, as we all know, is a bad idea.)
If there's a way to manually create the user by editing a few files, and root still won't be able to change passwords, I'm fine with that, as long as I have another user. Whatever it takes to just get a non-root user log-in-able...
I forgot to mention that since this is the Asus Nexus 7, there is no removable media, so chrooting from another Linux machine isn't an option, and neither is removing an SD card to use a LiveCD on it.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer, I asked a couple months ago here if my PC would run it and it does well, but I believe that not as well as I want to, mainly because of my computer. Right now I have the following:
RAM: 433 MB
AMD Sempron, 1800 MHz 3000+
HD 120 Gb
So I believe that maybe if I change my Ubuntu version to, lets say, 9.10 it will work a little better, because right now the PC have a lot of lag and some other troubles when working with PDF and the GIMP, etc. and I think its mainly because of the low memory. So, what do you think? Should I change my PC to 9.10 or some other previous version of Ubuntu?

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

I want to install (or compile myself) a previous kernel release (2.6.31.13). Where can I get it?
I mean a Debian Kernel with all your patches etc.
I'm using Debian Unstable. I just noticed that it was the quickest kernel (well, maybe for me only and my hardware).

[Code]...
this makes me worry some things didn't install all the way, because if i did aptitude install xfce4-power-manager it would install it and leave make the current state 'i'.is there anyway to install all the packages labeled 'pi'?

If I should have put this in the beginners forum, I'm new to Debian but not to linux having used Slackware for some years. My problem is a kernal thing I think so probably best posted here.
I'm trying Debian because of the belief that I can use the Edinburgh Speech Software easier for my project work, also I wanted to use xen if possible. Having installed Debian Lenny amd64, the sound wasn't working on the machine but after installing the bpo the sound worked. The next thing to do was to try to install xen. Following an install of xen, the sound no longer works in the xen image, though I can still boot into the bpo kernel and get sound alright. When I boot into any kernel now I get a kernel failure problem just after I have logged in (Your system had a kernel failure),, though I can still go on with things - this happens whichever kernel I try to use. However the kernel which is last in the list I have pasted below (Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-1-xen-amd64), will not run at all and complains so:
Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format
On boot with all kernels I also get the message: Failed to read splash image ((hd0,0)//grub/splash.xpm.gz), which I didn't get before the xen installation. Something I thought to try was to install lenny again, then install the xen parts and then after this install thb bpo upgrade, but I am thinking this will not particularly work - if I did this and ended up with a working bpo kernel/boot, would this boot option include the xen functionality or not?
[Code]...

I have 3 images made by clonezilla now I want to restore 1 of them, but when I try to use clonezilla to restore, there's no option to restore image. I can see the images in home directory and file is owned by root in my home directory. I'm trying to transfer image to usb hdd.
Did I place image in wrong directory or is it permissions problem.

I had been doing some removal of packages, and things went well, or so I thought. Now whenever I try and install any package using aptitude, some old state is lingering around and wants me to install packages that I do not want, and remove some packages that I am not sure about removing (did I actually select those to be removed??) I removed libvirt etc, and now it wants to come back? Also, like I mentioned, why remove those other four packages?
The following NEW packages will be installed:
aqemu gtkrsync libvirt-doc libvirt0 python-libvirt qemu qemu-kvm qemu-system qemu-user qemu-utils virt-top virt-viewer virtinst
The following packages will be removed:
dnsmasq-base{u} netcat-openbsd{u} python-gtk-vnc{u} python-vte{u}
0 packages upgraded, 13 newly installed, 4 to remove and 176 not upgraded.
Need to get 2,210kB/24.3MB of archives. After unpacking 72.7MB will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?] ^C
Running squeeze, and enjoying it so far, apart from a broken out of the box synergy (compiled my own synergy-plus to fix that issue) and a buggy samba client.

The first symptom is with de Gnome Power Manager, only show me when I disconnect de AC power, but when connect it again the Power Manager icon disappear and the energy battery stay in the same value.
After search for a while, all the post I read talking about the /proc/acpi/battery directory, but this directory not exist on my laptop.
I have a laptop Lenovo G460. My OS is Squeeze. My Kernel is 2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64, because the 2.6.32 version of the kernel don't recognize well my audio card.
I can't attach the dmesg and the lsmod output because I receive a message "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.", both file are compressed.

I have a problem with nautilus thumbnails since a few days. I checked they are indeed generated in .thumbnails, but all I got in nautilus is the "loading.." icon instead of the thumbnail, for all kind of files (pdf, image, video..) + a high cpu load.
I really don't see what to look at here, didn't found any trace of error in several logs/debug tool like gdb (and btw does nautilus have log abilities?)
I don't know which change could have triggered this (it used to work fine), maybe adding the i386 compatibilty with "dpkg --add-architecture i386" ? (I did this a few days ago in order to install acrobat reader)
Also I've been copying all of the home folder files from my previous ubuntu account to the new debian one, maybe I broke something in the process ?
hint0: thumbnails are displayed fine under thunar
Solved due to this post: [URL] ....
I just did:
Code: Select allln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails
and my thumbnails are back

A rather new user here, was messing with the preferences on a user folder of mine on Karmic, looking for a way to make the folder invisible to users (like the old windows option). Set it to 'none', then closed it, returned to the directory finding the folder with a box with an 'x' on it.
Went to open it, it says 'access denied'. So I think 'okay, how do I undo that', go back to see if I can restore it back to 'read & write' with no sucess.
Seached the forums for a solution to this issue, most of solutions revolve around 'gksudo nautilus' which I attempted to open via command-line. Nothing seemed pop open after I entered my password in responce to entering said command-line, probably because I really don't know how to use Nautilus.

I am getting annoyed that every time I try to extract, move, or delete a folder I get:
"Unable to move due to file permission"
"Unable to delete due to file permission"
"Unable to extract due to file permission"
I really have a hard time trying to use, and understand the chmod folder stuff in terminal. So I asked a friend and he helped me create a desktop program or icon where I would just drop the folder I wanted to use on it, and permission wouldn't be needed anymore.
Well, I dropped a a folder on it one day and the folder didn't open, so I tried another folder and eventually the thing never worked again so I removed it.
Is it possible to allow the entire hard drive or OS (Ubuntu 9.10) to give me permission to all the folders? I only installed the [password to log] in thing, so I wouldn't have to worry about people in my house using my computer without consent. If this isn't possible can someone post a method to create the launcher or icon?
Note: I made a root desktop thing (Guy holding what looks to be an ID card) but not even that will allow me to delete the folder in the file system. I the entire game that the folder is called is removed already, so there is no point me leaving this folder alone.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.4 on an Intel machine. The machine also has Windows 7. So some of the partitions of the hard drive are Windows compatible (NTFS). They are all mounted when system is booted with Ubuntu and all files are accessible. However, when I try to change permission or limit access to a group, CHMOD command does not work. It doesn't return any error and everything seems to work fine but I can't change any permission.

I've installed slax6 onto an ext3 partition and setup a users account, i've also just managed to mount some virtualbox shared folders which are working and i can access them fine. The problem is I cannot seem to give limited user accounts access to them. root can access them no problem! but right clicking and changing the permissions do nothing, because once I click apply, reopen the menu, the changes have reverted. I've tried chmod'ing them.. chmod o=rwx /mnt/folder I used 'o' because I can't seem to change the group permission for the folder. The shared folder I am mounting is formatted in NTFS and the other in ext3, I can't change the permissions of either.

I have openSuSE 11.2, and just recently I've installed Apache 2.2 on it. I installed php, rewrite and ftp modules - all was OK. I made two accounts which are able to login on the FTP, and should have full access - I made the htdocs (the folder accessible from FTP) have permissions - root and root group should have both read, write and delete permissions. However, when I right clicked the folder >properties > permissions - it said "Folders: Read and write" (or something like that), but "Files: ---"... Always when I wanted to change that, in GUI or terminal - it did the same, it either changed back to --- immediately, or it stayed like that... until I closed the window. When I reopened it, it was the SAME...
I double-checked - Apache was stopped at the moment. I tried to change the permissions of the enclosing folder - still did the same. I do not really understand the Linux filesystem structure yet, but from what I read on internet, I saw that most used install prefix is /usr/local/apache - I installed it there as well. So, I though I shall put the htdocs folder somewhere else - I made a new folder in /var/ called server. But the properties of that folder did the same thing! I.e. it changed back just when I changed it to something else. How can I REALLY change these permissions so they won't change back in a second?
