The issue i found is that when i connect from ubuntu to windows 2003 server, through rdesktop, using the numeric keypad disables automatically the caps lock setting. To reproduce the problem :
- connect to a windows remote pc through rdesktop
- open notepad
- press caps lock to set the capital letters
[code]....
The result is :
ADKLEFL2390309ajkejkjf
The caps lock has been silently deactivated. Only ubuntu clients are affected by this. I think it's a bug of rdesktop.

I've noticed a bit of a problem here in the last few days...after some point, my numeric keypad stops being a numeric keypad; instead, it controls the mouse (5 right clicks, and the outer keys move the cursor in the appropriate direction). It doesn't appear to happen on boot, as I generally type the numeric bits of my password with the keypad, but some point after. The only common events I can think of where this has occurred is either after connecting to the system via SSH, or after swapping to tty1 (which usually requires re-enabling of numberlock for the terminal to recognize digits, again for the password). No matter what state the NumLock is in (off or on) at this point, the keypad fails to function as a keypad.

I have a keypad with a numeric part to it (as well as the traditional numbers above the alpha keys)It stopped working after I installed Moonlight - and although I have uninstalled Moonlight it is still not working (I may be wrong that Moonlight was the problem, but I can't think of anything else)The number lock indicator still lights up, but there is no response to any numeric input. With the number lock key off, the alternative actions (cursor up, down, etc) work normally.

You will not believe that. Such crazzy thing! When I first press the Shift key (in KDE session), the Numbers Lock function (LED) turn off. Then I have to press NumLock key twice to turn it on. First press has no effect. Second turn it on.
And another strange thing. I can disable this strange efect, if I manually turn NumLock off an then on.
I thing, I will rename Fedora to Pandora. Because there is more that little strange things. About 12 I counted. But there is no time and place to write all 12. Maybe another day.

Just upgraded to Jessie from Wheezy. The process went smoothly.
I've noticed the lock screen is inescapable. The "Unlock" button does nothing, the keyboard is completely disabled, and all I have is a clock to stare at for all of eternity until I force a reboot. It doesn't hang or freeze, I'm just unable to get out of the lock screen. I've tried configuring the widgets and stuff in the System Settings, but I can't make it usable.
It was working perfectly in Wheezy, and is a pretty important feature that I use all the time when other people are around and I need to leave my station.

For a good while I used the following code to swap caps lock and escape, which is very beneficial to me as I have vim-like keybindings in most of the apps that I use:remove Lock = Caps_Lock
add Lock = Escape
keysym Caps_Lock = Escape
keysym Escape = Caps_Lock
followed by xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap, which I got from http://vim.wikia.com
/wiki/Map_caps_lock_to_escape_in_XWindows. However, after a recent Debian upgrade with aptitude, this stopped working - or, it does work poorly, in that caps lock toggles caps lock and acts as escape, so I have to press it twice all the time. Is there a better way to do this with X, since my solution stopped working?

I have set up minimal debian installation with pekwm, tint2, xscreensaver and friends. When I press Fn+F4 on my thinkpad or run pm-suspend from root terminal, it suspends just fine (yay), but when I resume, I get instantly logged in into my account. What I'd like to have, is that xscreensaver locks my session after suspend, so that I have to type in my password in order to continiue working.
PS. In /etc/default/acpi-support I have LOCK_SCREEN=true

I am running Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment.
I was unhappy with the lock screen on Xfce so I removed xscreensaver and wrote a short custom locking script, which basically involves using i3lock along with some additional commands to make things pretty. I was able to change the default locking behaviour by modifying /usr/bin/xflock4 to run my_lock.sh.
Unfortunately, no lock screen appears whenever I suspend ie after waking the computer from suspension I don't need to type a password in. I would like to force Xfce to lock the screen with my_lock.sh before actually suspending, but I don't know how to do this.
I know that Xfce runs Code: Select allxfce4-session-logout -s when suspending, but xfce4-session-logout is a binary file which I cannot edit.

I'm randomly getting 'Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery...' or something like that at boot ((it flashes very quickly)- If I don't press anything, I'm prompted for my password (I configured it to login with password) and the desktop loads...
I'm using Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 -> Ultimate Edition Home
I was using my 1TB hdd to dual-boot linux, windows, and for storage...Yesterday, I imaged the linux partition, and restored it to an approximately 66GB partition I created on a 150GB hdd...Besides the 66GB partition, the rest of the 150GB hdd is 'unallocated space'... That's when the above message started...Below are screenshots of the fstab and partitions as they are now...

When I was using AntiX, I liked how I could just type "xlock" in a terminal and it would lock the screen until I came back and typed my password. I saw that there was no "xlock" package, so googling around, I saw it was replaced with xlockmore and xlockmore-gl, neither of which there seems to be a package for in the Squeeze repositories. I tried xscreensaver, but I prefer the simplicity of xlock (and I like that it doesn't leave a daemon runnig when not in use). Is there a way to safely install it, or should I just be looking for an alternative?

I've one lenovo 3000 g430 4152 laptop on which i have windows but previously installed debian 5.03 and for enabling the wireless i've to download broadcom b43legacy and install it by compiling because the backports kernel doesn't work with lenovo and after installing debian accidently switched of the wireless by the slide button on laptop
but on next boot i was not able to enable the wireless either by the slide button or fn+f5 which is the key for enabling it the wireless then on some forum i got advise that i can only re-enable by installing windows because lenovo drivers are available for only windows for this model... my question is that is there any solution for it in debian and also there is one more problem that i've to press fn+f8 twice on each boot for enabling the touchpad...

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls

I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

He just installed KUbuntu 10.10 (multiboot with Vista).. When he reboots his laptop from Linux, he directly has a black screen (in spite of the "Press F2 for setup" screen and the GRUB menu). So the problem is before GRUB start. The first thing displayed in fact is the login screen. He doesn't have this problem when he reboots from Windows. The "Press F2 for setup" screen and the GRUB menu are normally displayed. It's only when he reboots from Kubuntu. I precise that it's only a display problem because even if the GRUB menu is not displayed I can still navigate with arrow keys and start Linux or Windows by pressing Enter (because I know Linux is at the top of GRUB menu, and Windows at the bottom). Do you have an idea of what could occure with Linux to disable display at boot?
