Debian Multimedia :: Using Basic Functions Freezes Nautilus And Desktop

Jul 10, 2015

By pressing 'properties' on a folder it freezes and I have to do killall nautilus && nautilus to get it working again. I have found no fix when googling (saying some packages that isn't installed is the problem).

It just takes a really long time to load based on the CPU usage.

Ubuntu :: Any Options Within Banshee To Remove All But The Most Basic Functions?

Jul 20, 2011

1. I was wondering if there were certain terms for the various areas on the desktop. I'm using the classic layout in Ubuntu (I read many say they liked Gnome better than Unity, and classic is closer to Gnome). Are there terms to describe the following areas in Ubuntu?:A. The first area has Applications, Places, and System menus. This seems most comparable to the Windows start menu.B. The panel at the bottom of the desktop shows which applications or files are running. It looks like the task bar.C. There's an area of one panel that allows you to shutdown, restart, etc. It also has networking options, sound options, time settings, and other things. This makes me think of the system tray. I think this area may also have a notification area, but I haven't noticed any notifications.

2. Are there any options within Banshee to remove all but the most basic functions? Media Player in Windows had an option to go into some compact or skin mode where it took up very little space. I noticed some sort of Banshee player within the sound controls in the (system tray). Something similar to this would be ideal. I'd like to be able to just select a bunch of songs in a folder and play them all in this condensed version of the audio player.3. This has to do with the auto hide feature of the panels when they are located on the left and right side of the desktop. It seems as though the panels will only reappear when my cursor hits the very top of the screen on the corresponding side. So if a panel was set to auto hide on the left side of the desktop, it would only reappear when the cursor was in the top-left-most part of the screen. Is there a way to make it appear when my cursor touches any part of the left edge?4. I noticed that I was able to access some files and folders on my Windows partition while in Ubuntu.

A. Can modifying files on the Windows partition have some unwanted consequences?B. If I made another Linux-based partition, would my current Ubuntu partition be able to access files in the new partition in the same way? Would this require root privileges for every action?5. I've read that modifying the Windows partition from Ubuntu with something like Gparted could have negative effects on Windows' ability to boot properly. Are there similar dangers when modifying the Ubuntu partitions from Windows? My HDD is currently partitioned like: Win7 400GB, Ubuntu 100GB.I'm thinking about setting it up like: Win7 350GB, Ubuntu 100GB, unallocated 50GB.

If modifying the Ubuntu partitions from Windows can have negative effects, how should I go about setting this up?6. Is there a way to set the size the icons on the desktop without having to resize each one individually.7. How difficult is it to set up a customized theme? I haven't found a theme for the controls that I've liked yet. I've seen a couple that were pretty decent, but usually one thing would ruin the theme for me. This made me wonder about making my own.8. I believe the media player in use right now is Totem. Like with Banshee, is there a way to have most of the controls of this application hidden or made less noticeable? I tend to favor a minimalist approach when customizing things, so being able to reduce the number of things showing or being able to hide them when I want is always a plus. Maybe someone could suggest an alternate media player that works well to accomplish this. If another player could be paused when the video is clicked, that'd be a small plus.

9. When setting the folder permissions (read, write, execute), do these overwrite the individual file permissions within the folder? I believe I read that this applies to other folders within the folder. Or do the folder and file permissions not interact with one-another?10. My understanding of folder permissions is that none will work without the execute permission being enabled. Why is this? I read of the followingconfigurations(r:read, w:write, x:execute): r-x for read only, rwx for read and write, --- to deny access. The tutorial I read this from advised against otherconfigurations. What would happen if you allowed read and write permissions but disabled execute permissions for folders? What happens if only execute permissions are granted?11. I have the display set to dim when idle. What does it mean to be "idle"? The amount of time it takes for the screen to dim seems vary randomly.

12. This chunk of questions relates to Linux and its uses with various companies.A. Why do companies that use Linux machines heavily use these Linux machines? Is it just an open source, money-saving matter?B. For a person whose responsibilities are to maintain and run things on these machines, what might his or her responsibilities include?C. What sort of skills should this person have? What other technologies are often used in conjunction with Linux machines to accomplish some of the companies' goals?D. I'd imagine that with servers or whatever other things are running on these machines, the companies wouldn't want excess software or system files to be taking up resources. This leads me to think that thesemachines would have to be handled without GUIs and such. Would one be able to simulate the limitations of these machines in Ubuntu? Is it as simple as limiting one's self to the terminal to do everything? Are there things Linux can do on its own that Ubuntu cannot do?

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy 7.8 With LXDE Desktop - Task Bar Volume Control No Longer Functions

Feb 11, 2015

Running Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.

I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.

Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

* more or less solved. still not exactly what I want but it works, mostly.

Debian Multimedia :: Basic Networking - Referring To Computers By Name

May 16, 2011

Sorry if this is a dumb question, there's a lot about networking that I don't get yet. I've got two computers using the same wireless router. They both get their IP addresses via DHCP from the router (I assume). If I want to connect from one machine to another, I can use the IP address (which works), but it's a pain checking what the IP address is, I guess it depends on which one connects first? So it might work today but tomorrow the IP addresses are reversed and the same command wouldn't work.

What I'd like to do is just refer to the other computer by name, but of course I haven't got a DNS server just for these two computers, and I don't think the router can do it (can it?) so is there a way to do it? Is it really just a case of switching off DHCP and giving each computer a fixed and unique IP address, and then entering some name in the hosts file for the two computers? Although then there's nothing to guarantee that the name in the hosts file actually matches the hostname of the computer at that IP I suppose.

Debian Multimedia :: Lower Level Way To Change Basic X Cursor?

May 9, 2010

I have a minimal debian install, with not much more than enough to run scrotwm, I want to change the basic arrow cursor to a png I have. Is there a simpler lower level way of achieving this without having to install and modify an existing cursor theme. I installed x11-apps just to get xcursorgen... though idk if this has been an essential step or not. Anyway, I have run it on my arrow.png/arrow.cursor to create a "default" cursor file... though am lost as to where to go from there. I have no idea where the existing default cursor is located, though i suspect it's a font cursor not a icon cursor...

Debian :: Desktop Freezes Randomly Two Times

Feb 17, 2010

I have used debian in the past and I am pretty comfortable with it but I have been having an issue. My desktop has randomly frozen two times. All my applications are still running though. For example, I was still able to talk on skype with my friend. However, all I can do is move my mouse but I can not click on anything forcing me to restart. Here are some things that might be helpful:

-I was using compiz both times (I am assuming this might be why. however, I have used compiz on ubuntu and I have never had a problem)
-I use an ATI graphics card
-It froze the first time when I accidently tried to extract the skype install deb.
-It froze the second time when I pressed close in software sources
-Since I have installed debian, I have installed compiz, compiz effect packages, removed openoffice, installed opera, installed google chrome, installed flash, and installed skype.

Does anyone know why my desktop crashed?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Open Audio CD With Rhythmbox When Left Clicking On Desktop Icon - Instead Of Nautilus

Mar 31, 2011

When I have an Audio CD inside my computer in the desktop there is an icon called "Sound disk". When I left click on it Nautilus opens. I would like Rhythmbox to open instead.

I've tried to change in /etc/gnome/defaults.list :

But the problem is still here.

NB: I only need to click once on the icons of the files to open them (I changed the preference of Nautilus).
NB2: I have no problem with "Open with" in the context menu when right clicking.
NB3: I have no problem when I insert an Audio CD: Rhythmbox opens automatically because I selected that option.

My desktop sometimes freezes and does not respond to keyboard or mouse. I initially thought the CPU was overheating but it froze tonight when my CPU temperature was 32C and it has been up to 50C without freezing. I am beginning to think it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue but do not know. I looked at the pm-powersave.log and user.log but did not see anything suspicious.

Debian Multimedia :: Changing Mimetypes In Nautilus?

Feb 9, 2010

I'm a user of Kicad, a schematic/printed circuit design suite. Kicad uses the extension '.mod' for its component module library files. When I view these files in Nautilus, (or one of my other file managers), they are displayed with a music note, and the file type is shown as 'Amiga SoundTracker audio'. I've never had such a file on any of my computers, and I'm fairly certain I never will. However, I have lots of Kicad module files on several computers. How can I make Nautilus report the correct filetype, or at least report an unknown filetype so my PCB libraries don't look like music files?

Here's what I've tried so far. I searched my whole system for files containing the string 'Amiga SoundTracker'. The only files that came up were three XML files: freedesktop.org.xml, mime.xml, and x-mod.xml.In each of these files I found one line that referred to both the extension '.mod' and the phrase 'Amiga AoundTracker'. (Also, in each case the line of code was the only one in its file that referred to the extension '.mod'). I commented out only this line in each of the three files, saved, and re-booted. After re-boot I confirmed that my changes to the files had persisted, yet my file managers still report my library files as 'Amiga SoundTracker'.Can I correct these filetypes, or am I out of luck?

Debian Multimedia :: Nautilus - Thumbnails Blocked On Loading State

May 11, 2013

I have a problem with nautilus thumbnails since a few days. I checked they are indeed generated in .thumbnails, but all I got in nautilus is the "loading.." icon instead of the thumbnail, for all kind of files (pdf, image, video..) + a high cpu load.

I really don't see what to look at here, didn't found any trace of error in several logs/debug tool like gdb (and btw does nautilus have log abilities?)

I don't know which change could have triggered this (it used to work fine), maybe adding the i386 compatibilty with "dpkg --add-architecture i386" ? (I did this a few days ago in order to install acrobat reader)

Also I've been copying all of the home folder files from my previous ubuntu account to the new debian one, maybe I broke something in the process ?

hint0: thumbnails are displayed fine under thunar

Solved due to this post: [URL] ....

I just did:

Code: Select allln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails

and my thumbnails are back

Debian Multimedia :: System Freezes - Something To Do With Wireless

May 4, 2011

I've got a problem since I changed from wired to wireless. It doesn't happen repeatably, but usually when more than one application is trying to use the internet connection at the same time (eg iceweasel, icedove, java programs etc). Suddenly, all internet connectivity is lost, and the applications start to hang. Then I can try to close them but they don't close properly and still appear in the ps list. I can pull out the USB dongle (TP-Link TL-WN821N) but nothing responds any more, I can't disconnect using the taskbar icon, and when I try to kill -9 the iceweasel or icedove or java processes, even as root it does nothing.

Eventually the only thing I can think to do is to shut down. Except, when I try to shut down it says it can't stop the avahi daemon, and draws a little tree of the things which are hanging off the avahi daemon (like the apps trying to use the network), and says it can't stop them either. Then it tries to unmount the drives but fails to do that too, and doesn't umount either / or /home. Now the login prompts don't respond any more either (although I can still cycle through non-responsive tty screens), and the only thing left is to hold the finger on the power button.
