Running Debian 8, thunar 1.6.3. Randomly thunar stops redrawing and stops responding to mouse and keyboard input.
This is annoying because I usually have a handful of tabs open and I "lose my place."
Routinely, while I'm working on my laptop, the sound will randomly stop working and I can only get it back by rebooting. I can't seem to find any sort of pattern to what gets it to stop working, but I do have the following programs almost always running: Evolution, Chrome, Transmission, and Pidgin. I usually notice it first when Pidgin stops beeping when I receive IMs.
In the messages log I see lots of messages like this when the audio stops working:

I have a USB mouse which randomly stop in Debian Jessie. It starts again if I disconnect and connect it again.
It can take a couple of hours or just a couple of minutes. The only thing I've been able to find is that it stops more often when I'm scrolling.
I have tried different mice with the same result. I recently migrated from Ubuntu where I did not have this problem so I doubt there is a hardware error.
I can see the syslog updating every time I connect the mouse but I can't see anything when it stops

whenever i try to watch something on ..... and than i switch tabs for a moment. videos player becomes all gray. it happens on other video hosting sites to. what can be the cause or how to diagnose it

I've tried opening the same folder on Windows and it didn't give me any problem, so I'm assuming that the problem lies within Thunar, and not the external hard drive itself.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently migrated a home folder to a new user name. I made the necessary changes with usermod and recursively chown-ed the directory as the new user. However, one problem I've had is that Thunar is no longer showing thumbnails for images and videos. I rm-ed the .thumbnails directory thinking that it would force creation of new thumbnail files, but this didn't work. The directory stays empty.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer on Debian Squeeze (after removing Parole and its browser plugin). Now when I right-click on a file in Thunar, the menu instantly vanishes unless I hold the right mouse button down. The menu works fine, but having to hold the button down is mildly annoying.
The funny thing is, right-clicking on the background in Thunar works exactly as expected; I never have to hold down the button. And this is definitely not a mouse problem, because I can observe the exact same behavior with any mouse or touchpad.
Update: switching to a different GTK theme seems to have fixed it.
Another thing that's always worked before but now I'm struggling with in Jessie, if I open a smb:// url it just says "Not supported", is it possible to add support in Thunar? Some googling says to install gvfs but it is already installed, gvfs-open just says "command not found" though.
Strange thing is that I have tons of those little problems that seem to be regression since Wheezy but somehow I'm the only one hit heh. I actually think all the problems are caused by choosing "XFCE" on the installer because I can reproduce them 100% on any PC as long as I install XFCE, it's better to install entirely default (Gnome) and add xfce afterwards is my theory but I don't feel like reinstalling the whole system again.
how to enable the "move to trash" shortcut from the right click in Thunar? Is suddenly disappeared after some upgrading but I didn't remember exactly when.

how to get thunar with xfce 4.6 to mount external hard drives. Thunar with xfce 4.8 uses udisk, and all external and internal hard disks show up in the sidebar.With thunar in debian squeeze, though, no internal or external hard drives show up.
I can live without internal hard drives showing up, but I'd like to be able to mount my eSATA drive automatically. So far I've been completely unsuccessful in getting an entry to show up in thunar (like when a usb flash disk or cd is inserted), so I've added an entry to fstab:
LABEL=LIBRARY /home/library ext4 noauto,defaults,users And that doesn't seem to do anything. With and without the fstab line, I get a popup saying something like "Unable to mount volume "LIBRARY". You do not have priviliges to mount LIBRARY."
Everything else seems to mount fine. It's just that thunar/hal/whatever thinks that my eSATA drive is an "internal" hard drive and so doesn't treat it as removable.ALL of my drives, internal and eSATA, show up in the gtk "places" menu that is used in file-roller, iceweasel, etc. If I could find a way to get thunar to do this (like it can wtih xfce 4.8 and udisks) that would be GREAT.
EDIT: I also wanted to add that they show up in pcmanfm, but it also tells me "Not authorized" when I try to mount them.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.
3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything.That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet.Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

1) Windows ntfs.
2) distro ext4.

When I clicked their partition, system request user or root pass. I need it without password like ubuntu or mint.
Since I use openbox with some packages from Xfce4 (mainly for convenience) I get most stuff "for free" as it were when using openbox, but I can't figure out how to mount android devices in a simple way. I can either do it manually, or install some other file manager that has this capability. This leads me to my question, I've noticed that if I install Nautilus, which automatically mounts android devices OotB, I get this functionality in Thunar as well. This leads me to believe that there is clearly a dependency package of some kind installed when running apt-get install nautilus that enables it, It'd be great to get this functionality in Thunar without having all the nautilus packages just littering about for no good reason. the required package is gvfs-backends, which I should have realized when I was unable to browse smb:// addresses. You forget a lot when you only make a fresh install once every 2 years or so.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been using 10.04 since just before the release candidate, currently I've installed a clean full install of 10.04 and I've been experiencing random nonresponse times with my system. I could just be sitting here reading some email or visiting a web page and suddenly the system will just stop responding.
When this happens nothing responds. No mouse, no keyboard, nothing. It's a total lockup. This problem wasn't happening with any of the Ubuntu releases before 10.04 but something with 10.04 doesn't seem to like my system. My system is an AMD X4 Phenom processor with 7GB of ram, ATI video, etc. It's a fairly nice system and this nonresponse issue is really starting to annoy me.
Is anyone else having a similar issue? I'm going to download the 32bit version and install it to see if the problem happens there too. Not sure on how to track down what could be happening as it really look like its random at this point. Pretty strange and very frustrating. I suppose if I can't figure it out, I can just reinstall 9.10 for now.
I know this is the kind of vague post that people hate. But I'm having a problem. Every now and then (several times a day), my computer stops responding for several seconds.
I notice it most in Firefox. If I'm typing information in a form (like this one) on a web page, everything just stops. If I keep typing, the text eventually appears, apparently having been stored in a keyboard buffer.
But it's not just in Firefox. I have had the same problem in OpenOffice applications. Things just stop. The computer apears to "think" for several seconds, and then things continue.
After several seconds, everything is okay. So some people may say that this is normal. And while I'm no guru, I have been around computers for a long time, so I remember back in the day when this happened all the time. But I haven't seen it (at least to this extent) in previous versions of Ubuntu (or in Windows).
It's a serious problem.
what I should look at? I have a feeling that there is some setting somewhere (cache, etc.) that is set wrong.
programs (especially Firefox, though I haven't used other programs much) stop responding rather frequently without warning and after some time they just start responding again. Apt-get also takes ages to unpack stuff when I'm upgrading/installing something, that might be related. According to top there is barely any cpu usage at all during these freezes. I had this issue on a stock Lucid install. When Maverick came out, I tried that one, and the issue still existed. On a fully upgraded Maverick system, it's still there as well. Windows works without a hitch, as does Ubuntu running under a VM on windows.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on other machines before and have not experienced this problem. Occasionally, the system will lock up. They keyboard and mouse stop responding (my keyboard status lights no longer respond, but my optical mouse light is still on). I can ssh to the machine, and it seems to work as normal. I kill processes that are open on my desktop through ssh, (i.e., Firefox), and I notice when I switch back, I still have the same frozen image on my screen. There seems to be an issue with my mouse. This issue is present whether working in Ubuntu 9.10, or Windows 7. The mouse stops responding for a moment or two every little bit. At first I thought the problem came from power management, but that doesn't seem to be it. I tried disabling hpet, and a host of other things. Nothing works at all, and yes, I tried using another mouse. my system is nice and new

I recently decided to install Ubuntu and I went through all of the steps to set up a subversion server using svnserve. It all works except for one thing: it stops responding to remote computers after a while.I have the server on a 4 port wireless router/switch in my dorm room. I set up port forwarding so that the server receives all traic over the correct ports. The subversion server AND the default http server on Ubuntu work fine always as long as I access them from a computer connected to the switch in my room.The problem is that if I try to access it from anywhere else, it won't respond at all unless it has been accessed by a computer on the switch recently (something like 30-60 minutes). So to fix it I have to go back to my room and access it from a computer on the switch. Then it will work from anywhere for another 30-60 minutes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using a 64 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Studio. Sometimes my computer stops responding. I wouldn't say completely frozen, kinda semi-freeze. I am able to see the mouse pointer move and also when I move the mouse pointer over the Maximize, Minimize or Close buttons, the buttons get highlighted but I am unable to click on them. Alt+Tab key combination to move to another window doesn't work either. I experienced the same problem when using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit for which reason I dumped Ubuntu then.

Whenever I leave Evolution running for a while, work with something else and then get back to check my email it won't show new emails for the IMAP accounts. In the "progress bar" at the bottom it shows:Ping server XXX (0% complete) Checking new emails (0% complete) nd this seems to go on and on, I've waited for abt.0 minutes for it to finish pinging and checking for new emails but it doesn't stop. The P account works fine. If I however close Evolution and then start it again it immediately check and show new email in the IMAP accounts. Is there any solution to this

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the following behavior lately. Sometimes, when I enter a directory, during the generation of thumbnails nautilus freezes up with 100% cpu use. It has to be killed. It will then happen whenever I try to enter that specific directory with nautilus (although access with Konqueror or command-line is fine). Turning off the previews allows nautilus to enter that directory (usually... once even that didn't work). If I create a new directory and move all the files from the troublesome directory into the new directory, I can enter the new directory with nautilus and it works fine, even with thumbnails turned on. I can even rename that directory to the same name as the problematic one had and it will work. Long ago this behavior used to happen very rarely, then it seemed to be fixed, and now it is happening again but fairly frequently.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and, if so, do they know what is causing it? A simple solution is to turn off thumbnails but I'd prefer another solution.
I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 v2 and Microsoft Explorer Mouse Model 1362. The biggest issue I have right now is with the keyboard. The keyboard will start cutting out and not responding to keys. As soon as the cpu load drops then all is well. I have a PS2 keyboard that I keep plugged in just in case the load stays high and I need to type something. The mouse and the keyboard have seperate usb dongles, and when the keyboard is having issues the mouse is still working great. This tells me that either the USB radio for the keyboard gets turned off, or that something on my machine is weird. I have seen the EXACT same behaviour on 32bit and 64bit linux distros.

My config works fine when enabled but after an hour the site stops responding at all. When I restart, flush or disable iptables it works fine again. Wondered if anyone could see any glaring errors I've made
