Debian Multimedia :: Inkscape Can't Apply Some Font Cuts

Jul 15, 2015

I use the default Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 on the default 32 bit Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.1 and since I installed it I can't apply some font cuts which actually do work in other applications and did work on previous versions of Debian/Inkscape.

The cuts do show up as options in the "font/style" selection menu and i can use different versions from for example "Roboto" but if I - for example - select to use the "Semi-Light" variant of Roboto it just doesn't get applied after all. (I know that many fonts do not have any font variations and Inkscape confusingly just shows at least "italic" and "bold" as options in the style list anyway.) In this case the font variant is actually there, I can use the same font variants in Gimp and I was able to use it in previous versions of Debian/Inkscape, but not now.But I noticed instabilities in Gimp, Inkscape and Scribus lately. Gimp just consistatly vanishes when I try to scroll through the font selection menu and Scribus takes ages to load and does crush from time to time without any clear pattern to me. I don't think this is caused by Roboto itself since I used it in the past without such problems.

Should I remove all custom fonts and try if everything works ok again or does this approach sound rather foolish to you? Unfortunately I need most of the additional fonts I installed for different projects and I had them on my system in the past also without having such issues. I could however remove all custom fonts and include only those absolutely needed one by one ...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Apt-get Install Inkscape?

Apr 26, 2010

I see (been using Inkscape for couple of weeks now) that there are features that I want to harness in Inkscape 0.47. I have 0.46 on Ubuntu 9.04 in the "Ubuntu Ultimate flavour".Oh by the way, is 10.04 stable? I read that 9.10 wasn't as stable cause of new programs and software and stuff that I have no clue about (I just want linux to be my stable OS in the back ground that doesn't require to much tinkering from me). And having asked that, can I upgrade to 10.04 via an installation disk? I usually get my OS disks from...well, wont say there name otherwise I might be accused of advertising. (downloading installations is expansive with a 3G card until I get ADSL).

Debian :: Using LaTeX Text In Inkscape - PyXML Import Error

May 20, 2011

I want to use LaTeX text in Inkscape. Just a simple thing like $$x_i$$. There is an extension called textext with installation manual. Basically one have to copy four files into /usr/share/inkscape/extensions and one more option appears in Extensions menu. So far so good.

If I try to use that extension I get an error message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/inkscape/extensions/inklatex.py", line 7, in <module>
import xml.dom.ext.reader.Sax2
ImportError: No module named ext.reader.Sax2

Googling you can find several topics about that error from 2004 or earlier saying to install PyXML and providing a link to it, where it is said "Out of date. Do not use it." I have tried to build that PyXML though -- without success (lots of compile errors).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Updated ALSA For Add Bass Speaker Switch For HP Dv7?

Apr 10, 2010

I would like your input please. I'm using an HP DV7 laptop and the sound works under Opensuse 11.2 but without base. I have therefore updated ALSA to version 1.0.22.1 to make use of the introduced base switch for DV7 (ALSA changelog here)

I have tried these ALSA options but without any change / improvement to the base sound.
options snd-hda-intel=hp-dv5 and also hp-dv7 and hp_dv7
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
Any ideas?

The second line stops the sound from "stuttering" but the first seem to have no effect.

Is there some secret syntax I could put in the exceptions to the effect of "all and not firefox" (as in, make all programs an exception, except Firefox)?

Jul 15, 2010

I have not been using my lenny 2.6.26-2-amd64 for about a month or more.I booted it today, and there were over 30 updates available, inculding some kernel header updates I installed all these updates and rebooted.Well, there are 2 new entries to grub menu:Linux 2.6.32-bpo-3-amd64Linux 2.6.32-bpo-2-amd64 (single user or recovery)in addition to my old kernels. So, I chose the bpo-3 entry, but it just sits there.I have to chose the kernel before the update. Is there something wrong with the update? dit: I just found out that synaptic manager does not show 2.6.32-bpo-3-amd64 at all as being installed. In fact, it is not in the header list nor the image list.

General :: Creating A Chroot Environment - Specifically With A Different Kernel ?

May 9, 2011

I have successfully installed a Ubuntu chroot (Maverick) on a running Linux appliance (an old Thecus N5200PRO box) which has been running various services for me quite happily.

When I attempted to add a webcam (for snapshotting) to this mix, I've come up against a problem. Since the chroot by default uses the kernel of the Thecus appliance, there appears to (understandably) be no support for the Logitech UVC webcam in the appliances' kernel; consequently inside or outside the chroot I can't access the UVC webcam.

I think I can get around this in a simple way if I can run a standard Ubuntu Maverick 32-bit kernel in the chroot.

Does anyone know how to chroot with alternative kernels, or quite simply, how to get a UVC webcam accessible on a Thecus N5200PRO?

Other details:

Ubuntu :: Re-insert Icons To Top Panel? (Specifically Evolution)

Nov 8, 2010

I'm really new to Ubuntu, and am running 10.04. Anyway, I accidentally got rid of the Evolution icon in my Notification Area. Every time I try to put an icon in that section, it will not let me, and makes me put the icon on the left side of it, like on the main part of the panel. I do not know if I just hid the icon, or if I actually removed it, and I am sure the fix is really simple, I just can't seem to figure out how to do it. Also, I opened the Universal Access program when checking out all the cool things in my new OS, but I can't figure out how to hide that icon.
So if you could tell me how to unhide Evolution and hide Universal Access, in the Notification Area, that would be awesome.
Here is an image if you do not know where I am talking about, or whatever

Server :: Setting Up A Cluster Specifically For 3D Video Rendering?

Nov 1, 2010

I'm planning on setting up a server cluster specifically for 3D video rendering. In order to maximize speed I wanna use OpenGL hardware acceleration for that and I'm pretty sure that I have to use an NVIDIA video card if I want the whole thing working reliably. Will I be able to start an X-Server with GLX on an NVIDIA video card that doesn't have a monitor connected to it? And what will be the maximum "virtual" display resolution that I can use?

Since I wanna have several servers running side-by-side I really don't have the room for any monitors.Just to avoid misunderstandings: It is not my intention to show what's being rendered to anyone in real time. I will only create video files that can be downloaded later. I'm already pretty sure that this will work, probably using "CustomEDID" or something like that, but I don't have a suitable setup available to test it right now.

Debian Programming :: Assign Variable In Bash When Stdout Is Updated

Jan 17, 2014

I am writing a script that calls a program which writes a lot of lines to stdout continuosly. If the last line in stdout has some regex, THEN, certain variables are updated. My problem is that I don't know how to do that.

A simplified example would be (it's not my exact case, but it I write it here to clarify): suppose I issue a ping command (which writes output to stdout continuously). Every time that the response time is t=0.025 ms, THEN, VARIABLE1=(column1 of that line) and VARIABLE2=(column2 of that line).

I think the following code would work in awk (however, I want the variables in bash and I don't know how to export them)

Code: Select allping localhost |awk '{ if ( $8 == "time=0.025" ) var1=$1 var2=$2}'

In the previous code, awk analyzes each line of the output of the ping command as soon as it is created, so the variables $var1, $var2, ... are updated at the appropriate time. But I need the "real-time" updated values of $var1, $var2 in bash, for later use in the script.

Fedora :: Inkscape Crash On F12?

Dec 1, 2009

So I puts my shinny new F12 install on my new computer. It's a little climb for me but for the most part easier then some of the other F's that I have tried to install.

One problem I have right now is my inkscape crashes as soon as I try to put some text on a page. I tried the automatic bug report thingy but it complained about me not having a log in. inksacpe is really becoming a very important application for me, I have been trying to shy away from the Windows programs I have been using.

I must say, F12 seems to really be advancing the fedora project into a nice desktop system.
