I use programmers' dvorak. All the keys are correct when typing normally. However, the ctrl+(key) shortcuts do not always work correctly.My shortcut for opening a new terminal is ctrl+alt+t. Sometimes this works correctly, but at other times, it reverts to the qwerty. The change only seems to happen at reboot.
View 7 RepliesI recently decided to try out the Dvorak layout, and manually rearranged my keys today. For those who do not know:
Dvorak is a keyboard layout designed in the 1930's that is designed for comfort and speed. It is reported as being easier to learn than Qwerty, and more comfortable as well. Keep in mind that you can still type in Qwerty after you manually change your keyboard to Dvorak.
First, for those who want a Dvorak keyboard, you don't! You can rearrange the keys on your existing keyboard like I did. To do so, insert the dull end of a fingernail clipper (or other long, thing object) into the area between two keys on your keyboard. Be sure to unplug your keyboard first, or you might end up typing ksiwmvosioiwjefoakjsdfj;ls.xoqw, or worse, triggering a system shortcut.
Be sure to look at a picture of the current Dvorak layout first. Once you have removed the necessary keys, line up the male end of a key with the female end of the location it needs to be. Press down hard! You tap the key in its new location a few times before you proceed. Some of the keys on my keyboard were different. On my keyboard, the F and J keys and their slots were different than the rest of the keyboard. These keys sunk when pressed. To avoid this, I put these keys in upside down, as you can see in the first example.
Once you have placed all of the keys, plug your keyboard back in. Type something. You'll notice that everything is completely normal, except your keyboard looks like the something from Carmen Sandiego: Word Detective. In order to type in Dvorak, you will need to add the Dvorak keyboard layout. Doing so is simple. Go to System>Preferences>Keyboard. Go to the layout tab, and click "Add...".
If you are limited on screen space, or don't want to spend a century scrolling down to the bottom of the list, go to the "By language" tab, select English as the Language, and select USA Dvorak as the layout. If you want, you can disable "Separate layout for each window". Now, click on USA Dvorak and click "Options...". You will want to change Alt/Win behavior to "Meta is mapped to Win keys". Also disable anything under "Key(s) to change layout".
Now, click on "USA" in the notification area and notice that it says "USA2". You should now be able to type in Dvorak. Try typing something! Be amazed at how slow you are. Next, try out a keyboard shortcut. If you have Compiz, some of your shortcuts might not work. For those shortcuts that don't apply to Compiz, try rebinding them in Keyboard Shortcuts. To fix Compiz using Qwerty for shortcuts, press alt F2 and run this command:

I have 3 layouts: USA, Russian and Hebrew. In Hebrew the W key is mapped to apostrophe, so Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout doesn't close tabs in Firefox. There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. So, I am pretty confident that the key itself is functional. However, it doesn't seem to do anything in applications. For example, keyboard shortcuts in Kate (such as Ctrl+a to select all) do not work with the right Ctrl key.
Been a long time since I was on ubuntu again. Saw the new 9.10 version and decided I should take it up again. Only problem is, and I've come across it quite alot, (but never a working solution). That my ctrl key isn't doing anything at all, therefor making every keyboard shortcut (copy/paste/new tab in firefox...etc) not working. It's not compiz his fault, i've had the same issue before i installed it.
Also i tried switching keyboard layouts, when i key press i don't see the ctrl key light up on screen, BUT when i press shift+ctrl, it does Anyone got a clue in how to revive my loving and overused ctrl button again ?
What is the general way to switch the keyboard layout?
What works for me currently is the custom Section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/kbd.conf.
However this section must include Option "Device" "/dev/input/by-path/..." which identifies the current keyboard. This works fine for my laptop keyboard.
However when I attach USB keyboard, keyboard switching does not work.
I also found somewhere it should be done via /etc/default/keyboard, but that does not work for me at all.
I installed Gnome 3 Classic but I can't change my input source.in Gnome 3 I can but in Classic version I can't. In Gnome 3 I can see it beside the Clock but In Gnome 3 Classic it doesn't exist. How can I enable it?

Unfortunately with the most recent version in the stable branch the program crashes each time I try to edit text in layout mode. I didn't have this problem in older versions. So I wonder if this is a bug others noticed in Scribus 1.4.4 on Debian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie) 32-bit.
For normal text editing I use the text edit mode anyway but when I try to fix line breaks it's always hard to not instantly see what I am doing. So even if I just want to insert a single character the program crashes with the following message: Scribus crashes due to Signal #11
not sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.

View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 server (64bit) on my machine and found that CTRL-c (i.e., control key plus c) does not work in emacs 23.1 (from emacs23 package), which means I cannot quit the emacs by "CTRL-x CTRL-c" any longer.
Whenever I type CTRL-C, the emacs says "<cancel> is undefined". The "describe key (i.e., CTRL-h k)" command for CTRL-c leaves the following message in the message buffer: "<cancel> (translated from C-c) is undefined".
Until 9.10, I have never had such problems and wonder whether this has been introduced by 10.04.
In fact, I found that the behavior of CTRL-c has been slightly changed in a terminal (e.g., putty session) as well, and googling gives the following: [URL]
But I'm not sure the above has something to do with the said issue with emacs.
For some strange reason I am not able to highlight/select words using Ctrl , Shift and the arrow keys together. Each of them work individually with the arrow keys but. Is there anyway I can find out if I have assigned a shortcut to that particular combination ? (Nothing is listed in keyboard shortcuts)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed opensuse 11.3 a couple of weeks ago in 2 computers and both suffer of the same problem.In my asus laptop, i have a german keyboard. It is correctly recogniced as german keyboard by ev-dev, i guess. (ev-dev managed). But i need to write some spanisch symbols too, like accents (á © í ³ ? ñ¬ ·hich in a normal linux, they do work. For some reason, after rebooting, or after some time of having it running, the keyboard layout resets to an invalid setup, here accents get not over the letter (?a ?e ?i ?o ?u), so i have to select my layout again in the gnome control center.
With my other computermore or less the same.Its a desktop PC with an spanisch keyboard. But i thinck i picked German keyboard during installation and now it starts always with german with some sort of 5 secs delay when setting it. I have to pick spanisch and i always delete the german layout, but after some time having it running, it resets to the previusly deleted german layout.

View 2 Replies View RelatedLong story short, my HTPC has a keyboard, but no mouse.I'd gotten pretty good at working the machine with no mouse, but after my upgrade to Natty Narwhal today, the Ctrl+Esc shortcut to open the Applications window no longer works. Alt+F2 only works when another application is already open.I can get to the Applications menu using Ctrl+Alt+NumLock and mouse emulation, but it's pretty painful.Have I messed something up here? My install went a little messy, but I've managed to get everything else working and I doubt a keyboard control would be a bad install/upgrade.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything
