Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Messed Up After Nvidia Update?

Mar 27, 2011

system update today which moved the nvidia drivers from 195 to 260.After performing the update with synaptic and restarting, I noticed that my desktop theme, "Clearlooks," was messed up in that the shiny progress band was now two separate colours (blue and white). Tried other themes (among them "Glossy") and found most of them corrupted with, for example, the progress bar totally white.Similar problem with Iceweasel 4: the tabs have lost their inferior border, and the address/search bars are surrounded by white.I suspect (though I can't be sure) that the above is caused by the nvidia update. I did an "nvidia-xconfig" to try and see if this would change things, but no.

Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Error After Nvidia Driver Install

Nov 8, 2015

Problem summary:

Error - "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." and "A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again."

How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?

What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.

I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.

Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.

But problem still occurs..

Debian Multimedia :: NVidia Died With Last Kernel Update In Squeeze

Oct 21, 2010

It was no surprise that I needed to reinstall the nvidia driver after a 2.6.32-5-686 kernel update a couple days ago, but I was surprised that it didn't work. I've had to drop back to a kernel I compiled a few weeks ago, which is basically the stock 2.6.32-5-686 from that time, with a timer frequency of 1000 and desktop preemption.
Vid card is GeForce PCX 5750
Using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.22-pkg1.run

This is the command I used:
env CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.3 sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.22-pkg1.run
(After it didn't work, I ran it with --uninstall and tried installing again. No luck with that.)

Here's the nvidia installer log (sorry about the encoding. I don't know what happened with that): [URL]
rivafb, nvidiafb and rivatv are not loaded.

I don't see it in this one, but on a previous attempt, I saw an error message that said no nvidia graphics card was found. I've been suspicious that the card is slowly dying, based on problems like gray blocks on the screen or (in an older lenny install) persistence of the contents of a window appearing inside a terminal, when I switch desktops from the one where the browser is open to the one where the terminal is open. Scrolling the artifact off-screen and back, or window-shading the terminal and then un-shading it causes it to re-draw correctly.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Update Cinnamon Desktop Environment

Jul 9, 2015

I'm using debian with cinnamon desktop on a laptop with a second monitor. The panel (the bar where there are the application title bars with some system infos like battery status and clock) is only displaying on one screen depending if it is set as a primary screen. I wanted a way to get a second bar on the second monitor.

Ideally I wanted that each bar should display only the application which is present on that screen but this is completely optional. The most important thing I wanted is at least to duplicate the bar on the second monitor so I can check the clock and other infos..

First I thought that this should be only a little configuration problem.. But I rapidly understand that this is simply not possible. But I also discovered that the new version of the cinnamon desktop (2.6) have got many improvement and is that provide this dual screen options.

I then saw that my version of cinnamon is the version 2.2.16 (the version that is supported by debian). I went to the cinnamon website but I don't find any information on how to install this version.. All the information is related to the linuxmint distro.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Make Desktop Application Update Immediately

Jul 5, 2015

I created a bash script which when executed as a desktop application modifies its own application icon. This is done my altering the Icon= line in the application's .desktop file.

Here is a gif of the application in action: [URL] ..... As you can tell, there is an approximately two second delay before the icon changes. I was wondering if there was a way of making the icon change immediately.

For completeness sake here is the script I am using:

Code: Select all#!/bin/bash

LAUNCHER=/home/alessandro/.config/xfce4/panel/launcher-29/14360293821.desktop
PLAY_ICON=media-playback-start-symbolic
PAUSE_ICON=media-playback-pause-symbolic

if [ ! -z $(grep "Icon=$PLAY_ICON" $LAUNCHER) ]; then
   sed -i -e "s/Icon=$PLAY_ICON/Icon=$PAUSE_ICON/g" $LAUNCHER
elif [ ! -z $(grep "Icon=$PAUSE_ICON" $LAUNCHER) ]; then
   sed -i -e "s/Icon=$PAUSE_ICON/Icon=$PLAY_ICON/g" $LAUNCHER

OpenSUSE Install :: Messed Up NVidia Driver After Upgrade

Jul 26, 2010

I did an upgrade of Nvidia(Latest version v.196) and KDE-base4 to KDE 4.4.4(I think) in Yast2. Now when I reboot the X doesnt start. I claim it can't find any nvidia-module. I thing the upgrade of Nvidia v.196 failed, so I need to know how to reinstall Nvidia in console(CLI). It only boot up in cli. I thought it is so simple to just download the latest driver and install in CLI, but my NetworkManager doesnt start eighter so I don't have any network.

OpenSUSE 11.2 64bits
KDE 4.4.x
Nvidia NV140 Quadro 512MB

I guess my mistake was to upgrade both KDE and Nvidia in the same operation.

Ubuntu :: Unity Messed Up My Desktop / What To Do?

Jul 25, 2010

I installed the Ubuntu 10.10 beta and after intalling, it installed Unity from the Netbook edition.

I thought it was normal so I tried it out for a while but it was glitchy and I didnt like it so I tried disabling it. I couldnt find a way how to do it, and I didnt have any Panels on my desktop and my background was just plain white, all that was visible was the Unity bar on the left side of the screen.

I decided to just reset my ubuntu settings to default without losing any of my Apps, movies, music, pictures etc etc

After doing that I restarted Ubuntu but now all i get its a white background without any panels and only Docky pops up at the bottom.

Is there anything I could do?

Ubuntu :: Update Messed Up Graphics?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm not sure why this is so difficult. I decided to upgrade to 10.04 from 9.04 after an update messed up my graphics and I had to get some work done rather then sift threw a mound of sparsely detailed possibilities. Also I'm not an leet coder.

So really I've installed 10.04 on many machine's with many different video card's and many different monitors. But to some magnificently obscure reason I'm unable to set the correct resolution on any single computer. Ati, Nvidia. Not intel on second though.

I've managed to scrounge up some tidbits of info on the new KMS (kernel-mode-setting) technology. I've run threw a few suggestions threw out the forums and across the net. I've tried al sorts of drivers. I've tried removing the xorg.conf but I've seen little info on why that is other then it is not needed. I've added things to /etc/default/grub, I've removed things. I've gone threw synaptic and removed everything Nvidia and reinstalled it. This by the way is always off a fresh install every time.

So here it is. I'm at the end of my rope. I know this must be some new way of doing things but It just seems odd that every computer I've tried has failed me. I need the correct resolution to work. I can't keep burning the eye's out of my head looking for possible solutions on crappy resolutions.

I'm sorry for the rant. I'm frustrated and seriously considering switching to Redhat despite having to pay for there service's. Could anyone shed some light on my gloomy situation. I want to keep promoting Ubuntu with out saying "if you can get such and such working"

I'm trying to install the latest nVidia drivers (260. ...). I've never installed noveau or any other open source nVidia driver. Fedora :: F12 Update Messed Up Boot And Apps

Dec 18, 2009

My computer is a dual boot between windows xp and fedora 12. I am using grub and my first boot selection default was windows. My computer has the following specs:
-AMD athlon xp 2400+ at stock speed 2.0Ghz
-640mb of ram, 2x256mb, 1x128mb, all 266mhz speed
-250gb SATA harddrive, seagate
-Nvidia GeForce 4mx AGP video card
-ASUS A7V600 rev. 1.00 motherboard

I booted up fedora 12 today(12/17/2009) and did a fedora software update (task bar->system->administration->software update). It said it found 94 new updates release on (12/16/09), so click update, and the computer did its updates and reboot. Now my grub boot loader is messed up (boot default was windows, now its not) and random apps crash, like gedit, so I can't edit my grub settings to boot to windows and linux is now useless because apps keep crashing. As of right now I am using another computer to post this. I know one of the updates was a Fedora 12 kernel update. And the new updated fedora 12 "automatic bug reporting tool" does not work any more, after the update.

Some ideas I have, but I have no idea how to do them:
-uninstall last updates
-repairand/or restore bad files
This is important because I need to use some of the apps/programs for work.

Slackware :: After Update To Current Boot Is All Messed Up?

Jan 26, 2010

I have just updated current to get the new kernel and things seem to have gone just a little wrong. After upgrading i edited lilo.conf and ran all seemed fine so i rebooted to find my pc wont boot it cannot find modules and there will be trouble ahead it think it says (will check the error and add it).So i thought no problem i can just boot from an old disk i have laying around and fix it from there. I only had the 12.2 install disk or ubuntu 8.10 live cd neither of witch support ext4 which i stupidly decided to format my drives in.

Anyways i now have a ubuntu 9.10 disk and have booted and try to fix things but am miffed at whats going on. If i chroot into my slack root and look in my /boot there is only the old files before the update, but if i mount the drive in ubuntu there are the new files from after the update. What has happened and how can i fix it? It has just occurred to me i could use a tmp dir and copy the correct /boot files there then in the chroot copy them to /boot may work ?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: BBC IPlayer Desktop App Update Fails On Lucid?

On going to download, the IPlayer screen offers to install the IPlayer Desktop app, tries to install Air (already installed via Software Centre) and fails with a message like "A download error occurred. Try to download again?". Repeating just loops around to the same error message.

This happens on both my PC and laptop - both running Lucid. Have tried uninstalling the Iplayer app and Air, but still the same happens. Any suggestions, or do I have to wait for the Beeb to get it sorted?
