I'm new on this forum and i started knowing Linux with Ubuntu from about 1 year later. Now, because of some annoying problems with Ubuntu, i'd like starting a new experience with Debian.
So i tried to download it from the official website, but there are too many GB to download for my slow internet connection. Is there a way to download an iso with less GB?
I got my parts and am looking to build it tomorrow, however I don't have an OS with me to test it. This is mostly for college, multimedia stuff, so I'm obviously going need Windows on it. I'm leaning towards Debian or a Debian derivative like Ubuntu, I used that back when it was trendy and found it pretty good, but I hear Debians the same but better.
I want to get Linux on it at some stage - is it easy to install Linux on the machine first then windows, or do I have to do it the other way around? I've never installed Linux FIRST. I want to assign a particularly partition to it and keep the free space for when I install Windoze on it.
How big is the basic Debian install and where's the best place to download it? I have a shitty connection here so I can't really download a DVD image.
I am trying to download debian onto my amd64 machine, but i found a list of 8 dvds. Can I perform a complete Debian 6 installation with the DVD-1 alone? why there are so many images with different DVD names?

I use Mobile Broadband with a very modest monthly limit and remember somehow using Synaptic to gather either Updates or packages to download on one machine where there was another type of internet and could then move the packages back to my computer. Can anyone here remind me of what I would have done there or suggest a means of getting these three updated without blowing my limit. I'd either use a relative's broadband and my netbook, or do the Updates once at home and move the packages to the other two machines.
I'm using Debian 6.01, Gnome edition, 64 bit, on an Atom N450 netbook, a 3ghz dual core AMD pc and a a 2 ghz single core AMD pc, whatever of this is relevant. They have slightly different programs installed but are at the same stage of not being updated yet, with 252mb of them to add.
I have a USB which I want to use for a 'live' debian OS. I have debian 7.7 on hard disk and will be using Unetbootin to transfer the .iso file onto the USB.
However, when I go the debian archive there are so many iso files for the particular debian pkg [URL] .... There's iso, iso.contents, iso.log, iso.packages and iso.zsync. Do I download all of these iso files?
I'll be doing a Code: Select allsha256sums <iso-filename> to make sure the downloads aren't corrupted. But when I use Unetbootin and get it to write the main .iso file onto USB, do I then repeat this process with all the other iso files for the OS?
I am still having trouble installing Debian 6.0.1a (Squeeze) from either CD #1 (KDE version) or netinst version. I tried for a few months to install Squeeze with KDE desktop; now I am trying to build a server, which seems easier (no X.org and KDE problems to worry about.)
Part of the problem common to all my failed attempts (about a dozen!) seems to be that the installer tries to get packages or updates/upgrades from repos but for some reason fails.
I have a commercial all-in-one dslmodem/router/firewall which has very, very limited monitoring capabalities, just enough to show that the PC in question contacted the expected repos (I tried several in different regions) and also shows that no DNS requests failed during that time frame. I did try decreasing the security of the commercial firewall, but that seems to make no difference. I did try to save the install logs, but they didn't fit on a floppy. Any idea what could be going wrong?
I'm trying to install debian on a buffalo linksystem and the tutorial is created for a debian lenny installation but I cannot find a download mirror anywhere for anything except debian 6. point me to a download location for a debian 5 x32 cd-image?

It says:
I cannot begin to describe. All those hours of downloading for nothing! What the heck is happening here? When I try to just continue on, I get error code 3 aborts and have to just start all over.
I have tried to download the latest XFCE Live CD 8.3.0 i386 both by HTTP & torrent & have tried the same at various mirrors but the download consistently fails.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a net install with the latest release of debian - but my ethernet card is not recognized/the drivers are not available because I have a card that requires a linux kernel version of 2.6.35. This is obviously a problem because I can't download any additional packages, and I can't update the version because I'm not able to connect to the internet. I have installed it, but it's only text (which I assume is because I could not install the graphical interface, correct me if I'm blaringly wrong here). So what can I do to install debian on my laptop and be able to use my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 620 network card?

What I'm looking for is a solution or a pointer in the right direction to setup on our local Ubuntu server a sort of cache. Each day each Ubuntu on the network, checks for updates and downloads, and installs. What I'm looking for is a way for one machine to download the update and then the others to download from the local resource.
A sort of local cache to try and minimise everyone downloading straight from the net for pretty much the same updates. I did a emerge cache many years ago when I was using Gentoo, so I'm wondering what I can use/do here with Ubuntu as we are all loving this distro now.
I plan to install Debian on a machine that will have no access to the internet but I would like to install some packages in it (such as build-essential). I was thinking of downloading them here and transfer and install them on the other machine at a later time but because of dependencies I don't know what packages I'll need besides of the ones I really want, for example: After the fresh install from the cd, I would like to install build-essential which requires g++, make etc... but is there a way to download all that instead of doing it manually? Since I don't really know when to stop downloading dependencies. I tried aptitude download but it only gives me the meta-package. I also thought of chroot to a fresh system, install the packages and retrieve them from the local folder where they get downloaded but I was looking for something less complicated.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone use peer-to-peer software in Debian?I wonder if I made a mistake going with a pure Debian install.I wanted a low resource distro / DE so I chose Debian LXDE since I have some familiarity with Ubuntu.I have used Lenny before as well.But, when I install software apps, it doesn't always go in the menu. I don't mind starting the app from CLI but how do I know what to type then?!?I found that Azureus goes into the menu via 'Vuze.' Okay. But, then nothing downloads... it just sits there forever at '0.' I then tried the same file in the Windows partition and it starts downloading after a few seconds.
This pissed me off so much I started a thread in the 'Coffee Lounge' about downloading in Linux. It's complicated enough and then there's differences when using it in Linux so that it doesn't run. I am not sure what's going on but maybe there something inherent in the Debian system or Linux in general that prevents it from working?I thought maybe it is security and I have to enable something or run it in 'root mode' or something? My experience in peer-to-peer applications is mostly in Windows so I'm not sure what to do. I thought I had it working in Linux eons ago but my laptop was set up with a new install so that would have been under a different OS (version) anyway.

View 2 Replies View Relatedwhen I tried to download a installation DVD of F10 for my new thinkPad T500 laptop.The architecture of the processor should be i686 and I downloaded the DVD image Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso. I understand i686 has backward compatability with i386. But i have following questoins:
(1) why we don't have an installation for i686?
(2) If I install the i386 package, do I get performance downgrades?
(3) Also, why the live DVD has this file called F10-i686-Live.iso?
(4) Finally, I always get message like "Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct

I just installed AV Linux to an old Compaq Evo N800v laptop. I did have Ubuntu Studio on this laptop and it worked really good. But there were things I didn't like, so I tested AV Linux and ended up installing it this morning.
I ran the install without a network connection because I read a tutorial that said it was better to just get the operating system installed without any hiccups and after do the updates. So I opened the Synaptic Package Manager and clicked Reload and ended up getting this message:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot use any torrent programs because nothing will download. Every figure will sit at '0' indefinitely...forever! I can boot up my Windows XP install and it will start within a few seconds. I am just trying to figure out what's going on. Another problem is that my LXDE desktop doesn't seem to pick up every application I install. It doesn't go in the menu. I tried Torrent but it didn't go in the menu. I would start it via CLI but I'm not sure what to type. I thought there might be a security issue but that's only speculation.
I know that ports are supposed to be set via the router settings but I'm sharing the router. I might go to a relative's home and try to work on the problem there. I can go in the router there. But, I can have nothing set and just start downloading with default settings in Windows so I thought it can't be a ports problem. Unless? I'm at a loss and have no other theories. Debian and other distros want you to download their OS via torrent so to not even have it work.
I was wondering how can I re-download only all currently installed packages. I would like to save them to removable media, because I use netinst disc to install, and on slow connection it's hell to download 1GB of packages with console-only.

I downloaded Lenny on one cd long ago installed it and everything was ok. Now I notice there are about 5 or 6 dvd's and over 30 cd's for download. I notice that there is one cd for 6.0 i386 KDE version that I presume is the same as I used long ago.
