Debian Installation :: Grub Won't Install

I have an amd64 system and am attempting to install 7.8. I have two 4TB hard drives, and would like them in this configuration:
[*]md0: RAID-1 root
[*]md1: RAID-1 data filesystem (which will be about 3.9TB)
The drives have GPT.The debian installer worked fine until it was time to install grub, and then it said grub could not be installed (fatal error).I'm wondering if I need to create a small /boot partition (non-RAID)? Other than swap, the physical partitions supporting md0 and md1 are the only ones I created. fdisk shows the typical 1MB partition I see on GPT disks, though I'm not all that GPT-savvy.

I am helping my pal to get into Debian (yes first timer).He is running W7 on a 500G SATA HDD and he has another 250G SATA HDD that he wants Debian to go to.Will Debian install grub on the master bootloader even if the installation is going on a separate hard drive?I have dual boot before but on the same hard drive.

I was wondering if a lot of people advise to install Grub in the MBR but that means the last distro installed will control the booting and that distro's grub will become the bootloader? I am finding it really difficult and complicated if you don't want that situation and want to control which distro's grub does the booting. Grub2 works differently than Grub Legacy but if you use Grub Legacy and the menu.lst, I never know what entry to use when you are adding them. I have some idea but when I edit a grub entry for another distro, it never boots properly because the content I have there isn't correct.

I am trying to install Debian onto my ASUS Eee PC 1015PE from a USB flash drive. The problem I am having is that the primary HD is detected as the USB flash drive. I have to set it up this way so that it will launch the installer. Everything works great until I get to the part where it is installing Grub. It wants to install to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb. I don't see any place to change this. Once I install and remove the flash drive it will be sda.

I recently attempted to install Debian 8 on my iMac (late 2011). I partitioned my drive using disk utility to create FAT partitions (100GB for Debian and 2GB for SWAP) and installed rEFInd to boot into Debian.During the installation process I selected the drives I partitioned and set the mount points for each as / and swap.
Everything was fine and installation was successful and was prompted to restart to set up Debian. However when I did Grub did not recognise the Bluetooth keyboard. Unable to do anything it started the "Debian GNU/LINUX option" and loaded into what seems to be the grub prompt/terminal with the following displayed in bold:

Debian GNU/Linux 8 iMac tty1/I was able to get my hands on a USB keyboard which works. Obviously I can't boot into Mac now because grub has taken over.

I am new to Debian. I have installed Debian on sda1, grub installed in /dev/sda . /dev/sda6 is SalixOs.
My fdisk -l report is this code...
I boot from sda, Debian recognised windows Xp installed on sdb1, but when I choose to boot from it, it simply reboots.
What could be the reason ? I am a newbie, please be patient with me.
I have solve the problem by installing EasyBCD in WinXp and added the Linux entries to it and booting from sdb.(changed in BIOS)
So, is it possible to uninstall GRUB-2 and install GRUB-Legacy ? Would it work on Debian-Squeeze ?

I'm installing debian squeeze and and I've got 2 hdd (sda,sdb), but I want to install it on sdb. When i get to the "Install the grub boot loader on the hard disk" it automatically installs it on /dev/sda (and I get an error), I want to install it on /dev/sdb... Is it possible.

I have a VIA Epia M 5000 system with 2 western digital 1TB NAS SATA drives connected through SATA<->IDE adapter. Everything installs and writes as expected except... grub. It never boots, after a message 'Grub loading' I always get 'error: no such disk'. I've tried numerous times and has been attemping to fix the issue for the past 2 days.

update-grub2 in rescue mode generates grub.cfg with SET root=/mduuid/UUID_OF_SDA1
then after that there's search --no-floppy etc --set root=/mduuid/UUID_OF_MD0
I'm writing this from memory but simply the two uuids are different. Is this correct? I get those UUIDs to compare from blkid. All partitions are marked as bootable. grub-install /dev/sda and grub-install /dev/sdb produces no errors. grub-install /dev/md0 does not work, complains about superblocks or something similar.
Grub.cfg file contains insmod raid mdraid1x and similar lines, so that should be ok. Grub drops to rescue mode with message error: no such disk. Not device, but disk. Google finds many results for 'no such device' error, but I am not getting that error. 'ls' produces
(hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) ls ANY_VALID_PATH produces empty newline being printed, nothing more.
setting prefixes manually does not work, with error message 'error: file not found'. ls (hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub also produces empty line being printed. Rescue CD and auto-assemble of md0 and md1 works, the files are there, everything okay, except grub.

I have an issue after the installation of debian 8.2 on an usb flash drive:
I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.
So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.

I just installed debian from debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-standard+nonfree.iso and after installation, which finished without problems, I cannot boot the system. I get the error:
Code: Select allfile '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod not found
From grub-rescue via ls command I see that I don't have the i386-pc folder inside /boot/grub. I have only two files:
unicode.pf2 and grub.cfg

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

I installed lilo and it boots. How do I installed grub again. Do I just use synaptic manager to uninstall lilo and install grub?

I know grub2 does not work, giving me error: ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. I did install grub-legacy and it worked, but I had to re-install squeeze due to other problems. So, now I want to replace lilo with grub legacy.

I am dual booting Debian with windows Xp (XP for my family members ) . XP corrupted, I reinstalled it and it over written grub . Now I boot from Debian CD: advance= rescue mood = select root directory =reinstall grub boot loader .
But this gives me error : Executing grub install failed This is a fatal error how to fix that and re-install grub

I am trying to get Debian 6 to work on an hp Z400 - the problem is that it came with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 graphics card; there may be a driver for Linux, but it doesn't matter, because GRUB insists on switching to some sort of graphics mode and the screen just blanks and switches itself off. Is there any way to make sure during installation that GRUB gets configured to stay in character mode only?

So I am stuck in the bootloader hell. With a vintage PC
Ok, so here's the setup:There is one HDD, with two primary partitions: 1st for the system, 2nd for the swap. I booted Luit Linux Live CD, and ran it's HDD install script. The Luit Linux is based on Damn Small Linux that uses kernel version 2.4.22. For some reason, it's bootloader LILO install did something wrong and the fresh install wouldn't boot
Error 15 By the way, I don't understand why the bootloader texts refer to GRUB, while the install script definitely was installing LILO.
I can now boot again with that same Live CD (or any other CD that would boot to Linux), and once loaded, mount the hard disk and check and update it's contents. I'd like to install there as up-to-date GRUB version what that ancient hardware (48MB RAM) can take, and then configure the GRUB to load that install that's sitting on the hdd.I will be very grateful for any advice. Unfortunately my knowledge of things like GRUB is very poor, so it's difficult to look up advice by searching the internet.

I have downloaded the Wheezy DVD 1 and started the istallation process. The installation time is strangely very short in respect to the Squeeze release, anyway
The GRUB installation step fails. I terminated the installation without a bootloader and rebooted from DVD with the rescue boot option.
Now I asked for a console to try to manually install the bootloader but the following command:
# grub-install /dev/sda1
[where sda1 is my root partition]
gets the following message:
/bin/sh: grub-install: not found
What can I do?

I'm attempting to install Debian to an NVMe SSD (Samsung 950 Pro), however both Jessie and Stretch images fail to install grub.
Checking the syslog reveals the following error:
grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of /dev/nvme0n1p5
Further Information:
Fast-boot is disabled in the UEFI, and boot mode is set to UEFI only, no CSM. I do not see any option for 'Secure Boot' if it's relevant to the issue.Windows 10 has already been installed, which created several partitions. The ESP/EFI partition appears to be on nvme0n1p2I only created one partition for Debian - / on nvme0n1p5, no separate partitions for /boot, /home etc.

I am using this image of Debian: [URL]. But it doesn't matter what I do I fail to make it persistent.
I have tried this: [URL] But there is no "grub" on my "install" drive, apparently is an outdated notion.
I have tried this: [URL] (with conflicting info regarding the previous link). By booting with a knoppix USB with gparted. Doesn't matter if I leave the NTFS partition unnamed or call it home_rw, I get no persistence, even writing persistent while booting.
I have tried also changing this (while in knoppix): [URL]. Basically adding the word "persistent" after "live" but it does not work. All changes I make disappear. What it the current way of getting persistence with this package?

Im currently not an linux expert so I turn to this forum after several attempts to fix my issue with grub.
I had a dualboot single HD with both win7 and win8.1 when I decided to install debian wheezy from usb.
I deleted the win7 partition and installed debian there. The partition scheme is separate /home
After reboot I automatically get into the "Grub rescue mode" and now I´m stuck.
I tried the commands:
set prefix=(hd0,msdosX)/boot/grub/
Insmod normal
I have msdos1, msdos3, msdos5 and msdos6 but nothing is listing anything from the grub rescue mode.
I get the "UNKNOWN FILE SYSTEM" error and cant get past that.
I also tried booting into rescue mode from usb iso install but nothing happens when choosing to repair GRUB.
The listed devices in rescue mode are:
/dev/sda1
/dev/sda2
/dev/sda3
/dev/sda5
/dev/sda6
debian uses sdb 1-2 and sdb1 is the only option to Reinstall GRUB on but it gives me "Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sdb1 This is a fatal error" message

Im trying to install Debian on my server. Some hardware descriptions:
- Inel Xeon processor
- 03:01.0 RAID bus controller: Adaptec (formerly DPT) SmartRAID V Controller (rev 01)
There is configured by hardware one RAID 5 on four scsi disks of 73GB. I tryed with Lenny and Squeeze versions and both presented the same error when the install try to install grub:

I have just upgraded my Xen system from squeeze to wheezy. Things seem to have worked except for one very important problem: I'm getting two grub menus. I get one white-on-blue that comes up first. It says GNU GRUB version 1.99-27+deb7u2 at the top. (It defaults to the wrong image... but that is an issue to address later.) I choose "Xen 4.1-amd64".Then I get a second grub menu that is white on black: GNU GRUB version 1.99-27+deb7u2 at the top. I have two options "Debian GNU Linux with Xen 4.4-amd64 and Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64" and the other "Debian GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.2.04-amd64 (recovery m->"
This is reminiscent of the cascade option from upgrading from legacy grub to grub2... but both menus say 1.99-27... so I don't know what the heck is going on here. I have tried running upgrade-from-grub-legacy and grub-install and grub-updater etc. etc... but it always comes up the same. I cannot have that. This is a server, I need it to boot to the appropriate kernel image -- and preferably with only one grub menu!Here are the grub-related packages I have installed:

I had windows 7 and i installed ubuntu both on primary partitions. They were running normally and the dual boot was working well. After that I installed debian on a third different logical partition of my disk and then only debian was running and windows and ubuntu didn't. Ubuntu does not seem even when the computer starts! Then i reinstalled ubuntu over the debian so i can run only ubuntu. I cannot see windows 7 at all when grub starts
command sudo fdisk -l gives me:

I'm having issues with a RAID array.
Setup is like this:
Debian Jessie, 2 hard disks, each having 2 partitions: /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2. Partitions were paired during installation, so they form /dev/md0 and /dev/md1. /dev/md0 is the root (/) partition, /dev/md1 is for /home.
At the end of the install process, I chose /dev/sda1 to carry Grub. And I think this is where I screwed things up.
After removing one of the hard drives, there was no boot capability. So, I installed Grub on /dev/sdb, too.
Now it displays the boot menu but cannot find the kernel. This is where I got lost in the process.
Do I need to reinstall the OS or is there a way to fix it? I suppose I have to edit Grub.

I recently purchased a new Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and am having problems installing the latest version of Squeeze from CD. After receiving the laptop, I started it up, configured Windows 7, and confirmed everything is working correctly. Next I went through the Debian installer, which completed successfully. I'll be dual-booting Windows 7 and Debian, so at the partitioning stage I resized my NTFS partition, added a shared VFAT partition, then used the "Guided" install to create my root and swap partitions. My partition layout is code...
I assumed something was wrong with grub, so I booted the CD into rescue mode and chose to reinstall grub onto the Master Boot Record. But nothing changed. Just to experiment, I went into fdisk, deleted all my new partitions (leaving just the Windows ones), and tried rebooting, but the same error happened. I then went through the Debian installer again, being careful to set everything up correctly, but still, the device won't boot.
I'm not even getting to the grub boot screen, so something is wrong even before the point. Reinstalling grub to the Master Boot Record (grub-install /dev/sda) isn't changing anything. How can I troubleshoot this?

I installed Windows Xp 64bit(in a partition called d:) with dual boot with Debian Wheezy. Installed first Windows Xp and after Debian Wheezy, but grub is not seeing Windows!
Look at my "fdisk -l".

I was told i need to reinstall the server so I've downloaded the ISO files i need.
I've connected the ISO to the machine but i don't know what yo do next.
I've read online that i need to do ls and find where the ISO is so i can boot from it.
But i get error unknown filesystem for everything so i don't know what to do?
