About two years ago I changed bios settings in my laptop so booting from cd or usb would not happen, this in a paranoid attempt to thwart would be hackers from taking control of my computer, and of course set a bios password to avoid tampering.
Now, what the bios password is and am unable to remove it with out changing the motherboard.
Is there any other way to install debian other than booting from usb or cd/dvd?
My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
I've been using linux distros on my desktop forever, and got a windows 10 laptop recently. I want to dual-boot debain (jessie), so I installed it and it worked fine. Unfortunately, I have to enable Legacy mode in BIOS to boot into my grub then linux machine. Is there a way I can have my computer boot without legacy boot?
View 2 Replies View RelatedBefore the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?
I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this pst or not, first on this forum. I just removed Fedora Core 4 from my system and installed Debian Sarge with the 2.6 kernel. I'm a newbie. The install seemed to go fine, after it was done I actually logged in and looked around some. I then restarted to check to make sure that my boot process went ok and I could still get to windows. Worked fine. Then I tried to boot back into Debian. It hung. I rebooted and tried again. Hung again in the same spot.

I've try to uninstall the "Installer Loader" from Windows and I got an error message about BCDEDIT (if I'm not wrong), during uninstallation process.
I ignore it, and continue the uninstallation process until complete. But, After I reboot my computer, the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I'm using Windows Vista Business SP2.
After a fresh install of 7.7.0 (amd64), I'm unable to boot into Debian. I get the following error constantly when booting in recovery mode:

A bit of Googling seems to indicate that this is due to my video card (Geforce GTX 750Ti). Unfortunately, my motherboard doesn't have any monitor ports, so I'm forced to use a video card in order to use a monitor. Something I didn't foresee being an issue, but what can you do. How should I resolve this? Is there an ISO that has the (presumably non-free) drivers included? A way I can add the drivers during boot (I am able to boot into my Windows partition by changing the boot order, don't know if I can do anything useful from here)? Or do I have to do something crazy like buy/borrow an older video card just so I can properly boot into Debian, and then install the drivers?
I've got a secondary problem: GRUB has my Debian install as the only option, even though I had Windows 8.1 installed first. I don't know if this is related to the problem above, or it's a known problem with newer versions of Debian and/or Windows (and I have to update the menu.lst or whatever myself), or if it's due to the way I set up partitions. My current setup is:
SSD:
- Windows boot partition
- Windows main partition
- Debian / partition
- Debian swap partition
HDD:
- Debian EFI partition
- Debian /home partition
- Unallocated space (will eventually be a NTFS partition for shared storage)
This is the first time I'm using a motherboard with EFI/UEFI. It's also the first time I have an OS taking up partitions on multiple physical devices. I don't know if either is the cause of GRUB not detecting Windows.
I downloaded the 64bit net installer. I install just the standard, reboot and the machine hard locks on me. It appears to be locking up on Bluetooth.

Ok so I wanted to try out Debian, so I got the wheezy live image (gnome) via torrent. The problem is after I write the image to the USB, the computer cannot boot from it. It doesn't even display the USB in the boot menu. I've tried many ways of writing the image like dd, powerISO, UUI, imagewrite (not sure if that was the correct name) etc. Strangely enough, it works on a virtual machine via Plop Boot Manager, but not my actual PC.

I've installed Ubuntu lots of times on my UEFI computer without any troubles. The last few days, I've been trying to install Debian Jessie on my computer. I do the steps bellow:
- Download the corresponding iso (amd64).
- Create a UEFI bootable USB drive with Rufus.
- With Safe boot, Fast boot and CSM disabled, I boot to the USB drive.
I expect to see something like this:
But what I get is this:
I'm using an Asus PC. GL550JK. The UEFI version is 205 (from Asus Support website).
Things I've tried:
- Booting with CSM on => Same behaviour. It's not my intention to install debian with CSM on, though.
- Using Wheezy instead of Jessi => Same behaviour.
I have two desktops running wheezy for years without problems. Recently, I reinstall jessie on one of them and won't boot anymore.The hardware is pretty normal: Asus motherboard, 12GB RAM, Nvidia video card, SSD hard drive, .After the install of jessie finishes, the very first boot failed, which means it hung up forever. The part that is annoying is that it fails at different places whenever I try.
For example, something, it fails at the following:

Sometimes, it failed at start job is running for lsb set console font.It even failed to the console. When it goes to the console login, I can't put any user name or password. It's all frozen.The problem appears to be video card problem. But it worked fine in wheezy.
I tried to boot the net installer (debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso) from a flash drive (installed with dd). When I tried to boot that, my BIOS skipped the flash drive, which I had set the flash drive as the first boot device. So, I put it on a CDRW, and got the same result. I also tried the offline installer (debian-504-amd64-CD-1.iso) using both of those methods, with the same results. I verified the MD5SUM of this download. I am installing on a computer with a 64 bit Pentium 4 Prescott, if it matters. I have no other working OS on the computer. What other options do I have? Or am I doing something wrong?
View 8 Replies View RelatedHad an old Power Mac G5 (dual 1.6ghz 256MB ram) collecting dust, so I did some research and came upon Debian Lenny. Idea was to setup the mac as a home server to share with Win7 HTPC/OSX 10.6 macbook pro/Ubuntu9.10 dell laptop machines in my house. With so many different OS's running in my house, I thought it would be the ideal solution! Downloaded and installed the Debian on the G5. Now after the fresh install.
I hear the "mac chime." Then I get:

This screen loops with a folder and the finder icon w/ a ? mark.... Also, the longer this loops the faster the fans go!
I'm working from the set of Debian instructions following this post. I have saved the correct image file to my USB flash drive per the instructions for Intel x86. I've got a Celeron HP, 512 RAM, 1.3 Ghz processor, XP Home SP3. After saving file to USB flash drive, I extract file and a single boot file then appears next to zip folder. I tried extracting by command: # zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdX and that does not work; not recognized or something (I'm going from memory). Command line is C:/User/Docs and Settings or such, no option for G: drive in Command line, if that helps. I am no Command line pro. Got there by Accessories/ Command line. (Is this the same thing as Start/Run/msconfig, dnsflush etc?)So since I can't extract with Command line it follows that the "mount" instructions don't work for me either: mount /dev/sdX /mnt. So I just re-booted with USB drive in, and pressed Del and Esc alternately like a madman for about 5 boots, but does not open in BIOS; instead Windows opens normally.
I know my way around a little PHP/MySQL/Javascript libraries, but if the Linux world is this difficult at the outset, I can only imagine the nightmare I'm in for if I succeed in getting my system converted--which is what I would want to do--not set up partitions, etc. There is an all-in-one file hd-media/boot.img.gz which contains all the installer files (including the kernel) as well as syslinux and its configuration file.Note that, although convenient, this method does have one major disadvantage: the logical size of the device will be limited to 256 MB, even if the capacity of the USB stick is larger. You will need to repartition the USB stick and create new file systems to get its full capacity back if you ever want to use it for some different purpose. A second disadvantage is that you cannot copy a full CD image onto the USB stick, but only the smaller businesscard or netinst CD images.After that, mount the USB memory stick (mount /dev/sdX /mnt), which will now have a FAT filesystem on it, and copy a Debian netinst or businesscard ISO image to it. Unmount the stick (umount /mnt) and you are done.

I am talking about a fakeraid scenario. Is there anything I need to do to make it work, or do I need a separate /boot partition which isn't on the array?
View 3 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately I only minored in Computer Science, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and unfortunately I stopped using Linux after those classes. During this time I actually really got to like Linux (the class used Ubuntu but my friend who was majoring in it got Debian for me).
I only got a C in that class because like I said, it was something I minored in. Anyways, my main question is how do I install Debian on a USB (not a FAT32) so that if I move it from home to work or something, I can just boot up the USB and start using Debian on that computer (assuming it has something else like Windows for example)?

Is it possible to install Windows XP on a machine that already has Debian 7.8? I find lots of articles on installing Debian after but not before XP.
I would like to get a prompt at startup to select Windows XP or Debian 7.8 and then choose which one I want. The reason I want to do that is because I have Guitar Pro on XP and cant find anything as good and also I want to watch Netflix and cant seem to be able to find a way to do that on Debian 7.8 except windows emulator which defeats the point of Debian anyway. Also my Epson V500 will not work on Debian 7.1 and I have tried everything, been to Epson, installed drivers etc..

The installation of the latest stable on my Lenovo G505s went just fine in UEFI mode but when the installation finished I never reach grub during the bootup process. I put Refind media onto a usb stick and boot into my computer using it after that I tried to follow this guide URL...

I have an system that d8.2 appears to install correctly. On first (or subsequent) boot, I get the DB8 load screen, then a quick fsck, then nothing. I appear to have some sort of environment running as I can move a mouse pointer, but nothing else.
CTRL-ALT-F2 results in the mouse pointer vanishing, but nothing else. I expected to end up at the CLI.
I have tried different installs and options, always the same result. This machine ran an earlier version with issues.
got a lenovo B50-30 (no touchscreen) that came preeinstalled with windows 8. after installing debian im unable to boot windows , im not too great with grub configuration.this is what i suspect is the menu entry for windows in the grub boot menu .

i would like to know how to configure windows to boot from the grub2 menu.
I installed Debian 5 hours ago, and I am fighting with it since then. I'll pass on the tons of issues I am encountering (wrong desktop environment (I asked for debian's, I got Gnome), shitload of various errors when doing basic things, resolution of a minitel).
The biggest issue I am having is that Grub is not listing Windows and I can't boot into it. I've tried os-prober and update-grub, the boot info script detects Windows 7 (it's windows 10 but, whatever), I've tried to boot into a windows repair USB stick and fix the mbr and boot through the cmd (which both returned success). I am currently trying to create boot-repair USB stick, but I keep getting errors about file systems not handling symbolic links...
How can I repair Windows boot (which seems to have been messed up by Debian's setup)..
Also, I am quite used to linux and unix systems, as I am dev and use Mac OS at work and used Ubuntu/Fedora for years, and I never had such a bad and messy experience with any of those OS...

In my pc I have Ubuntu and Windows while Debian on external HDD, and when boot from usb opens a black screen. Have done a boot-repair test and the result is this: URL... (there isn't MBR in sdb) now I need to istall manually it. What are the commands?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't get debian 5.0.4 i386 to load I can get as far as root for crash repair during boot-up but much further than that and my monitor turns off. Ubuntu 8.04.4 live cd (kernel is 2.6.24 i believe) works but says I have to enter noapic in the boot string. APIC is on and greyed out i.e. not accessible in BIOS --- might be non-compliant Only thing I can think of is to add acpi=off in GRUB entry but the change doesn't seem to work or take effect. I added it to the relevant entries in menu.lst in grub and it still didn't take effect. Grub must be getting its config info somewhere else...
