Debian :: How To Stop Program Running After Finishes Booting

Sep 5, 2011

I have a Debian Etch machine that was given to me but when it boots up it executes a program that is located on my desktop.

I don't want to move or rename the program but would like to prevent it from starting when the machine starts. Anyone have any idea as to what file I need to edit in order to achieve this?

Ubuntu Installation :: PXE Install Finishes, But No Subsequent Booting?

May 5, 2010

I have a Toshiba Satellite A55-S106 with a bad CD-ROM. It can't boot to USB, so I've taken to doing PXE installs.I had done a PXE install for 9.10. After the install, GRUB told me that it couldn't find the UUID. I was able to edit the grub config file and remove references to the UUID and it booted okay.I tried to do an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. The whole upgrade finished, and upon rebooting I saw the purple Ubuntu screen with the red dots, then a blank screen and no hard drive activity. I'm able to read the drive in a LiveCD Environment, but I can't figure out how to make it boot yet.

Fearing for the drive, I put a second hard drive in the laptop and installed 10.04 fresh, again using PXE. Same deal -- install finishes, purple screen, then blank screen and no hard drive activity. Here's a video of the laptop in action:v=T0VgfOA05T0 -- the status lights from left to right are "plugged in", "power on", and "hard drive".I feel like this is probably the same issue as before -- where I should go into GRUB and fix the issue, but I can't figure out how to get into GRUB in 10.04!Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? I have some data on the first hard drive that I'd like -- not irreplaceable, but it would save me some time if I could get the drive to boot. (I apparently said "yeah, encrypting my home directory sounds like a great idea

General :: Run A Command After An Already Running, Existing One Finishes?

Sep 11, 2011

If I start a script that is going to take a long time, I inevitably realize it after I've started the script, and wish I had a way of doing some kind of alert once it finishes.

So, for example, if I run:

really_long_script.sh

and press enter...how can I run another command once it finishes?

Ubuntu :: Execute Bash Script After Running Process Finishes?

Jul 28, 2011

I have a computation going which takes a long, but uncertain, amount of time. I have another computation which needs to be run, but _after_ the first one is done. I won't be at the computer at that time to manually start the new process. I've done some Googling, and I found how to delay execution by a specific amount of time (e.g. "start process x in exactly 8 minutes from now), but that isn't quite what I want to do. Essentially, I'd like to tell the shell, "When process #nnnn finishes running, then start process x". Is there a way to do this?

Debian :: Usplash Causing Booting Sequence To Stop

Sep 4, 2010

I have debian/sid on my new hp/Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop. I installed usplash and started getting booting issues every fourth or 5th boot. The system stops responding till I power off the system by pressing the power switch. I checked the syslog and noticed that it also stopped without logging the cause.

By the way, except the above issue, every thing works great on my laptop with debian/sid including the wireless using the native linux driver which I obtained from hp website.

Debian Hardware :: Mouse: Stop Moving - Not Associated With Any Program

Jul 25, 2011

Im totally newbie is *nix OS (including debian) but more than pro in Win, so treat me with understanding,

TECH SPEC:
Debian 6
Gnome 2.30.2

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Mouse still working well during random period of time (it may be less then one minute and more then few hour's from boot up) then instantly stop moving (cursor are freeze) but it still active. Obviously it is not associated with any program, coz it happens even on log-on screen.

One thing make this case unusual - im using Logitech Wireless Desktop MK710 keyboard + mice set. It mean there is only one receiver for both devices. You guessed it, keyboard continues to operate normally after mouse fail! Absolutely normally! Even more, if i connect new wired usb mouse at this time, it will be work well, but not for log... after random period of time it goes freeze too =/ KEYBOARD STILL WORKING

Upon booting, how can I know which program starts first? Also, how can I force something to start after something else? For instance, how do I make sure that everything I deem as "not urgent" to load after the GUI and also how do I make sure things like firestarter start before fail2ban, etc?

Debian :: How To Get Rid Of Option To Remove Uni-booting Even Though Uninstalled Program

Sep 4, 2015

So I had decided to install debian but I thought I couls do it by myself without anything which I was wrong about, because I wound up installing Debian on my C: drive/windows partition. So far nothing has been bad and I am still running windows but now my C: drive has been renamed to "Install Debian GNU/Linux" I know the name doesn't mean shit but I'm curious why every time I go to change it it auto changes back. Also now every time it boots up it asks me to choose between UNetbootin, which i uninstalled, and windows. how do i get rid of the option to remove unetbootin even though I uninstalled the program. Same with Debian I deleted everything i could find but it still changes the drive name, how to fix any of this and might there be files I haven't found where would they be located?

Debian Programming :: Memory Usage When Running Java Program

Jun 28, 2013

I have a java program that runs on Debian as a background processor. Yesterday the Java program stopped running. I looked at the memory usage, the system only had 5MB memory left, so my guess is that the java program ran out of memory to use.

However, after we restarted the java program, we could see that the free memory count started to go up. It kept going up from 5MB to over 400MB. The increase of memory happened slowly, when I measured it, I could see that with each minute passing by, there were a bit more memory added into the free memory pool, and meanwhile, the java background process was running.

I wonder why this would ever happen. It's as if our java program first brought the machine done because it consumed all the memories, then after restart, it starts to give back memories.

I found alot of people with this problem since Ventrilo only has 32bit Linux servers and this solution seems to work for everybody but me. Ubuntu :: PC Restarts After Booting From DVD / Stop It To Do So?

Jul 31, 2010

I'm a WuBi user, and wanted to upgrade XP to 7, I've upgraded it partially when in XP. So as expected he messed up my grub.

But now I have the problem:
Every time I insert the Windows 7 DVD the pc says "Please press any key to boot up from CD/DVD" (as normal), but when I press the "any" key, the PC does absolutely nothing and just restarts.

Not to long ago I used the same DVD on another laptop for an equal upgrade (XP to 7) that went flawless.

My booting set-up is correct, cleaned the disc 500 times now, nothing out of the ordinairy done to my boot-screen or the BIOS... And as far as I know, no blue screen of death when installing the upgrade.

I haven't got a clue what I have to do.

Ubuntu :: Pam_unix Stop Booting The Auto Login System?

Feb 21, 2011

I already have two other threads open for a dysfunctional system. Thread 1: Boot hangs at logon sound - no video signal - appears drive is still working [URL]..Thread 2: Where are boot log files and how I can see those? [URL]...Basically both of those are for not able to complete the boot (hanging up in the middle of booting) in Karmic. I had Karmic since it came out but suddenly about two weeks ago just stopped booting. Except for the battery and resetting BIOS, I had checked all the hardware - and all appear to be okay. Following a tip from x1a4, I started looking into logs (admittedly not knowing exactly what I am looking for) and I ran into auth.log. Following is the code. The highlighted part is confusing (to me) and I am wondering if this may cause to stop booting (or completing the boot process) since I was using auto logon. I do not know if there is anything else (logs) you may need, please advise and I will provide those.
