i have external hard drive which will be used for windows and i have to format it. i tried with disk utility program but it tells me all the time device is busy. in terminal its too complicated for me.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI put a larger drive in my netbook and stuck the old in an external USB enclosure so I could use it for backups. It had three partitions on it, ntfs and linux so I deleted all the partitions and created one big linux partition. Every time I write and exit fdisk the removable disk utility in KDE pops up and says ntfs drive. If I ignore it and try to formatit wants to use ntfs, if I fsck.ext3 it saysThe superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2filesystem. If the deviceis valid and it really contains an ext2filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblockis corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:e2fsck -b 8193 <device>2fsck -b 8193 doesn't work either.It seems like its caching something, I can print the partition table and see the one linux partition I created.

I just bought a new 320gb laptop hard drive and mounted it into an external enclosure. The hard drive has never been formatted. I plugged it into my computer running Ubuntu 10.10 and nothing happens. I expected something toopup and say the drive has not been formatted and give me formatting choices. I looked in Places>Computer and it's not there. I even looked in Gparted and it does not show it. So how on earth do I format a new external hard drive?

After finding out my computer couldn't but up from a external hard drive I wanted to format my drive. When I plugged it into my computer, Windows would not recognize it. I then dual booted Ubuntu 11.04 onto my laptop and attached my drive. Ubuntu found it a recognized it as 3 separate disks. I then opened up disk utility and told it to format the drive. After clicking a couple "OKs" I got an error message: An error occured while performing an operation on "500 GB Hard Disk" (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex): The device is busy I clicked details and got:One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb. I was wondering what I could do since it isn't doing anything in the first place. I just want to format the whole thing.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Seagate external hard drive and I want to use it to back up my home server since it runs Ubuntu 6.10 and the upgrade to 10.10. My problem is that I am not able to format the drive to use it. I can not change the permissons or if I try to format I have all sorts of trouble. I have tried doing it on the home server running 6.10 and another pc running 10.10 and had no luck. Is there a better way? I have even tried chmod and chown with no luck.

I've copied some stuff to it and practiced partitioning and formatting with it, but I want to use something to erase it completely. Is this possible if the USB is connected to a ThinkCentre 8187-EJU with an Ubuntu 10.04 OS? I've used Dban to erase regular hard disks but don't any software that could be installed on my computer that would erase a USB drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.

I have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have WD external hdd (80GB) formatted with fat32. I was using this hdd to transfer the data from computer A (LINUX, RH9) to computer B (Win7).
I was keep copying and deleting the data in the WD hdd during the data transfer because the amount to transfer is more than 300GB.
After doing this several times (and the WD drive was emptied), comp. A said the disk is full. I checked using 'df' and it was really full but 'ls -la' shows that there is no data in it.
I checked it in comp. B, and it showed empty. I tried to format in comp. A using 'mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/xxx# (block#)', but showed an error message like below.
'Warning: block count mismatch: found 78xxxxx but assuming 0'.
I found a similar situation in this forum metioning 'possible damaged linux kernel (not exactly same expression though)', so I re-installed linux in comp. A, but the problem was not solved.

Santa brought me an early Christmas present: a new External HD - Verbatim CLÖN - 250GBPlug it in and it works great. Have 4xSamsung F4 HDDs in an Ex503, Raid 05 - don't know how to format them to get maximum speed out of them. I've read [URL] tor_issues and other things but guess i am too dumb. Some claim using GPT Partition table and gparted and i shouldn't have any problems because it's automatically doing what i want, but i am not sure about that.

I remember being able to format a 3.5 inch floppy using MS DOS. The command was format a:/s
("a" was the drive letter and the "/s" was to add the bootable system file.)
HOW can I do that in LINUX, specially Debian 6.01 (my current version) I googled it and found a bunch of sites all offering answers.
NONE worked for me, I saw an option in a Slackware installation with a "make bootable USB stick option".
(It can be used as a rescue USB Stick also) We don't have that in Debian. How can I do that with my current Debian install?
I have several Debian USB installs on flash drives, They work great and give the user an opportunity to run and experience Debian with modifying their set-up. I am trying to set-up one that will NOT only boot and work as a live install, but will also allow me to install on the host machine right from the working USB Flash drive, if I choose to do so.

but so far all I get in Windows when I try to access the share is a prompt for credentials, which is what I want to avoid.
I've installed libfuse2 and ntfs-3g. Now when I reboot, the drive shows up in fdisk. In Gnome File system, the folder shows up in /media as /media/Storage. I didn't issue the mount command, it went there automatically. In terminal, I can access Storage and read/write to files on it. BUT, if I double-click the folder in Gnome, I get a brief glimpse of all the folders in Storage, then they disappear and the drive unmounts. The desktop icon goes away, and I can't see it when I issue sudo fdisk -l. I can get it back with a reboot. I've tried an entry in /etc/fstab, but that makes no difference. I didn't find anything specific to address this on this forum or after Googling.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an external usb connected floppy drive that I cannot mount.#fdisk -1 does not show the drive, in my ignorance I thought that it being a usb it would be recognized the same as flash drives and my external usb ide hdd are recognized.The drive does work, I have tested it in windows computers.Does the floppy need special settings?This may be related or it may be another issue totally:The floppy is recognized in gparted although I cannot format the disc to fat16 or fat 32 as they are greyed out.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAlright, im completely new to linux. I am somewhat knowledgeable with computers in general. My programming instructor for school told us that it would be in our best interest of the course to grab a linux distro and install it on our computers. (Don't ask me why, i dont know)ANYWAY, i am trying to get debian to install on my external USB 1.5TB Seagate HDD Drive. After learning a lot about Murphy's Law, i had to fix my MBR for windows (the windows installation is located on my internal SATA 1.5TB Seagate Drive) because GRUB wouldnt boot to windows unless i had my external plugged in.
So, the natural solution to me was to fix the MBR, unplug the internal, then re-install on my external, it worked. Well to my surprise, this cloud i was on... wasn't cloud 9. NOW, Debian will boot if i have the external plugged in and windows will boot if i have the internal plugged in. The Problem is, when i have both plugged in and my external set as the boot drive i get this weird error and it will not let me boot linux.Now, i have searched for a fix.. But the ones i have tried so far haven't worked or i wasn't sure how to use those fixes(because im new).The error went as follows:/bin/sh can't access tty; job control mode offthen i get a initramfs command line. (I think thats proper terminology)The temporary fix i have going right now is i have my computer open and the SATA cable unplugged so i can boot to Debian.

I have the Debian Lenny 5-0-5 DVD's but they are not live bootable. They come with a setup.exe file which copies over the kernel images to boot from windows. Thing is that at the moment I am running the Ubuntu distro of Debian and cannot use the setup to do it. Can anyone tell me how to boot this disk in ubuntu itself?
Also does the debian installer allow you to choose which disk it installs to?(I am talking about the thing in the ubuntu installer that allows you to partition disks and define your own mount points before the install)
