Debian Hardware :: Nvidia Fancontrol / Way To Set Fan Speed Below 35?

Jul 15, 2011

I'm using an nvidia geforce 9500 gt with the nvidia kernel module.
The manual clocking in nvidia-settings works the manual fan speed
too but only between 35 and 100.
Got coolbits 5 in my xorg.conf file.

Anyone got a way to set the fan speed below 35?

Debian :: Full-upgrade Fails At Stopping Fancontrol

Jul 11, 2015

summary: `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` (to jessie) ran long time before hanging @

Code: Select allSetting up fancontrol (1:3.3.5-2) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/fancontrol ...
[ ok ] Stopping fan speed regulator: fancontrol.

Killing the job produced damage detailed below. How best to proceed?

details:

I'm upgrading a 7-year-old 64-bit Clevo/System76 laptop to jessie. My first run of `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` ended after fetching packages, with the following lines ending the console spew:

Code: Select allGet: 2051 http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie/main user-setup all 1.61 [196 kB]
Fetched 1,816 MB in 17min 38s (1,715 kB/s)
E: This installation run will require temporarily removing the essential package python:amd64 due to a Conflicts/Pre-Depends loop. This is often bad, but if you really want to do it, activate the APT::Force-LoopBreak option.
E: Internal Error, Could not early remove python:amd64 (2)

So I started a second run with `sudo aptitude -o APT::Force-LoopBreak=true full-upgrade`. I left it running overnight, checking back periodically to OK overwriting `/etc/*` files with package-maintainer's versions. Friday I checked the box ~0900 and found

Only GUI application running was `gnome-terminal`, with the upgrade running in a single tab. This was working as intended, since I closed all other apps, and all but one `gnome-terminal` tab, before starting the upgrade. desktop environment (DE)=Cinnamon (also as intended) mouse was non-responsive: swiping the touchpad produced no movement keyboard appeared non-responsive (but more on that below) internal fan was running apparently full-speed (certainly as loud as I've ever heard it) console spew ended with the following 3 lines:

Code: Select allSetting up fancontrol (1:3.3.5-2) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/fancontrol ...
[ ok ] Stopping fan speed regulator: fancontrol.

I left it running in hope the upgrade would recover, but after 7 hours nothing had changed, so I attempted to kill the job. The following all failed:

invoking shutdown via desktop menu (neither mouse movement nor pressing Super key produced any change) C-c/Ctrl-c in the terminal tab (nothing changed in the GUI) A-F2/Alt-F2 (trying to run another `gnome-terminal` to run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but no dialog appeared) C-A-F1 (to goto tty1 and run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but again no change in GUI/X)

The good news is, the box did reboot after `A-SysRq-[REISUB]`, though only to tty1. From there, `sudo dpkg --audit` produces these results.

So obviously the upgrade is incomplete; how best to resume it, or to debug the current situation before resuming? I'd prefer to fix the problem with `fancontrol` before proceeding, since the previous `full-upgrade` was quite long-running.

FWIW I also recorded the packages that the previous/broken `aptitude full-upgrade` wanted to {add, remove, upgrade}, and note that package=`fancontrol` is one that `aptitude` wanted to upgrade. So I'd like to know if I should just

Configure unpacked-but-not-yet-configured packages as directed by `dpkg --audit` reconfigure only-half-configured packages as directed by `dpkg --audit` process triggers for packages awaiting processing of triggers as directed by `dpkg --audit` reinstall packages missing md5sums as directed by `dpkg --audit` create a list of packages to remove (from those listed in the previous upgrade) add `fancontrol` to that list run `sudo aptitude remove [list of packages]` from tty1 create a list of packages to add and upgrade (from those listed in the previous upgrade) delete `fancontrol` from that list run `sudo aptitude install [list of packages]` from tty1 rerun `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` from tty1 (hoping that cleans up any remaining upgrade work, and does not try to reinstall package=`fancontrol`)

Debian Hardware :: Nvidia GPU Overheating And The Fan Run At Very High Speed

Aug 15, 2015

Yesterday I've installed Debian 8.1.0 on my desktop pc. I'm using Nvidia GT 730. After booting, the GPU fan runs at very high speed and really gets overheated. I didn't install any drivers etc.

Is there a solution for this or do i have to switch to Intel/ATI to use Linux? I said Linux, because every distros i've installed makes Nvidia chipset overheated and the fan runs at max. speed.

I'm terrified about making the GPU burnt.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: NVIDIA Graphics Card Fan Speed Control?

Aug 13, 2011

I'm running openSUSE 11.4 with GNOME. I have an EVGA nvidia GTX 285 installed, which is equipped with a variable speed fan. I'm running the nvidia driver package which includes the nvidia X Server Settings utility. The utility allows me to view the fan speed as a percentage of its maximum speed but does not allow adjustment. It appears that the speed remains at the card default of 40% regardless of GPU or card temp. When running certain graphic-intensive applications my card runs quite hot (sometimes >70 degrees C). Although this isn't hot enough to burn the card up in the short term, it is certainly hot enough to shorten my video card's lifespan.

So, the question is how do I set up my system so I can increase the fan speed to 50% or better yet, get it to increase as the GPU temp increases? The nvidia X Server Settings help indicates that fan speed is adjustable after enabling coolbits, but coolbits is not installed on my system and is not available from the default repositories. What is the easiest way to obtain, install and enable coolbits? I have no intention of overclocking my card. It was too expensive to risk damage to the card.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVidia GTS250 Running Hot - Can't Change Fan Speed

Jun 28, 2010

I'm running a XFX Nvidia GTS 250 512MB card. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 and so far I'm loving it - apart from one small issue. Using 195.36.24 drivers, I cannot control the fan speed - it keeps running the card pretty hot - hitting 75 deg. C when one OpenGL game is running. The fan barely goes over 60% speed - I'd rather have it run at 80% constantly to keep the temps under control.

There are drivers on nvidia website which "seem" to be a lot newer : 256.35 (using 64bit Linux) - are those "direct replacement" for the 195.36 which Ubuntu installs by default?

I have a well ventilated case (1x120mm pulling air, 1x120mm pushing out, neat cabling, etc). I have found nvclock but no joy - even with -force it doesn't want to change fan speed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Obtain Gigabit Speed With Nvidia MCP79

Jul 27, 2011

I just bought a new router with gigabit ethernet.

However, my HTPC running Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) with a Zotac ION mainboard can't obtain gigabit speed. I have tested the cables by connecting my laptop and it gets gigabit speed. I also have a desktop computer that obtains gigabit speed in my network, this one with another Nvidia chipset and Linux Mint 11.

I have tried to boot the HTPC with Linux Mint 11 LiveCD, but it fails to get gigabit as well. I have also tried

Code:
sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000

but it does not succeed in chaingin the speed.

Is there anything I can do to get gigabit speed? I have all my files on the HTPC, so network speed is important!

Here's some info that might be useful:

Code:
christian@htpc:~$ dmesg | grep eth
[ 1.243230] forcedeth: Reverse Engineered nForce ethernet driver. Version 0.64.

Ubuntu :: NVidia GeForce 8500 GT - Get A Speed Boost And For A Dual Monitor Setup?

Jan 12, 2011

I have the nVidia GeForce 8500 GT 512MB graphics card, I put it in my system to get a speed boost and for a dual monitor setup, I don't have the proprietary drivers installed I tried installing them, and when I did it asked for reboot, so I did, and when it came back up only one monitor was in use, and it was running very very sluggish, so I opened up the Monitors from the settings and it said to use nVidia's thing, so when I did, I enabled the second monitor, and hit apply, and it asked for a restart of Xorg, doing that came back telling me that no monitors were find, and a reboot brings me straight to tty1... I tried both the recent version and the older one, both did the same thing, I really wanna get my Compiz effects back. is there a way to get this working? I will do anything you ask if it solves the problem...

This leads me to the conclusion that the problem lies with MC.

Debian Multimedia :: When Video Gets Rendered Into MP4 It Comes Out At Increased Speed

Jul 28, 2015

Using Openshot, flowblade, or Kdenlive, when video gets rendered into mp4, it comes out at increased speed, both audio and video (seems like double speed but could be a different ratio)

When I play the exported mp4 with VLC for example, it shows the proper video length, not shortened. The video plays at high speed and for the second half of the video it just shows the last frame of the video until it runs out of time.

I have used Openshot extensively and have never had this problem, so I installed all the other video editors I could, and the problem persists (pitivi has a dependency problem so I haven't been able to use it).

I have tried several video players as well, all doing the same (VLC and Smplayer)

I am running Debian stable jessie, 64 bit, xfce
