Debian :: Why Isn't Stable Release Of Package X Included In Lenny
Jun 30, 2011I have found some stable releases of packages I use which are included in Debian stable to be outdated.For example: I use Kdevelop. I absolutely love it. Checking Kdevelop.org says that latest stable release is 4.2.3.However on my system, the latest stable package found is 4.0.1 In my sources list I've selected to use only stable packages:
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

BTW, I assume this is how I only get stable packages ? Why is it that although there are newer stable releases of Kdevelop, the latest (stable) found on Debian is 4.0.1 ? Is there something I can do in order to include those newer stable releases, other than downloading the source from the wesbite and building/installing ? I really like the way Debian handles it's packages, and I understand that Debian has it's own ways of doing things.

Aug 18, 2010I am curious that if I change the sources list to include "stable" instead of "lenny" (for the Lenny release, for example) will my system upgrade to the Squeeze sources when Debian Squeeze becomes the new stable and Lenny is the oldstable? I'm brand-spanking-new to Debian and I love stability (for my workstation) but I also need a lot of features that are only available with some newer packages. I plan on having to compile a lot of packages from source but I would really like to be able to ignore making changes to my sources list. Will changing "lenny" to "stable" make this work?

Apr 15, 2010I am currently running debian Lenny on my desktop. I was wondering, what happens if your sources.list is set to stable as opposed to Lenny? Does it mean that it would update straight to Sqeeze when it is finished with testing and released as stable? Is it reccomended to have this "rolling update" or should I have my sources set to "Lenny" and then change it to Squeeze when it becomes stable?

Aug 29, 2015I just bought a Samsung 850 Pro 250GB SSD drive and have since then found out that Linux has/had a faulty implementation of queued trim (which is a synonym for NCQ I think). I'm using kernel 4.1.0 (the default selected by the Debian 8.1 installer) and I've read that Samsung drives are blacklisted for queued trim by the recent kernels. However, the output of dmesg contains the following lines, with and without TRIM enabled for the drive (i.e. with or without the "discard" option in fstab for the drive):

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4
Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Jul 25, 2015I'm looking for a way to launch "TRIM" commands to a SSD drive myself, from a c++ code I'm going to write, for flash erasing an SSD drive (and not to wait for others things that "should do it automatically in some circumstances if this or this, this and this have been enabled and [..]" but will never tell me if it worked or not
I know there is thousands of complicated ways to test and check if it worked, and also software that needs money to do so, that's why I just want to call myself the TRIM functions and read the return value (like true or false) in order to know if it worked !
Where I can find the c++ call that could permit me to do so ? I heard about the GLibC that gives a way to access every user space function related to Linux Kernel (poll, select and others) as standard c++ functions, I suppose that, if there is a way, it will be on the GLibC but how to find it ?

2. If it does not support KMS which kernel options should be passed to get it to work properly with the nouveau driver?
3. Ultimately I am looking for a tool that should be included in the installation screen that will:
a. identify your hardware: list the hardware detected on the screen
b. highlight with color code any hardware listed that is not supported or poorly supported: in this case graphics drivers
c. perform a quick benchmark test of your hardware: In this case I want the benchmark to tell me what capabilities my graphics card has.
d. automatically recommend and set the best kernel parameters for a successful boot: if the graphics card needs nomodeset or modeset=0 or whatever I want it to do it for me.

Jun 6, 2011I've been setting up a Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and have gotten most of the kinks worked out, except for the fact that the display has some annoying artifacts as you navigate around, I guess due to bad video support. A post [URL].. on the same machine said that upgrading all X packages to sid (unstable) fixed these problems, but those packages aren't available in stable.
I read another post (can't find the link now) that said Debian wasn't planning on backporting all the X packages, only related libraries and modules. And I don't know which ones specifically would fix the issues I'm having.
So I thought I'd ask what my options are. I could update all those to unstable, but that doesn't seem optimal (and in the future I don't want unstable bugs bringing down my whole X session). Is there a way to find out what I need and backport some myself. Or do I just need to wait until the appropriate packages filter down to stable (or at least backports)?

Aug 8, 2010I don't mean this to be in any way a critical post but I've recently switched to Debian from numerious other distros because of it elidged stability and speed. However I'm using the stable version and frequently have to reboot for certain things to work and frequently multimedia based programs crash on me. I've installed the repo from debian-multimedia.org so I don't know if that's causeing any problems. It crashes on me multiple times a day. Now it's not the OS itself which is the problem I'm sure but more the software in the repos. However it was my udnerstanding that this software was pretty darn well tested.

May 31, 2015I want to install Debian Stable 8 Jessie. I've tried the main website, of course, first. But there are a lot of options there to download Debian 8: CD, DVD, Live etc. I downloaded debian-live-8.0.0-amd64-lxde-desktop.iso and I booted live in VirtualBox. It boots fine and the operating system looks in order.
Questions/problems:
1. The desktop icon for the installer says "Install Debian sid". But from what I know "sid" is unstable version. I do not want unstable, nor testing. I just want normal Stable. Did I got the wrong version? The website is a bit confusing about which version is which.
2. How do I check the md5 of the iso? I know how to do that with other distros, they usually specify it near the download link and I can execute in terminal the command 'md5sum' followed by the specific linux distro iso and then compare the numbers. But I can find no such thing for Debian. I searched the website but could not find any clear info.
3. After I install, what should I do in order to make Iceweasel work with Flash and multimedia codecs? I also need Skype and the proprietary Nvidia drivers.
And if I enable these non free, do I get automatic updates for them like for the rest of standard Debian software? Or, if not, what should I do?
The idea is that I want a system that is as stable and bug free as possible, but I won't use many apps beyond these ones. I don't need the latest and greatest software as long as these get security updates. Should I be ok with this configuration?

May 25, 2011I am trying to keep a stable system (after a date with the unstable version which broke everything ) but a package (namely deluge) is horribly out-of-date. It is better in the unstable packages.I read the official documentation with the preferences file, pinning and the rest of the apt zoo but after a few tests I am still there with my old deluge in my stable environment.(in reality I managed to upgrade deluge by swapping the sources.list file with one with only the unstable repositories -- but this is not a particularly clever approach)I would be very grateful if someone could give me the right content for the preferences file which would allow to keep the system at stable level, except for the deluge package which should be updated to the newest, bleeding edge version.
