View 2 Replies View RelatedThis question is somewhat open ended, so I'll describe the specific issue, what I want to accomplish in general, and what I tried to do. It'd be a little long, but hopefully not too daunting.For quite a while my approach to multi-OS boots has been to install each OS to a separate disk. When I want to boot a specific OS I change the boot drive in the BIOS. I find this convenient for several reasons, but mostly because I don't get boot manager conflicts. If I remove a disk or change the OS on it, this doesn't affect the booting of other OS's.
Note that when I say multi-OS, this meant until now multiple versions of Windows. I've occasionally tried some linux distros on VirtualBox, but now I want to do a full install, and see if I can use it as a main OS. (What prompted this was the recent release of Wine 1.2 and the fact that my new job doesn't involve any Direct3D or DDI work. I've always been partial to the open source movement, but I'm also fine with Windows and never before felt I could make the move without losing key abilities). My plan was (still is, if I can get it to work) to use Linux for everyday e-mail, web browsing and such, play Windows games over Wine, and install Windows 7 in VirtualBox for Windows development.I currently have two disks, one with my main Vista x64 installation, and the other with a Vista x86 installation which I used for my previous job and I no longer need. This is the disk I want to use for the Linux installation. It has a lot of partitions but quite a bit of free space (since I copied a 80GB disk and 250GB disk into a 500GB disk and haven't taken advantage of the extra space).My first choice of distro was Linux Mint, since it's known to be friendly to new users, and I like the software installer on it. I installed Linux Mint in the past in VirtualBox, and the latest version also installed fine, and I found installation instructions explaining how to provide my own partitions, but the installation failed during the "configuring hardware" stage. If you're interested, more details are available in this thread on the Linux Mint forums. I didn't get any reply to that thread.
I thought then that I'd try openSUSE 11.3. The live CD looked usable enough, but when I tried to install I couldn't tell how to make sure that I don't get a boot manager which will try to give me access to the Windows versions on the disks. I don't want this, and what I'm really afraid of is that an install will screw the booting of Vista x64 on the other disk (which, granted, I can disconnect for the install, but I'd rather not). At that point I decided to post a question here.So hopefully you understand what I want to achieve. I don't much care which Linux distro I install, but I'd rather have one which gives me as much usability out of the box (or easily installable) as possible.
i have an old copy machine (canon gp225). the hard disk makes a whistling noise and i suppose it is just a question of time when it will bust.i do have some stone-aged computers here and i think i could use one of this hard disks as a replacement.how do i get the operating system (probably unix/linux or similar) plus the content of the boot sector plus the software on this new hard disk? i think if i could do a one-to-one copy i might have a chance that i could replace the old hard disk and it will work.

I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?

How do I copy the data from HD to USB? dd is obviously not the right option since the HD is 320GB and the USB stick only 16GB. However, only 3.5GB are used so this makes perfect sense.And it would make my HTPC even more silent |-)

The installation screen appears, the acknowledgement screen appears, then the installation checks my system and gives me a yast window with an error about something related to URLs and repositories. I cannot continue with the installation.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m. I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files). Of course this is a
-first-find the *.m files script and
-then copy the files into the hard disk.
What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk. As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has.
I have a broken DVD drive and no others available right now to burn a DVD iso to so I'd like to use a empty hard disk instead.
I've tried Unetbootin but that only copies a few megabytes of files - the rest of the image data in the ISO is ignored.
I have verified the ISO is valid and working with VirtualBox. It's MD5 hash is also as expected. But I need to boot at the real bios not an emulated one.
I've also tried things like:
sudo cat /disk/image.iso > /dev/sdb1
and that got "Permission denied" -
I plan to reformat & reinstall my linux (centos).Before doing this, I got to backup my files into my USB external hard disk from Seagate (FreeAgent). I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". View 7 Replies View RelatedDebian and debian based distros issue has a issue that has come to make it self aware to me when I was trying to burn a video on my hard drive with braseo and it won't let me burn more than 4.4 gigs to a dvd with 4.7 gigs of free space even a file that is over the 4.4 gig limit by a megabyte with windows i didn't have this problem. One more thing I have 16 gig flash drive and on debian and debian based distros i can only use 13.1 gigs of it but on fedora I can use all 16 gigs.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have this project going where I want to have a ton of tiny Virtual Machines running in a simulated network on a single host computer. The various virtual machines will serve a broad variety of purposes, but they will all be very small virtual machines (low-memory, no X11) and will usually only have one or two additional applications installed on each of them aside from the base system.
So, what I want is a super-lightweight Linux distro that provides only a simple base system (no package management needed, or even compiling tools) which I can clone and modify slightly for each machine's purpose.ttylinux seemed like a promising option. The downside I found, though, is that the ttylinux install uses ext2, so every time a system shuts down improperly, I end up losing 10+ files to lost+found.
If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.
I installed an OS on the second hard-disk/partition3 (/dev/sdb3; OS was FreeBSD). Added the entry and when i boot: nothing. I choose the OS from grub's menu, the list of choices vanishes, the background image stays, and there it hangs. It hangs until i hit: ctrl+alt+backspace. I have thought: to hell with it, and installed Debian/Lenny. Same problem (OH!).
I also installed the boot-loader to the second disk (/dev/sdb), hit F11 after the BIOS-screen and chosen the second hard-disk to boot from: a similar problem. It hangs, and the keyboard is "dead". I am clueless what to check for (i checked the general culprits, but with UUID its all a bit of a mess. I would say it looks good, but wouldn't bet on it) Anyone ever heard of something like that? Without error message its not easy to use the amazing Google. I do a bit of grub-troubleshooting, usually it works, but usually i get error-messages.

I am trying a network install of debian 6.0 by dumping the contents of a DVD onto my local http server. For some reason the Western Digital 80 GB pata HDD doesn't get detected when I click on 'detect disk', I even tried with a SATA, no luck.
