Debian :: Flash Crashes Iceweasel (x86_64)
Jun 3, 2011
Iceweasel now crashes (closes altogether) if I try to play embedded flash video (64bit Debian testing). My wife runs stable Debian so I copied her cached iceweasel (iceweasel_3.5.16-7_amd64.deb) and downgraded my own and put it on hold and the video all works again. Are others having this problem?I have just tried embedded video on Archlinux Firefox 4.0.1 and it works fine...now I'm really confused!

I have Iceweasel 38.6.0 on Jessie 8.3, and it seems to crash more or less randomly. It just suddenly disappears, and when restarted, it gives that "embarrasing"- thing. The pages reopen fine and it may take a day between crashes, or about an hour.
Where should I look for the reason of the crashing? Is there a log file or something somewhere?
My machine is old StinkBad T400. I'm using Cinnamon.

I installed Squeeze on an eeepc 900.Everything seems to work well, except for one thing: iceweasel, when drawing certain windows, likes to crash the entire KDE session. This is 100% replicable simply by right-clicking on a bookmark put on the bookmarks menu toolbar, and trying to go to "properites" on that item. It only does this, however, on my wife's eeepc 900, it does not happen on my 900A (different gpu and cpu though...). the two systems have the same packages installed.
The most frustrating thing is that there is no error output whatsoever. I have looked through all the logs in /var/log, and I couldn't find anything. I have run iceweasel from the command line and redirected its output to a file, but the whole system hard-locked, and when I rebooted, there was no log file. I have started X using "startx" instead of using kdm, and I cannot see any output to the VT that kicked it off because the system hard-locks.
As far as I can see, it only happens in iceweasel. If I disable compositing, it becomes stable again -- but I don't want to have to do this, as it interferes with features she is accustomed to.Oh yes, I should also add that this netbook worked fine under eeebuntu and compiz -- never an issue.

I've upgraded from stable to testing. In stable, iceweasel performed flawlessly as I expected. Now it crashes at random times at an alarming rate.It does seem that I can recreate the crash to an extent on ....., where crashes are the most prevalent.I haven't located any bug reports regarding this issue with wheezy iceweasel.

A recent update to Iceweasel 5 (version 5.0-6 ) on my debian (Linux xxxxx 3.0.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jul 24 02:24:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux) led to a rather odd an annoying behavior. Each time I try to open an external file (pdf, odt) or to save a file on the hard drive, then Iceweasel crashes systematically. Does anyone experience the same? Any idea of how to fix this?

Using Debian Lenny Ice Weasel was crashing when I try to use the full screen in you tube videos, and sometimes I get logged out of Debian. And now when I try to watch a video it tells me I need to update flashplayer. How do I update flashplayer in Lenny. I tried this and I don't have the program installed. Do I need to add the backports to my sources.list first. Appreciate help in fixing this problem.

I just got a new pc after my two pc's decided to die. I have had them for many years, maybe around 2001. So, I am new to this 64 bit OS. I'm running squeeze amd64. I am having some troubles with flash in Iceweasel. It just stopped working one day. So, I downloaded Firefox to see if flash would work in it. Here's the interesting thing. Iceweasel will play flash. I will close the browser and reopen to discover it no longer wants to play flash. I'll open Firefox, then close it. I'll then open Iceweasel and Flash will work in Iceweasel again.
This happens often. To get Flash to work, I just close Iceweasel, open Firefox, close Firefox, open Iceweasel and go to a flash site and all is good. Is there something I can do to get Flash to always work without opening Firefox?

After using testing (now Wheezy) for almost a year and breaking my machine (latest nvidia broken packages), I went back to vanilla Squeeze (after updates, now at 6.02).Nothing from outside the stable repos; not even the nvidia driver (kept it at default and nouveau)Repo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main non-free" enabled. It seems flash is not working with iceweasel; I either have a message which says "Cannot play media: you do not have the correct version of the flash player. Download the correct version," with a link to Adobe's site, of media appears in broken pieces. In order to keep my system "clean," I haven't downloaded anything from Adobe, and a search on this forum suggested installing flashplugin-nonfree or flashplayer-mozilla. Did both (can't have them at the same time), restarted, no joy.
~$ apt-cache policy flashplayer-mozilla
flashplayer-mozilla:
Installed: 2:10.3.181.26-0.1

After some time using Lenny I have turned back to Debian 4, Etch, which is more convenient for me because of OpenOffice and other points. But now I need the Adobe-Flash add-on. It is possible to find older versions of Flash in internet, for Windows or Mac for instance, but not the .deb package I would like to have for Debian Etch.

i am a proud newbie user of debian linux. the desktop i use is xfce. i have iceweasel as the web browser. it cannot access flash content like videos videos and some others because the adobe flash plugin is not installed. i've done the following without success. i downloaded flash_player_10_linux.tar from adobe's site, unpacked it to get libflashplayer.so. but under /usr/lib/iceweasel, there is no plugins folder to put it in. there is, however, a broken link called plugins. then i created a plugins folder under home/myaccount/.mozilla and pasted the libflashplayer.so file over there. i restarted iceweasel, but it cannot still detect flash content.
then i ran apt-get install of jre and downloaded all java packages. however, while installation it gave an error saying, "cannot overwrite iceweasel/plugins". this came most probably because as mentioned earlier there is no plugins folder under iceweasel to begin with. on running the about : plugins command, i get "no plugins installed". i then deleted the plugins folder from .mozilla and directly pasted the libflashplayer.so file under usr/lib/iceweasel (since it contained many other .so files). how to enable iceweasel to enable the adobe flashplayer plugin.

You may know that there was a security release for Adobe Flash Plugin for Linux x86 but not for x86_64. There has been a development:
See : http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
It works fine here. I have a Multilib Slack 13.1 stable.

I'm having an issue where the proprietary nvidia driver seems to crash my system. the weird thing is that it only happens if i have already started an X session. here is what i mean. i don't use a display manager so i invoke X by running startx. now if i run it for the first time it starts no problem. but if i kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace and then try to run startx again it just hangs and the machine completely freezes up. this only happens with the proprietary nvidia driver. if i use the vesa driver it works fine. the open-source nvidia driver doesn't seem to support my card: GeForce GT220. i never had this problem with slackware 13 x86. i have tried using the 190.42 version from slackbuilds.org as well as the latest version from nvidia's site 190.53. aside from this problem it seems to work fine otherwise.

I have barebones Debian Lenny, with bare bones Gnome Desktop. I'm using IceWeasel for a browser. I have downloaded the file install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz. from the Adobe website. I have unpacked (I guess) the file using the command
tar -zxvpf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
Now according to the instructions at Adobe - Flash Player 10: Installation instructions
It should be unpacked to a directory with an installer that can be run, but all I get is a single file called libflashplayer.so, and I haven't a clue what to do with it. .so is like a .dll file I guess. IceWeasel has a built in service that installs plugins, but this failed with flash.

I had quite a bit of trouble getting OSS4.2 and flash to have sound on x86_64 fedora 11. I had been using the Adobe repository which is 32bit. Adobe labs distributes a 64 bit version, and I notice now that Leigh has packaged it for fedora. Switching to the 64bit flash plugin brought back sound in flash for me. Just wanted anyone else wanting to try OSS4.2, to know how to get sound in flash.

i was having severe problems under slackware64-current with the adobe flash player plugin for firefox. browsing and watching videos on videos was a pain in the neck with the player crashing when opening a couple of tabs, and constant lockups for several seconds while the plugin wrapper that was running it was taking one cpu core for itself.
it seems the problem stems from a recent change in glibc that modified the memcpy implementation and caused a bit of havok in some packages. i'm guessing it's the same change (or a similar one) that caused problems with sysklogd and iptraf, among others, with strcpy and overlapping strings. remember the patches:
[url]
[url]
strictly speaking, those are problems in the program source code, but most people seem to think it's a bad idea to provide a memcpy that doesn't work for overlapping strings. a bit of discussion can be found here, with a few priceless comments by torvalds:
[url]
it seems the source code for the flash player plugin probably contains this bug, as manually modifying the libflashplayer.so binary to replace memcpy calls with memmove calls fixes the problems. at least it clearly did for me.
a quick recipe can be extracted from that bugzilla entry and one of its attachments.
for example:
code:
that should modify the binary in place provided it's located at ~/.mozilla/plugins. the resulting binary is not distributable but the recipe is.

I've recently set up ubuntu 9.1 via virtualbox and am having some issues getting things startedFirst issue is when I boot up the virtual machine a warning box pops up saying virtualbox is optimized for 32 bit color and the OS is running 16 bit color. Some google searches revealed that for linux 24 bit color is what I want, but most suggested I edit the xorg.conf file to 24 bit depth. Problem is when I try to open that file it's blank. Further reading seemed to indicate that the most recent versions of ubuntu no longer use the xorg.conf file, so how would I go about switching from 16 bit to 24 bit color? Not a major issue but still annoying.
