Debian Configuration :: How To Swap CapsLock & Control Keys

On my Debian machine I have no InterNet connection.
Hardware: --
HP Pavilion DV8000 laptop,
-- 2GHz AMD Turion CPU,
-- 4 gb ram,
-- 150 gb hd,
-- (non-working non-free) BroadCom BMC-4318 wireless chip
OS:
-- Debian 6.0.1a, "Squeeeeeeeze"
-- KDE (soon to be replaced with LXDE, much sweeter and cooler apps).
Here's da problem...(thanks to stinky 1983 Macro$haft & IBM collusion to wipeout WordStar), how do I swap CapsLock & Control keys?Its gotta work in both terminal & X apps
I don't care if this is done in the bios or a kernel module or software. Is there any way at all to do make the 'fn' key act as 'control' and the 'control' key act as 'fn' in linux running on a macbook pro?
PS. You can do this with software in OSX with the application KeyRemap4MacBook.
I added as an experiment a swapfile , see topic Put an extra line in fstab to activate swapfile during boot.When I reboot a bootmessage is shown : activating lvm and md swap....Result is that bootime is lengthened by 10 seconds....dmesg shows four lines containing " firewire_ohci: swap not done yet "I don't use firewire, should I blacklist modules ?What about " activating lvm " in the bootmessage ? I don't use lvm.Update : just found out that dmesg contains the same lines " firewire_ohci: swap not done yet " when swapfile is not enabled. Without swapfile boottime is normal : grub -> kdm in 17 seconds.
I've lenny on my PC with no X-server running up and I need to swap Caps_Lock for ctrl .None of the Debian-specific ways from the link I provided are working for me.
So from a web server stand point if we start using swap for httpd or mysql its bad and performance goes down the drain. So would it be a good or bad idea to disable swap entirely?
apt-get suggetsed I should remove some packages I was no longer using. I've read the threads that explain this, but unfortunately I did that just now, not when I actually ran the damn command. I must say, however, that there were lots of things I wasn't actually using, so it was useful in a way. But there is a problem:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and to get my sound keys working (the mute, volume up and volume down keys) I had to go to Settings-->Regional & Accessibility-->Keyboard Layout and there in Keyboard model I chose the option Dell Laptop/Notebook Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx. I know that's not exactly my model, but that made my sound keys work fine. Well, since I did the autoremove thing, that stopped working. I haven't got a clue what library was being used to get the sound keys working.
A friend gave me an HP Mini 110 that I can actually use in some situations. I installed Debian 8 with LXDE. It runs well except for the expected lack of driver for the Broadcom 4312 wireless chip. I installed wl using the method shown at [URL] ....
It works fine except that it takes very long to set up WiFi at boot (1 min 30 sec or more every boot--this is a rather frail Atom processor) and the WiFi reception seems poor (65% from an excellent router at 25 feet).
I'm thinking of getting a Panda 300Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter (reportedly using the Ralink RT5372 chipset) and removing the Broadcom driver. I have 2 questions:
1. Could I expect the Panda not to slow my boot time so much? I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell whether there is stable kernel support of this device, although the manufacturer says repeatedly that it works with most Linux distributions.
2. To remove wl is Code: Select allmodprobe -r wl the correct approach?
I'm running Debian testing/unstable, with my swap on an lvm volume. When I boot into the system, the swap doesn't become activated, even though there are messages that point to the contrary (for instance: "activating swap file...done"). After it's done booting, I run the command "free" and it shows that there is no space allocated to swap. "swapon -a" doesn't load the swap file either -- I have to do "swapon /dev/mapper/xxx-xxx". The swap appears in fstab, and also in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume.
This laptop that I am trying to get Debian 5 working on is occasionally locking up during boot at "Activating Swap..." WTF could cause such a bizarre thing? The swap partition is just empty space. Activating must be nothing more than confirming it exists and mounting it.
I understand that some of them may work only with Xorg (e.g. toggle screens), but screen and kbd backlight and volume may work at tty too (because I can change this from tty when xorg is down). I know how to do it all from the console, but I want to bind keys with actions.
E.g. I can change kbd backlight with dbus and attach this action to key in my wm config, but it is not what I want. I want to make it global. I don’t understand which layer may provide the functionality for all users. Now only two keys works as I expect: toggle wifi and toggle touchpad. I haven’t set it up, it works out of the box.

I'm having trouble with my keyboard functions on my netbook (eeePC 1005HA running squeeze/sid - specific build being the one available on December 23rd 2009 - hasn't been updated since installation) - specifically, some of the function keys seem to be off - i.e. when pressing Fn+key, only some actually work. The specific ones I'm having trouble with are: Fn+F10 (mute)Fn+F11 (vol. down)Fn+F12 (vol. up)
As far as I can remember, they've never worked; at first I thought it wouldn't be an issue for me, having the volume panel, but the more time goes on, the more annoying it's becoming. Also, as it was a M$ machine at purchase, it has a Windoze key on it, which I'd like to configure to actually do something useful - preferably to open the main menu, if possible - but have so far failed to find any guides on how to do it. (Have Googled on multiple occasions, to no avail.)
I'm having a weird problem with my keyboard. I have to hold on to the key that I want typed for about 1 whole second for it to be entered... the mouse click is okay, it's just the keyboard.Here's a rough outline of what happened, and the significants events that took place on the desktop that this is happening on.The computer originally had Debian Lenny on it. At some point of time, I just started getting everything from backports... and after some things and hops later, the computer does in fact report having Debian 6.0.Anyway - I again did an upgrade... and now the problem occurs.
The top row of keys on my notebook are currently assigned to various media functions (brightness, volume, play, stop, etc.) These keys are rarely used, and it would be better if they were assigned to the function keys (f1,f2,f3,...) by default, rather then using the fn key to access them. Locking the fn key down is not an option. What can I do?
I've got a PC with a really noisy fan and suspect that most of the time my PC isn't warm enough to need it. I'm using xfce as my desktop, is it possible to do some sort of hddtemp thing and just have my fan come on when it is needed?
Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer.They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update. I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. Is anyone else experiencing this?I can adjust the volume with Kmix 3.5 or GNOME Volume Control V2.1
I'm trying to control access to different services on an Debian server using /etc/group. So that a user I create for FTP usage doesn't fill up my server with IMAP folders or samba garbage.
Services like proftpd have:
AllowGroup ftpgroup
sshd have
AllowGroups sshgroup
And samba have
valid users = @smbgroup
But I can't find the correct option in Dovecot (/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) Do anyone have the magic option or a workaround thats doesn't envolve maintaining seperate user databases and password?
For some reason I cannot figure out, xscreensaver does not have permission to control my screen. It's present in memory, so the settings app thinking it is not present and asking if I want to start it is odd. Could the the necessity of using VESA BIOS controls to get around bugs in the VIA/S3/Unichrome chipset be the source of the problem? Are there other Linux screensavers that might work differently and might still be able to blank my screen?
I have a Mac keyboard where the Alt/Win (i.e. Option/Command) keys are inverted compared to a regular PC keyboard, and I'd like to swap them. I haven't had any luck with xmodmap so far. The standard configuration is as follows:
My laptop fan sensor shows fine in psensor in sid. But today I downgrade to jessie and sensor for fan gone. I check if fancontrol is running but I can not manage to make it work

This is an Asus laptop with controllable fan. I am not sure if fan is running by Bios, and how it might run. But I feel the laptop seem quieter and at higher temperature than it was under sid.
how do we control the display color quality in Debian, similar to setting 16 bit or 32 bit in Windows? I have Lenny on a notebook and Squeeze on a netbook, but cannot find a menu to set it. They both have the default vesa driver.
I've gotten VNC setup and working well on our LAN. The next step we want to do is making it acessible from the web, so we can remotely do things with the office files.Unfortunately, I have no idea how to go about this.Our current setup is a router which connects to the phone line, and into which other devices are connected. We're in one room of a big office building which may complicate matters somewhat.Can anyone provide a bit of general info on this topic. how can i control vlc via the keys above my keyboard(my english sucks and i have no idea what they are called, meta keys? multimedia keys? whatever)only MPlayer responds to them, not vlci opened vlc preferences window and in hotkeys page, i wanted to add the "PLAY KEY" to "PLAY/PAUSE" but it wouldn't even recognize the keys, nothing happens when i press them, but it would recognize something else ,like
I am using Samsung N150 and ubuntu 10.10 is installed in it. There is problem with brightness control i.e., I cannot control my brightness by up & down keys. I made settings such as:

Also I made changes in brightness setting in during the boot i.e set to user control instead of automatic. But after doing all these stuff still my laptop brightness not control by fn + up/down keys.
control keys aren't working most of the time in Open Office. I can copy, cut and paste with the mouse, but Control+C/X/V/Z is not working at all. I also use intellij idea, there I have the same problem, but I can use its own defined control+alt+space. I've tried Abiword, the control keys worked at the begging but then after a while when I used control+something(C/X/V/Z), it always selected everything. Besides that, the control keys are working perfectly in nautilus, terminal, firefox, chrome, gedit. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
I have a testing application, under which I need to disable Ctrl-x and Few other keys...
My Problem is If i disable Ctrl Key using xmodmap command..All the other Ctrl combination are getting disabled...For ex: Ctrl-s, Ctrl-a etc..My goal is to enable some combination of Ctrl key and disabling some combination of Ctrl key..
My emacs 23 is running on Ubuntu 10.04 and I am very a emacs primer. in virtual terminals, how can I remap keys to swap the right alt key and the right ctrl key automatically every time the machine starts up? But how to swap Alt and Ctrl on the right side?
I was just wondering if there is any program/script/code/trick/way to get the arrow keys to control the mouse pointer and, well basically, the keyboard to do stuff you would do with the mouse..?
And i know about keyboard shortccuts
