Debian Configuration :: PasswordAuthentication In Openssh And Freenx?
May 31, 2011
I have VNC working but I like how freenx starts in it's own session. It is handy for when my account is not logged into the server and VNC hasn't started.I have freenx working but it requires sshd_config to enable PasswordAuthentication. This isn't a major security problem at the moment since I have deny.hosts running but I still don't like it enabled. I would much rather only use the keys.

I have an old computer a friend of mine found in a dumpster, and I've decided to use it as a file server. After finally getting it to connect to my wifi network, I tried connecting to it via OpenSSH on my main desktop. After I connected, I noticed OpenSSH was being very laggy. Whenever I type anything in there's a very noticable and annoying delay from when I type it to when it appears on screen. Now, a while ago a friend of mine was helping me fix my laptop when fglrx drivers broke x, and I set up openssh on there so he could access it. According to him, there was no lag (and he's half-way across the globe, whereas my file server is in the other room). The computer is an old Pentium 4 with one and a half gigs of RAM, two hard drives (one I use for the os/swapping and the other I use for /home). It's connected to wifi via a spare USB Linksys 802.11 bg adaptor I found lying around, and it's using the default drivers that come with Debian to connect.

I have a Debian VPS running Lenny and I'm trying to setup a way to run remote desktop sessions from it. I went with FreeNX, NX client for windows from nomachine, XDM and xfce4. All seems to have installed well, but I can't start an NX session on my box. I can connect to the server and authenticate, but the client hangs on "Downloading the session information," eventually timing out. The log output is below - I'm not even seeing an error message. Any ideas?
[Code]...
The only thing I noticed during install, which was about 400 packages since this was a barebones VPS, was that I should consider recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y. I don't know if this has any impact on session information, however, since this is a new session, not one I'm trying to resume.

So this very (for me) important little package fails me once again. But this time it refuses to restart/start
This is the output:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.3p1:-1)
Restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell Server: sshd: failed!
/dev/null is not a character device!
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.
[Code].....
The error is within the /etc/init.d/ssh script. ("error")
This is in squeeze so I can only blame my self, but.. This is one of the packages that fair and square should not fail to install/update/start/restart no mather what!

On a Debian 5.0.8 I have a problem with OpenSSH server (sshd): when connecting to it from another host there is always a 10 seconds delay before sshd gives login prompt to the client. After the connection is established the communication goes on without any interruption. This long delay started to happen a few months ago and sshd_config was not changed at that time.
Here is a short description of the conversation between the putty client (on MS Windows) and sshd:
- putty client starts connection to sshd
- 10 s delay
- sshd returns "login as:"
- user types username in putty window
- sshd returns "password:"
- user types password in putty window
- sshd returns MotD and shell prompt
Here is a short description of the conversation between the OpenSSH client (on a Debian 6) and sshd:
- client does "ssh user@host.foo.bar"
- 10 s delay
- sshd returns "Password:"
- user types password
- sshd returns MotD and shell prompt
I tried connecting from:
- local host - NO DELAY
- a host on the same subnet - delay exists
- a host on another subnet - delay exists
I've found the following suggestions but to no avail (of course I restarted sshd after changing its configuration):
- on server put "UseDNS no" at the end of /etc/ssh/sshd_config
- in /etc/hosts on the server define mappings between IP addresses and host names for the ssh clients
- on client use "GSSAPIAuthentication no" in /etc/ssh/ssh_config
Here are some logs and configurations:

I'm in need of a bit of assistance from you Debian users. I have two servers that I thought were identical installations, both running Debian Lenny. Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. I'm getting the following message:
Code:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.5p1-4) ...
Auto configuration failed
2524:error:0E079065:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD_BIO:missing equal sign:conf_def.c:366:line 67
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.
[Code].....
It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.

Also, I would like users to authenticate against using LDAP rather having created manually in the NX server. I installed using yum install freenx nx and rename the node.conf.sample to node.conf and installed the windows client. but when I am trying to conenct the nx server it says it is connected but it gives me NX> 202 Authenticating user: nxNX> 208 Using auth method: publickeyNX> 204 Authentication failed.I have change this nx user in sshd_config file to user that i created using nx server command which exists in local machine.

I just setup Ubuntu 10.04, and immediately installed OpenSSH using synaptic. I edited the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file e.g. no password authentication, non-standard port, etc. Using /etc/init.d/ssh restart I restarted the daemon, and everything worked perfectly. However, now it's almost like there is a lock on my service somehow. I edited the config file and added "PrintMotd no" and "Banner none". I killed all my active ssh sessions, restarted, and still saw the motd and the banner.
I then tried sudo /etc/init.d/ssh stop. The script reported ok, but netstat reported sshd as still listening on the port I had defined. I could still login. At this point, I don't know what else to do. I have tried looking at auth.log, I don't see anything funny there. I tried rebooting, and the config changes are (apparently) not loaded, I still see the motd upon ssh login. This is a totally clean system so I don't know what I am doing improperly.

When I connect with my vps server through openssh, doesn't establish connection. Openssh is active (see its status), port 22 is open, the sshd_config file is the same of original copy (I have saved one in the case I did a mistake) the only line different permitrootpassword is set on ''no'', there isn't a firewall that block ssh connection and with other remote desktop control like remmina works well.

I would like to recompile the openssh-server with a different version string. I download and compile the source, but so far I have only been able to compile and run the client. Not the server.
Steps taken:
Is there a flag or option I need to specify to insure that it creates the sshd?

I have two Debian 5 servers which running on both the same version of OpenSSH (5.1p1) and OpenSSL (0.9.8g).
One week ago, I set ssh keys on both of them and create the file "authorized_keys". I was able to connect on each server via SSH without password (which is the purpose of ssh keys) but I had an issue with the SSH service and I had to restart one of my server. And since this time, when I try to connect to my other server with the same ssh command, the command ask me to type the password...
This is the result of the ssh command (with the argument -v):
Code:
OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-5, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to MY_SERVER [1.2.3.4] port 22.

I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".
It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.
My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

I have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)

I am using Squessze and Gnome. When I try to use the gui System>Administration>Network or Users and Groups I get the error The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.

I am working on a Debian 2.6.26-19 Distribution with exim4 as MTA. After a system restart a problem occurred with delivering emails to local addresses. These local addresses use a 1and1 mailserver for email. The MX records for the local domain are set correctly but exim does not use a DNS lookup for these addresses because it identifies them as local addresses. I figured this out by executing the exim4 -d -bt command. The dns lookup part of the result looks like this (I replaced the actual address with placeholders):
[Code]....
The eventual result of the exim4 -d -bt command is: [user]@[domain.ext] is undeliverable: Unrouteable address How can I make sure, that exim4 makes a DNS lookup for the local addresses instead of skipping it? I know that I have to edit a exim4 configuration file, but I could not figure out which and how.

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I'm having some trouble with FreeNX on OpenSuse 11.2. I followed the instructions on this page to set up the server on my linux machine, and I'm connecting to it with the Nomachine client for Windows, running on Windows XP x64. It refuses to complete the connection, and the console log from the NX client is as follows code...
I've searched this forum and many web pages on google, but I haven't found anyone with this exact problem. the fact that it can't stat those files suggests to me that it might be a permissions thing, but I wouldn't expect non-root users to EVER have permission to files in any subdirectory of /var, so I sincerely doubt that they would release a program that requires read/write access to such files, and therefore, I am pretty certain it's a configuration issue, although I'm not experienced enough with the NX server to know where to start looking for the failure. Previous attempts with FreeNX and opensuse 10.3 (I am testing 11.2 for a possible upgrade of all of our linux systems here at my office) yielded totally successful results. the fact that there is no NX server included in the DVD distribution of 11.2 seems a little strange to me, as it was included with 10.3, but this is of little significance compared to my real issues.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and I've set up FreeNX server on it. I use the Nomachine client for Windows to log into my home computer while I'm at work. The other day I tried opening Chrome browser and nothing happened. So I clicked it a few more times and nothing. So I went ahead and just used Firefox. When I got home that day I physically went to the computer and woke it up and about 20 Chrome windows were open. So it looks like Chrome is launching in the wrong session. I'm logged in locally and through NX with the same user. Should I create a different user to log into the machine locally? Is there some way to bring these open windows over to my remote session? A couple more things... the first time this happened I had opened Chrome locally and left it open. Also Dropbox does this as well. And locally there is an icon in the top notifications for Dropbox but not on my remote session. So I'm thinking if an app is already running locally can I not open a new instance on my remote session?
