Jul 15, 2010I'm trying to search through some pdf files and I'm doing so by converting them to text files using pdftotext which is fine but I'm trying to get the number of occurrences in a paragraph of different words and it's adding a new line character at what it thinks is the right hand margin. I'm trying to remove all these singe new line characters but keep the doubles and I can't seem to work it out. i.e.

Mar 8, 2010Does anyone know if I can successfully remove / delete the 'debian-sys-maint' account from MySQL? I noticed it there and appears to be something the Debian developers / maintainers of MySQL package added. I am guessing it's there to manage package updates and system maintenance as a back door of sorts. Anyone know if I can remove this account and not break the package or database?

Sep 18, 2011I have a directory (Linux user) with a number of files which contain an added [!] to the end of each file name so that each file reads out as:
foo something [!].zip
bar something [!].zip
helloworld [!].zip
etc.
What is the quickest way to batch rename these to remove the ending [!] character combination from these file names?

I was checking out both NTFS CONFIGURATION TOOL and MOUNTMANAGER. I Removed MOUNTMANAGER but the multiple listings remain? I would like to have the ability to Mount and Unmount any drive from the File Manager except ARCHIVE this drive I need to mount as Ubuntu Boots up.

Ubuntu :: Can't Remove Extra Entries From GRUB 2 Menu?
Jun 6, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 dual booted with Windows XP. Ever since I installed 9.10, I get a long list of OS's (actually, multiple repeats of what appears to be the same Ubuntu install), and I can't get rid of them.I've looked through various tutorials and the GRUB 2 Community documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) but I still can't get rid of the menu items.I edited the 40_custom file and was able to add the entries I wanted to see, and then chmoded 644 all the other files in the /etc/grub.d directory and run update-grub.The custom entries do appear at the end of the menu now, but the old entries are still there as well. This is what I get when I run the update-grub:

Some of these seem like duplicates. This may be due to multiple attempts to build the volumes. Is there a way to determine if all of the are useful?
Debian Configuration :: Apt Wants To Remove Make?
Oct 18, 2010For some reason from a fresh installation on Debian (Squeeze), Apt is telling me I no longer need the 'make' package and I can remove it. I find this extremely odd & random given I just built this O.S. Why would Debian want to remove such a package and since this is a fresh installation, is there something I did wrong?

Aug 10, 2015The apt-get autoremove command, I use Debian 8 for some time now and I often install a package, test it for some minutes and remove it then. I noticed that in most cases (if not all, I'm not completely sure) all the dependencies that were installed with the package (mostly libraries, of course) stay installed on the system when I remove the package.
And there is no output of apt-get that there are unnecessary pacakges which I can remove with apt-get autoremove. The autoremove command does nothing.Before I changed to Debian, I used Ubuntu and there all the dependencies are removed with apt-get autoremove when I uninstalled a package.My question is now, is this normal? if there are fundamental differences in which packages "autoremove" removes between Debian and Ubuntu?

Feb 7, 2016I am using Wheezy 7.9, Gnome Classic, gdm3 . I have two menu instances of Master PDF Editor, one instance in the Graphics menu and the other in the Office category. I have tried using Alacarte to remove one of the instances. Alacarte shows that the item has been removed but in fact it still shows up in the menu. The procedure I used was to open Alacarte as root user, delete the item, close Alacarte and re-start the computer.

I usually do not use this program for installing, etc., if I can help it, but do use it more often for web address reference when I am considering installing a new program, etc. Question is,is there some way to find out if it is merely lurking somewhere in my system... & then to once again add it to my menu list? Or, if that is not the case, to reinstall it via apt-get, aptitude, or some way like this? I could not find this application (or whatever it is called) in the Synaptic Package Manager.

Sep 3, 2010I had read that squeeze was to use upstart instead of sysvinit. Anyway, in playing with splashy, I decided to install upstart to see if it would work, which it does just fine. When I check for updates in synaptic, it always wants to remove upstart in favour of sysvinit. I wouldn't have a problem with that except, with sysvinit, squeeze no longer shuts down or starts up.

Aug 7, 2011I have this package dependency question for a while. I have brand new Squeeze system. I selected desktop during installation. Gnome is default system but I turned off gdm3 and uses fluxbox as window manager. I understand if two packages are tied together funtionally so that removal of either package terminates one feature. Above cases, many small packages only depends on the core packages. The core packages work fine without games, other programs.
There are so many programs that I want to remove in the system. For examples, ekiga is a VoIP program that I never use it. When I tried to remove it using apt-get or aptitude, it suggests entire gnome packages will be removed also, which is illogical. The only solution I found is I need to manually remove the package files. I haven't tried it yet.

Aug 13, 2011VirtualBox is awesome tool for experiment and learning Linux.On the Linux guest OS, I installed standard system without Xorg.i expected it remove all the packages that come along with gnome-terminal previously.Only gnome-terminal was removed, 750kB free space. Now the system have 149MB packages as waste data IMHO.It doesn't look right to me.

Feb 10, 2011I'm trying to mount a remove filesystem onto my own server. I am able to do this, however I can only access it as root, or if I chmod 777 the lot. Obviously I want to be as secure as possible, so I'd like to avoid either one of those options. Another option is to mount it directly into my home directory, but previously when I was trying out Ubuntu this caused Samba problems - and I was advised mounting in my home dir was a workaround rather than a proper fix.
I have root access with sudo on my own server. I've not set a root pasword, and until I need to I'll avoid it. I have a user account with full control over my own home directory on the remote server. I am mounting using fstab - sshfs#username@remoteserver:/media/sdk/home/username/ /media//remote/ fuse user,idmap=user 0 0
What I would like to do is without changing the permissions on the remote server change the permissions when they are mounted on my own server. I would like them to be in the group sambausers for example. Instead they are owned by root and in the group of 1024 (which I have not set). Additionally for this to work they would have to have 770 on my home server and 700 on the remote server....

Jul 18, 2010there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

Feb 16, 2011while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. Slackware :: Can't Use The Ttys
Jun 21, 2010I can't switch from tty to tty. When I start up (I use startx for X) I can't even switch from tty1 to any other tty at all. When I'm using KDE, and I switch to a tty I have to use Ctrl-Alt-F*. When I do, it switches to the tty and after that I can't switch back to X or any other tty.

Mar 9, 2010I have searched the web, tried getting support on IRC, and even tried some drastic measures that I came up with on-the-fly, but could not get satisfactory results.After installing the 2.6.31-20 kernel, I have noticed, that virtual terminals ( or whatever should I call those. The ones that are accessed by ctrl+alt+[function_key]) stopped loading. When I open any of them I only see a cursor and nothing else. I can take almost no actions: the only two things that actually work are changing between terminals and ctrl+alt+delete.
Eventually, I gave figured out, that this happens because getty is not launched automatically. After running appropriate command, each terminal can be recreated for the current session. Tried fixing this by creating a script that would run that command on each startup, but could not actually make the script to be executed (I tried making rc to run it, as I need these terminals to be present when GUI is not yet activated).Right now, I see two possible solutions: either make them autoload like they are supposed to, or work out a way for that script to be ran on startup. So, any ideas?Ah, yes. Also, the GDM now loads on tty2. Will it give me problems if it continues like that?

Debian Multimedia :: Compiz Extra Plugins Broken?
Mar 16, 2010I had a Compiz update two weeks ago, this update came from the official repository of Debian. So everyone had this update, this update did not had a positive effect. The extra plugins on both my desktop and laptop can't be enabled now. Such as Expo or the Animations. I can just use the basic stuff. There have been some partial upgrades ever since for Compiz, so I guess they are still working on it. But my question is; am I the only one?
