I have not seen this before and am not sure if it's related to the fact that this is a virtual machine and not a physical server or something else.

I did a 'netinst' today and de-selected every available option when I got to the 'software selection' screen (even 'Standard System & 'Desktop Environment') however after a fresh install, I noticed what seemed to me like useless / unnecessary system user accounts:
- news
- games
- www-data (obviously no Apache is installed)
I was wondering if there was a way to avoid this from a minimal install?
I'll start a fresh installation of a debian stable server and I would like to use LVM on this. So, I started to read lots of documents about LVM and found different flavors on partitioning with it. I'm thinking in a partition schema which might use LVM for those mount points that tends to grow in time, for instance:
/boot (primary partition)
/ (primary partition)
/home (lvm)
/usr (lvm)
/var (lvm)
swap (lvm)
Am I right on this schema?
so I just installed Squeeze Alpha1 amd64, dual boot with MS Vista using Grub. Everything seemed fine, but I'm apparently missing about 40GB of space. It should be set up as so:

I just recently installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my old acer Aspire 3000. Previously I was running Debian 5. Something it was great and all but I wanted to try out the "New Hotness" that is Xubuntu. The install went flawless and as far as Linux distro's go this is by far the most impressive. However, I have this problem with my USB storage devices not mounting. I've been all over google, in multiple irc rooms asking questions, and I cant seem to get anywhere. I can mount the devices manually with mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mountpoint. They mount themselves when I plug them in.
After buying a new PC, I decided to "reorganize" my former PC as follows:Initially it has been a dual (SATA) disk dual boot PC- one disk for each OS, while XP was fully installed on a single NTFS partition. Using Gparted I shrunk the XP partition, and created some Linux partitions. I've verified that the XP partition (sda1) is bootable. Afterwards, I removed the other (former Linux) disk from the computer. While doing so, I had to temporarily disconnect cables from both drives. Finally, I fresh installed Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04 derivative), on my pre-prepared Linux partitions. Installation completed flawlessly, and during the install, I've noticed that GRUB2 has been installed on sda. Rebooted and got "Disk boot failure" error.
I've checked the BIOS and noticed that the (single) drive was not recognized.
I manually tested from the BIOS and located the drive as IDE3. Saving the new configuration (F10) and rebooting- the HD gain is not identified (the CMOS battery is fine- keeps time).
Booting a live CD I can see and access all above partitions.
I have a problem copying my udev rules from other distro to another pc running debian. My box is running debian without any DE and I want my USB disks to be automounted based on the label; I believe udev is the nicest way to do this task.
Anyways : my rules are (copied from archlinux wiki btw)

I notice the directory is made successfully up inserting the usb HD, but the mount doesn't succeed. If I manually execute above command, the mount goes ok.
I've run the install to hard drive program three times over and each time I get "disk boot failure". I believe I've got Grub to install to the mbr but I am not sure.

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.
The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.
I have SSD drives without SCT support, because of this I want to tune /sys/block/device-name/device/timeout in order to force mdadm put these drives offline. So, I can see my drive like this:
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-OCZ-SABER1000_A22MJ061512000074.
Where can I tune /sys/block/device-name/device/timeout from 30 to 7 sec only for these drive? I don't want to use rc.local.
Can I create right udev rules for it in /etc/udev/rules.d?
I want to avoid any conflict with /lib/udev/rules.d.

I'm trying to allow non-root account to use avrdude to program mucrocontrollers. There are many articles online about how to do that, but it seems not to work for me. Every time i try to execute avrdude it says "permission denied". I have just bought a DVB-T usb dongle to watch some TV. The software I'm using is vdr, which has to be started through the /etc/init.d/vdr service. I have created a udev script that executes the service on device insertion. It works nicely, however now when I boot up the computer it takes ages to get to desktop. I believe it is because of the WAIT_FOR part. But without this part, the service starts too soon because the usb dongle has been inserted but the firmware has not finished loading. Can someone point out an alternative way to do it? The script is here [URL].

I have spent ages looking at similar problems but not not quite the same. I have installed 11.4/Gnome (x86) and wanted to use my GT430 card. I went here: 'http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers' and used the 'one click' install for current cards. All went ok until I rebooted and I got a 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.846578 seconds' message. I got five of these in succession until the 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors' appeared and it popped me down to an init 3 login.
So, I deleted the blacklisting conf file so that I could get back in to Gnome on Nouveau (which I did ok). I then noticed there was no /etc/X11 Xorg.conf file so I ran /usr/lib/nvidia-xconfig to generate one (which it did) - but it made no difference. I am at a loss know after spending 8 hours on this. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. My machine is still at fresh install state so even if I have to reinstall 11.4 it does not matter.

I am using a 3rd party kernel driver that does not support udev properly. When I was using wheezy I placed the required device files in /lib/udev/devices.
The udev in jessie does not appear to support this. Is there any way to have udev create these device files or will I have to create then using a script at boot-up?
I have a trayless SATA hotswap bay that is really terrific for quickly attaching and removing SATA hard drives. I'm trying to write a udev rule to create a symbolic link to the device node for the drive that is attached through the hotswap bay (/dev/bay -> /dev/sdX). This eliminates any ambiguity when performing destructive tasks (fdisk, etc). I'm running squeeze amd64. I've read through several tutorials and have it working somewhat. Here's the output of udevadm info for a drive attached via the hotswap bay.

This produces the desired behavior and gives me an fdisk-able device node. The problem I am having is that the "host" component of the DEVPATH varies from bootup to bootup. I'm just using on onboard SATA, host2-7, specifically host7. There is also onboard PATA, host0-1. It seems to just be random which "host"s are assigned to which controller. For example, the next time I boot the system, the onboard SATA will be host0-5 and the onboard PATA will be host6-7. In this simple case, I could just write 2 rules, one for each possibility and it would still be correct because of the different PCI addresses of the two controllers. But on systems with more SCSI (uh... libata, actually) controllers, a "host" file can point to different physical ports between bootstraps. This would be bad. Does anyone know of a way to write a rule to tie a device node to a specific physical SATA port on the motherboard/hba?
I have got a problem in the configuration of the network for my Linux box. The distribution is Slackware 12.2 with the 2.6.27.7-smp kernel. There are three ethernet NIC, one on the motherboard with Atheros AR8121/AR8113 chip and two on PCI card which with RealTek 8169.
I installed the module for Atheros which is the atl1e.ko and I defined the configuration for the three NICs in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf.
When I hit the commend ifconfig I see all the three interfaces eth0, eth1, and eth2, but the address are not distributed between the NICs as I'd like so I thought to resolve the inconvience with udev, but I don't know how to proceed because there is a strange situation.
If I control the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules I see a strange situation: Once the file contains nonly a line for the Atheros NIC but if I reboot the system there are the two lines for the two RealTek NICs and everytime the system is rebooted there is a change between these two alternatives. A detail I noted is that the two modules atl1e and r8169 are both always loaded, so udev has always the chance to detect the hardware but for some reason that I don't know something goes wrong. Another related problem that bothers me is the absence of udevinfo and udevtest. Have I perhaps to reinstall udev?
I just did a regular install of debian lenny on a stand-alone machine. Now I want to add some new mp3-software. Debian doesn't like it if I install as root. A regular gets other negative results:

I did find the GNU-compiler in /usr/lib/gcc. So what could be wrong with gcc, and what about gawk, cc and cl?
After upgrading our vmware template server from debian wheezy to debian jessie the output of the df command seems broken with regards to the root and /usr mount.We are using LVM on this machine.I've been searching for quite some time for a solution, but lack of linux knowledge is bothering me to get it fixed. The system seems to run fine without issues.
I can temporarily resolve the issue (untill next boot) by doing a lazy umount and a new mount of for example the /usr.I found a thread that something has changed in the way df presents the devices, however it is not consistent in our case (it shows a mix of both) and it seems to go wrong at an earlier stage during boot.Either show all dm devices or mapper devices is fine with me although I have a slight preference for the mapper names as it makes it more obvious LVM is being used.

I'm a beginner + in debian (ie I know how to launch basic command under a shell), and I very new to configuration problem.I have a running perfectly file server for probably more than 2 years that I never touch. That's the debian problem, when it's unning, it's forever, no reboot at all.I recently bought 2 new sata drive 1TB5, that I add to my system by adding to my old system a SATA PCI board without any problem.But, one of these 3 month old drive is already dead.So I try to replace it and that's where problem started.....First I did a#mdadm --manage /dev/md1 --remove /dev/sdb1, of course without sucess because sdb is dead

Lately I'm encountering a somewhat annoying malfunction: almost every boot, my desktop is stuck, HD red led is constatnly on, and i get a message from kerneloops that I had a kernel failure. I can move the cursor a little and slowly or not at all. Few violent reboots and I get a clean boot. Running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26-2-686 on a Pentium 4 2.0 GHz with 250 MiB ram.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am experimenting with installing a bare minimum, network capable installation of Debian Squeeze. Right now, I am having trouble getting proper host name resolution. I have provided the output of ping (which is able to resolve names), wget (which is unable to resolve names), and the contents of the files I believe to be relevant to the problem. When I installed Debian, I installed *only* the SSH Server from the list of available configurations. Since then, I have installed mdns4, dnsmasq, mdns-scan, and libnss-mdns to get name resolution to work with no success so far. All packages were installed with no recommends -- aptitude -R package name. What am I missing to get host name resolution working?

I just noticed after installing a new server with samba that a portscan will show the samba used ports. This server has two interfaces, a world address eth0 and an intranet eth1. The samba ports show in scanning either interface, even after I changed samba to listen only to the intranet (192.168.x) address.
I am concerned especially about the 139 and 445 ports, which could attract a lot of garbage traffic.This is Debian 5.05 default samba installation.Otherwise similarly installed Ubuntu box with two interfaces does not show samba at all, even though smbd is running and working just fine.

I don't know where the md0p1 and md0p2 partitions are coming from. My /etc/fstab and /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf both have nothing about this in them.

I'm new to Debian and installed it with Cinnamon because I want to learn some OpenCL programming in Linux. I have a Nvidia GT 525M GPU. Once the operating system is installed, I followed [URL] ..... article to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers. As the forum suggested, instead of creating an Xorg server configuration file, I installed Bumblebee according to [URL]..... article.
But when I restarted my machine after completing all the steps when I try to log in I get the follwoing message:
"failed to load session 'cinnamon'"
I cannot login as normal user or root.
I am trying to login as root but i end up with an error that says: su: Authentication failure
