CentOS 5 :: Kernel Yum Update Installed But Not Working
Aug 17, 2009I try to update my kernel to 2.6.18.128.4.1.el5 using
# yum update
After # yum update # rpm -qa kernel*|sort gives the following:
kernel-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5
kernel-2.6.18-128.1.16.el5.centos.plus
kernel-2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plus
kernel-2.6.18-92.1.18.el5
kernel-2.6.18-92.el5
kernel-devel-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5 .....

yum update installed:
CentOS (2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plusxen) and
CentOS (2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plus)
both are not working. I have to run the system using: 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5. Upon trying again #yum update it says that no packages are marked for update. Can I manually install the desired kernel? Do you know a reason why yum update is not automatically installing the proper kernel?

Sep 27, 2009after update to kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 one of the 2 NIC's of my machine are only found at 1 of 4 reboots. Using the old one kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 all is fine. This are the to NIC's:
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100 (rev 0c)
And the Intel one, makes the problems with the new kernel.

Nov 6, 2009I compiled my kernel, compiled scsi support into kernel, used the new kernel and initrd, the boot failed.Then ,i unzip my initrd, found that sd_mod.ko can't be insert, i added it manual, and reboot OK.so, why! in the kernel configure , the sd_mod.ko is set to <M> , but why it can't be found in initrd?

Oct 31, 2009I'm running CentOS 5.3 and would like to know what the "best" or "proper" method is to build a custom kernel using the generic kernel sources from kernel.org. Most of the references I've found talk about modifying the current CentOS kernel using the RPM way. I really want to have the latest kernel due to some important security issues that haven't been addressed in the current CentOS 5.3 kernel.

Jul 9, 2009The first server I installed installed fine. The second server, installed with the same config, went to "kernel panic not syncing no init found try passing init= option in kernel" error. I tried reinstalling but it keeps going to that error after install reboot. The storage is ISCSI connected via Intel Server Adapter, which allows it to boot from ISCSI. Not sure if that's the cause for the problem, but the first server is connected to the same ISCSI and installed just fine.
Is there a way that I can make sure ISCSI module installs during installation? Although I think it is installed since it's able to copy the files and setup /dev/sda. I just wana make sure that it installs during setup.
CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5 Home Server Power Consumtion? (features, Kernel Versions Etc.)?
Feb 28, 2010I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).

Mar 17, 2010I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

after looking around a bit i thought it would be better to get the sources from kernel.org directly and try to compile that one, but then i found it to have the exact same error. would be very nice if someone could direct me to a solution for this. i have the bwbar already installed on another server which runs CENTOS 4 , i installed it there AGES ago , so i dont really remember what was my method back then.
the CENTOS 5 server dose not like me installing bwbar on it for some reason. maybe its bwbar's fault?, im no coder so i hope anyone that got a clue could check this out for me.

CentOS 5 Server :: Centos 5.4 And Xen 3.4.2 Full Virtualization Not Working
Mar 31, 2010I installed the latest version of Centos 5.4.It came with Xen version 3.0.2 I think.I am running it on a Dell R510. It supports hardware virtualization.I was able to virtualize Windows XP and Windows 2003 server on it by selecting the install from DVD option.I was having problems trying to get a PCI DekTek card seen by the virtualized Windows domains so I tried to upgrade XEN to 3.4.2.I used the repos available from Gitmo and it went easy.
The only problem is now that when I try to create a "New virtual host" it only allows me to use HTTP, FTP option and not the iso or DVD option. They are greyed out. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and might know a work around for the Xen 3.4.2 problem. Perhaps a better location for the kernel or something.

Apr 13, 2009I installed CentOS 5.3 on my Shuttle SS-31T with SiS 190 network adapter. While booting the message "Bringing up eth 0 [ OK ]" appears. After booting it isn't possible to surf to an internet location (p.a. www.google.com). It's also impossible to ping other machines in the network. After typing ifconfig everything seems to be ok.
ipv6 is turned off
IP : 192.168.0.3

Jul 5, 2009U have spent 4 days trying to configure my router thinking that it is my router that is not working but when I go to my dynamic dns or my static ip address it takes me to my admin router on the local computers.when I type httpd it says it cannot bind to port 0.0.0.0:80 i checked it is set up to listen to port 80 this is really confusing me i am beginning to think the people who built my server did not set it up properly if i go to localhost or 0.0.0.127 it goes to the apache default page fine.I have not changed anything since it wad installed except the centos 5 updates any ideas?When i login my password is root and the password is the default I have changed nothing else on the system as I still have no clue about it.Just to clarify on my router I have port 80 and port 443 set to my static ip address is this correct or should it be the eth0 Bcast ip address?Can anyone give me an idea of what i need to check? On my router I have set up port 80 and port 443 and dynamic dns and static ip address.Sorry I am totally new to linux never used it before would be nice if anyone has any ideas how i can proceed with this.

I have follow the instructions from their site, I access the web page, but went I input my username + password my browser wait for ever and never receive any answer. It suppose that u have input the LDAP username and password from the admin. I had run the mmc-agent daemon as stand alone to see what is doing, but I see any issue:

CentOS 5 :: Centos 5.4 Grub Timeout Value Not Working?
Apr 15, 2010pulled up an old clunker and put centos 5.4 on it the other day. well the grub spash screen appears but i have to manually hit enter to select a kernel.at the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and timeout=5. this is a new install. so I tried changing that value to 0 and it does boot the kernel immediately but never displays the splash screen. so something is not right I assume. btw I see a message (loading stage 2) for about 20 seconds as the computer boots and I have never seen that message on my ubuntu machine, so I wonder if something is off there.

CentOS 5 Server :: Centos-ds Getting Memberof Working
Jun 17, 2011I've got Cent 5.6 using centos-ds.x86_64 8.1.0-1.el5.centos.2 installed via yum.
I turned on the memberof plugin, here's the section from dse.ldif:
I'm currently messing with the value on memberofgroupattr. The only thing that seems to do anything is with it set the way above, in the error log I get:
So if I'm understanding, it's trying to mod the user entry and the attribute isn't allowed.
Setting the memberofgroupattr to anything else gets me nothing noticeable. ldapsearch isn't showing memberof:
I've run the fixup-memberof.pl in /usr/lib64/dirsrv/slapd-hostname and I get:
I'm using ldapadmin from a Windows box to assign/delete people from groups. What I'm a little confused on is the difference between a group and a groupofuniquenames. I also see a difference when using the web gui (directory server gateway) in users. The gateway creates and entry while in ldapadmin I'm creating users. Not sure how that factors but the memberofgroupattr relies on what object class it is and I'm obviously trying the wrong things or something is busted elsewhere.
The error log isn't showing any other errors.
I can restart dirsrv just fine, nothing funny in the log when I do that:

Dec 26, 2008I'm running CentOS 5.2 on a machine with an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard.This version of CentOS includes kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5 The sensors chip on this motherboard is the ITE IT8716F and I find that support for this chip is not included until kernel version 2.6.19 (according to the lm_sensors mailing list).I've searched for RPMs for this kernel version, but can't find any. Is this something I can download and install from somewhere, or must I download the sources and build it?

May 31, 2010The 2.6.33.4 kernel (using huge-smp) does not work for my laptop. It tries to boot, but after the line (Freeing init...) the screen goes blank. No logs since the filesystem is not yet mounted (I think). I've blogged about it already (posted it here, investigated myself, etc) for the previous versions of the kernel. I've been following every updates on -current and most of the thing works well except for the kernel. The kernel that works out of the box for my machine was 2.6.33. Previous kernel that works was 2.6.29.6. Then it went 2.6.33.1, 2.6.33.2 however, I need to compile using the config of 2.6.33 to make it work on .1 and .2. Now, I tried the same thing on 2.6.33.4 but some cryptic error occurred while loading the kernel.
That all were using huge-smp kernel. Now I tried to compile a generic-smp kernel (of course with initrd). (I did not install kernel modules yet). It works and it boots. However, since there are no kernel modules, it freezes after starting xfce at runlevel 3. So my guess is that somehow, my previous problems were either config related or module related. I though that if I will as well compile the kernel module, it may work, but as I look at source/k it seems that the source for kernel modules are coming the install package from slackware/a packages. Sorry, just a newbie.
