I have a cent 5.5 server that I only have remote access to. I was wondering if there was a way to view potential updates before I issue the yum update command. I know that there is a notification in X that you can click on and will show you the updates before you actually perform the operation.

i am running cent 5.1 and would like to upgrade httpd v.2.2.3 to the latest 2.2.11 version provided by apache to resolve some ajp errors i am experiencing.
I searched but did not find any rpms for cent nor did i find any instructions on how to do this.
I work at a small animation studio with a server box running Cent OS. We have no IT guy... I happen to know a little bit of programming so I got assigned to look after this server box. I'm still in the process of learning basic linux using VMware at home at themoment.There are few things requested from me that are really beyond my knowledge at this time and I really need some advise or pointer to get started.Current set up- We have 2 servers. A windows server 2008 and a Cent OS. They don't work together... They are only acting like a central "hard drives" so to speak.

They set up RSync for us to get files from over sea and they want our file structure to match theirs.- We have 15 work stations. Not set as domain yet. We boot into Windows 7 for projects stored on windows server, and boot into Fedora for projects stored on Cent OS.What I was asked to do- Centralize user accounts. My boss wants both windows and fedora to log in using the same account. What would be the best approach to do this? We want the accounts to be managed via the Cent OS box. Permission to access hard drives on the server should be controlled as well.- Maximize Rsync. This one is really beyond my knowledge. The Rsync process from our clients sometimes doesn't go through. They want to make sure the process works as smooth as possible.
I have 2 server behind the netgear router on my network . win2k3 and CentOS development server, I have port forarded 80 to win2k3 server which i can access over the internet and is accessable. However I can SSH CentOS machine and portforwarded 8080 and 82 for web access, I can't access via any of the port, browsers says UNABLE TO CONNECT.. there is no firewall in CentOS machine.

I setup a remote web server yesterday evening, which had Centos 5.3 on it. This went well, and I did this mostly over vnc, to get a GUI. However, I hadn't realised that there was a pending cron job to 'yum upgrade'. So, come 2am, 5.3 turned into 5.6. I carried on the install today, but after some time (I'm not sure exactly how or when), I lost the ability to run any GUI system config tools that required root login. I also lost the ability to run anything graphical - emacs, for example, when I was already root in an xterm.
/var/log/secure isn't telling me anything. It claims that it's running the config tool on my behalf, but nothing happens. If I try to run emacs, I get a message saying that the X server isn't responding. Could this be related to the upgrade? It feels like a PolicyKit problem - I've seen something similar on 6.0 for remote access over vnc - but 5.6 isn't running PolicyKIt.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI setup mysql v5 on centos, follow all the instruction i was able to google for to enable remote access, I am able to log in to -h localhost and -h (external IP address) from same server, I am able to telnet to 3306 using localhost and external ip address, BUT when I try to connect from deferent server i get host unreachable error H3000 (113) and telnet also is not able to connect via port 3306 I covered all the bases but stii no luck. same setup works for slackware no problem and there is no issue with client.

I have read in the release notes that there is no SuSe Linux (SLES 10) support in Cent OS 5.x KVM or even for that matter in Xen.
Does that mean SUSE will not run at all or will there be nobody to support me? A complete YOYO scenario!

There are many many more lines similar to this but its obvious that a remote host was attempting to run my phpmyadmin page and gain access. My question is that since I'm a novice at running httpd what sort of things should I be looking out for in regards to security and configuration to prevent any attacks or is this common and should just be ignored? I do run phpMyAdmin on the server and have configured MySQL to not have blank passwords or user accounts. The database had no new changes to it so I doubt they actually accessed it.
Is there a safe way for me to configure my server for access from any internet connection as well as from my home/office LAN? I'd like to be able to access file shares, webmin, the router console behind my Gateway for maintenance purposes. Access to Server Desktop itself would be a bonus.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu Server (lamp+openssh) on a laptop in order to use it as a testing web server for my projects. After configuring it I've also installed the GUI to make things easier as I'm not very proficient using just the command line.
I'm using the wireless connection on the laptop to communicate with the router and my main desktop (Windows). I've assigned it a static local IP (192.168.1.99) in order to be able to access the sites on my web server from my desktop, and everything works fine.
Now comes my problem: I need to be able to access those local sites from a remote location (outside of my local network) as well. How can I do that?

While it seems simple in concept, I know there will be several issues I'll have to deal with. What I'd like to know is if anyone has recommendations as far as software to use and methods for securing connections. I'd like to have communications encrypted, which last I heard OpenVNC couldn't do (maybe that's not the case?). Also, I'm not really sure how the interactions between windows clients vs. my linux server and the remote connections should be handled.
