i'm using centos 5.3 i think i restarted in a wrong way my computer and the gui isn't working anymore, i tried to login as root in the console login and run startx but it seemes i don't have X installed. Also i can't edit /etc/inittab because i don't have emacs or vim, how could i fix it?
I've installed a new fresh Centos 5.5 ..and after a lot of work..something starts to work (X now works with the new ATI HD5145 using ATI drivers) but i've a serious problemThe ethernet controller JMC250 JMicron PCI EXPR. doesent work at all so my notebook is out of the world !!!Here is some infos:rpm -q centos-release
i am trying to get centos 5.4 installed and bootable on my 16gb flash drive, with persistent overlay using and ext3 formatted drive.i want to be able to boot into centos and be able to have all updates from yum, etc, saved when shutting down for my situation i cannot use vfat.
I installed CentOS. NetworkManager successfully installed and launched. I can ping any IP from terminal but I can't open any site in browser except 127.0.0.1 I can't open IP of the modem 192.168.1.1 in browser also.
first of all, ill provide you with the package name i got [URL]...i went to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/bwbar-1.2.2 did ./configure ; make
then i get this problem : [root@server bwbar-1.2.2]# ./bwbar ./bwbar: /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by ./bwbar) i have installed libpng & libpng-devel
[Code]...
after looking around a bit i thought it would be better to get the sources from kernel.org directly and try to compile that one, but then i found it to have the exact same error. would be very nice if someone could direct me to a solution for this. i have the bwbar already installed on another server which runs CENTOS 4 , i installed it there AGES ago , so i dont really remember what was my method back then.
the CENTOS 5 server dose not like me installing bwbar on it for some reason. maybe its bwbar's fault?, im no coder so i hope anyone that got a clue could check this out for me.
i have installed latest skype-2.0.0.72-centos.i586.rpm from the skype website. i have installed it at a datacentre which runs in headless mode the procedure i followed to start skype is
it seems the skype not working as i was unable to see this user's status as logged in from another skype account on a different system the architecture is: CentOS release 5.3 (Final) uname -r : kernel- .6.18-128.1.6.el5 uname -a: Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 09:19:18 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
I installed the latest version of Centos 5.4.It came with Xen version 3.0.2 I think.I am running it on a Dell R510. It supports hardware virtualization.I was able to virtualize Windows XP and Windows 2003 server on it by selecting the install from DVD option.I was having problems trying to get a PCI DekTek card seen by the virtualized Windows domains so I tried to upgrade XEN to 3.4.2.I used the repos available from Gitmo and it went easy.
The only problem is now that when I try to create a "New virtual host" it only allows me to use HTTP, FTP option and not the iso or DVD option. They are greyed out. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and might know a work around for the Xen 3.4.2 problem. Perhaps a better location for the kernel or something.
Agere got purchased by LSI and now LSI tech support claims there is no Linux driver for this card even though the literature clearly states the availability of a Linux driver.I have installed the firewire driver mentioned in other forum posts from ELRepo.
I installed CentOS 5.3 on my Shuttle SS-31T with SiS 190 network adapter. While booting the message "Bringing up eth 0 [ OK ]" appears. After booting it isn't possible to surf to an internet location (p.a. www.google.com). It's also impossible to ping other machines in the network. After typing ifconfig everything seems to be ok.
ipv6 is turned off IP : 192.168.0.3 Subnet : 255.255.255.0 Gateway : 192.168.0.1
U have spent 4 days trying to configure my router thinking that it is my router that is not working but when I go to my dynamic dns or my static ip address it takes me to my admin router on the local computers.when I type httpd it says it cannot bind to port 0.0.0.0:80 i checked it is set up to listen to port 80 this is really confusing me i am beginning to think the people who built my server did not set it up properly if i go to localhost or 0.0.0.127 it goes to the apache default page fine.I have not changed anything since it wad installed except the centos 5 updates any ideas? When i login my password is root and the password is the default I have changed nothing else on the system as I still have no clue about it.Just to clarify on my router I have port 80 and port 443 set to my static ip address is this correct or should it be the eth0 Bcast ip address? Can anyone give me an idea of what i need to check? On my router I have set up port 80 and port 443 and dynamic dns and static ip address.Sorry I am totally new to linux never used it before would be nice if anyone has any ideas how i can proceed with this.
I have been setup a PDC with samba+ldap, is working, smbldap-tools working, I can create users, add machines, etc, really cool. Now I have seen MDS from Mandriva, cool tool to handle my network, I try to setup MDS, but looks like something is not good. I have follow the instructions from their site, I access the web page, but went I input my username + password my browser wait for ever and never receive any answer. It suppose that u have input the LDAP username and password from the admin. I had run the mmc-agent daemon as stand alone to see what is doing, but I see any issue:
pulled up an old clunker and put centos 5.4 on it the other day. well the grub spash screen appears but i have to manually hit enter to select a kernel.at the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and timeout=5. this is a new install. so I tried changing that value to 0 and it does boot the kernel immediately but never displays the splash screen. so something is not right I assume. btw I see a message (loading stage 2) for about 20 seconds as the computer boots and I have never seen that message on my ubuntu machine, so I wonder if something is off there.
For some reason, no matter what setting I adjust in Administration or Prefrences in the system menu for sound, no sound seems to come from my speakers. I created a log file and I got this as the error:------- System Config Soundcard Log -------- Sun Sep 12 12:59:56 EDT 2010 aplay: main:583: audio open error: Device or resource busy
I have a Centos 5 server on my LAN for testing the websites that i develop. It worked perfectly until this morning , after cold start -up, it seems that my network card is not enabled . Everything works normal:gui and terminal but no internet access. I'll run some commands on my Linux box and write the results , by hand , to this forum .

I've got Cent 5.6 using centos-ds.x86_64 8.1.0-1.el5.centos.2 installed via yum.
I turned on the memberof plugin, here's the section from dse.ldif:
I'm currently messing with the value on memberofgroupattr. The only thing that seems to do anything is with it set the way above, in the error log I get:
So if I'm understanding, it's trying to mod the user entry and the attribute isn't allowed.
Setting the memberofgroupattr to anything else gets me nothing noticeable. ldapsearch isn't showing memberof:
I've run the fixup-memberof.pl in /usr/lib64/dirsrv/slapd-hostname and I get:
I'm using ldapadmin from a Windows box to assign/delete people from groups. What I'm a little confused on is the difference between a group and a groupofuniquenames. I also see a difference when using the web gui (directory server gateway) in users. The gateway creates and entry while in ldapadmin I'm creating users. Not sure how that factors but the memberofgroupattr relies on what object class it is and I'm obviously trying the wrong things or something is busted elsewhere.
The error log isn't showing any other errors.
I can restart dirsrv just fine, nothing funny in the log when I do that:
Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. I have found similar howtos for 5.4 and 5.3, but they resulted in the same outcome. I did find several posts with similar issues, but no solution was posted.[URL]..
I am in the process of building a new server on an Asus P5QPL-AM motherboard and an Intel E8600 processor.explain to me the difference between the two versions and what would you recommend. Also, is there any advantage of SATA over IDE hard drives?
I have Fedora 8 installed on my development server in my office, but I have CentOS 5 Installed on a client Live server. Here is the problem I'm experiencing: When doing the following on my Development server it hold my session perfectly and I get the results I want, however, when hitting my script on CentOS 5 I loose my session and get logged out. I'm not sure if it's a problem with cURL or a problem with session_write_close():
On Fedora 8, if I remove "session_write_close()" it times out and dies, but when I keep it in there it works perfect.
//**************************************************************************** // Set the PHPSESSID to use for cURL[code].....
I can ssh with password ok but after doing the whole key generation procedure at [URL].. section 7, it still prompts for a password. Here is the output:
[root@apvdbs03 log]# ssh -v root@aapxen01 OpenSSH_4.3p2, OpenSSL 0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 01 Jul 2008 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug1: Connecting to aapxen01 [10.0.1.20] port 22. debug1: Connection established.
i'm trying to use the ntpd -gq instead of ntpdate. The result is that clock not set. as below. However ntpdate is working ok and had set the clock correctly.this is the ntp.conf file:
[root@CentOS5 ~]# cat /etc/ntp.conf logfile /var/log/ntp.log driftfile /var/lib/ntp/drift server 0.centos.pool.ntp.org
this is the output of command: [root@CentOS5 ~]# ntpd -dqg ntpd 4.2.2p1@1.1570-o Sat Dec 19 00:58:16 UTC 2009 (1)[code]....
Also attached is the trace file, from the trace file, everything seems ok, timestamps is sent and received:
i am trying to run bind in centos 6 and bind keeps giving me errors every time i check all of the configurations. the named.conf file works fine but the zone files keep giving me errors heres the contents of my named.conf file
I'm having a sporadic problem with Firefox 3.0.3 on CentOS 5.2.After typing in a url and you press the enter key...nothing happens. It's as if the return key doesn't work....but it really does work. This problem isn'tassociated with any particular url....seems to be 100% random; and not all users are having the same problem. I've tried rebooting the machines and that doesn't solve the problem. Tried restarting Firefox, even making sure the processes have died, and that doesn't work.
I converted a PXE boot environment to CentOS 5.2 (64 bit). It is used to install various flavors of Linux. The default timer within the menu is configured for 10 seconds. Can anyone recommend a version of syslinux that is compatible with CentOS 5.2 (x86_64) in which the menu timer issue has been resolved?
I have installed CentOS 5.2 and tried to click on the application => add/remove software
I get some error saying Unable to retrieve software information.
Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repositoryc5-media.
What I did wat disable the repository manager and unchecked c5-media.
This is the only one I can see at the repository manager screen.
Then I restarted application => add/remove software
The screen came out.
But I am expecting a similar screen as CentOS 3 or 4 which display the package management by group of Desktop, Application, Servers, Development, System.
From here I could know what I have installed and what I have not.
