Jun 20, 2011i am not familialized with Linux i installed recently a TACACS+ server under CentOS 5.5 and it is working well but my boss asked me to make a weekly backup of the tacacs.log file to check who was connected at any time the problem is that i don't know how tp make this backup and how to make it automatic and also he asked me to change the default port of tacacs from 49 to another port does someone knows how to make it?

CentOS 5 :: Backup Script With TAR - Incremental Backup With Simple FTP To Another Location And Email Status
Jan 15, 2010After I spent some time discovering The BIG BANG of Universe and The Meaning of Life :
I managed somehow to create a script to make some backup of files on server and TAR it and then FTP the archive to another location FTP server and then emails result.
It also measures time needed to complete it and deletes archive older than XX days (set in find -mtime +20) and makes incremental backup every weekday and FULL on Sundays (which suits me bcoz no heavy load).
Files for TAR to include and exclude are in txt files listed each line separate name:

Jun 21, 2009I have 2 dedicated servers, one with RTL8111/8168B (rev 02) and one with RTL8111/8168B (rev 01) both running centos 5.3, the problem is like this, all things run great on the dedicated server with NIC RTL8111/8168B (rev 02) until we run backup (cpanel backup) after the backup is finish the server lags , no high load, just lags, the server is a 8 GB ram, i7 quad core, so there is no load problem or someting like this, the second server has also cpanel on it and it has no lag but it has RTL8111/8168B (rev 01) , we think that the problem is with the RTL8111/8168B (rev 02) should we update the driver ?

Jan 21, 2010I'm trying install TACACS+ server version 4.0.4.19 from sources. (OS OpenSUSE 11.2) On the ./configure stage i've got the following error message configure: error: Could not find libwrap. You must first install tcp_wrappers. But libwrap library has installed already. I see this by the output of ls command within /lib directory
# ls /lib | grep wrap
libwrap.so.0
libwrap.so.0.7.6
So i suggested option --with-libwrap=/lib could solve the problem. But it is not. Also i was tried make #export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/lib with no result. The problem is still there.
CentOS 5 :: What's Best Backup Option
Dec 24, 2009I'm running CentOS 5.4 on a Dell Xeon PowerEdge 1850. I want to back up an RHEL 4x web/mail server, 2 WinXP workstations, and 2 Ubuntu desktops....and I want them to go to my Dell LTO2 tape drive. What are my best options? I want a series of incremental daily backups and then a different series of weekend full backups.
I should have clarified that this is all in a small office LAN environment and that the RHEL web & mail server is another PowerEdge 1850 that is co-located with the CentOS server (same rack).
CentOS 5 :: Backup System When It Is Being Used?
Dec 25, 2009I am planning to implement a backup strategy to backup my basic system ,applications installed and the different configurations also of the personal data (From documents , music etc , to my photos , 3d design files etc) I have a Hard disk (well SSD really) of 120GB for the system (8GB Swap,30GB / and 60GB /home), one 750GB Hdd for save my music,photos,images and other things not related to 3d design , and i am going to buy tomorrow 2 hdds more , one of 1 TB for use only for 3D design , for save final images , models , textures , 3d related documentation and like , and one 1,5 TB HDD to use as backup of the personal data and the system. (One 500 Gb partition for backup system, and hold clonezilla images, and one for backup the data for example)
By the moment what i have done , is use clonezilla to save a image of / and another image of /home in my other hard disk (I save a image of system installation in ext3 prior migrate to XFS , and later , one image with the system migrated to XFS) and i have used Rsync to copy both / and /home to two partitions in the other hard disk , so have a copy also of clonezilla images. I think use clonezilla ,is useful to do each some time,so be able to have a fast way of recover the system , but i would like to implement a daily or weekly backup of my data and system , for example making a full backup and then incremental backups.
Perhaps for backup data this is a good aproach , but for backup configuration files , and the system in general ? , i mean , if i backup the things while using the system , could some files being not backuped , because being used ?
If i decide to install,for example, my new Wacom Intuos4 M tablet, for that i need to install the kernel source , and compile some modules and things by hand (because repository packages of wacom are a bit older than need for new intuos4) ,that will change my system and add new libraries and files to it.
If i make a full backup , and then incremental backups , each some time , if i have a problem or make a mistake when installing it or doing something , i have only to restore the backups via live cd, no ?
But if some files are being used , that, will not be backuped, so when restore it , that files , will be modern versions compared to the backup (perhaps that files would not be later modified , but who knows) and i could have problems no ? Perhaps a solution is have a clonezilla image of the system prior the first full backup ,and restore it fist to have a new installation ,with all files , used included, and then restore the full backup of the 1h later ,and the incremental backups until the moment all gone bad , to have the system working again no ?
So i don't have to be worried by files used by the system as long as also of doing online backups , also have a exact image of my system , that will make me able to restore it in some minutes and don't have to install all , by hand and remember what i had installed. Also that lets me to backup only , at least when doing full and incremental backups , the directories of the system that are dynamic, and change , and those that are static , backup them only one time.
CentOS 5 Hardware :: 2 HDD - 1 For Backup - 1 For OS ?
Jul 19, 2010I have a CentOS 5.4 installation with 2 Hard Drives [Disk 1 and Disk 2]. I have mounted the Disk 2 as a ext3 partition called /backups within the OS installed in Disk 1 [other partitions on Disk1 include / and SWAP].
I have a CRON job that creates specific backups of Disk 1 onto Disk 2.
This works fine.
My Problem : I wish to move Disk 2 to a New Box on which Iam planning to load the same CentOS 5.4.
My Questions :
1. Will Disk 2 be immediately identified in the new install and I add it as another partition in the new install ?
2. Do I have to perform any specific set of operations to integrate Disk 2 into the new Box ?
3. this kind of migration of a Disk partition contained on a Seperate Hard Disk cannot be migrated to a New install CentOS Box ?
CentOS 5 Server :: How To Setup A Backup
Jun 27, 2011on my server I have atMail and a intranet site being hosted using mySQL for the database locally, and obviously backing it up would be a good thing. I got the backup package from the list if you use the add/remove software called dump-0.4.etc.. can't seem to find much on how to use it, set it up, nothing. Granted I could be looking for the wrong thing which I'm sure is the case. As of now it's looking like a USB drive is going to be my only option, that will change in the future as this "project" goes further (we are a windows shop trying out Linux, and the next step is going to be adding another server that's a file server at that point we'll probably go to NAS for the backup and then transer that to a USB for offsite/secondary backup).

Can it be as simple as copying the smb.config and smbpasswd files back into the /etc/samba directory? That's what I am hoping. Only ancient versions seem to exist in any repository, which appears to rule out use of yum. Finding rpm packages also seems extremely difficult. And I'm not too clear what would be required to install from sources.

CentOS 5 :: How To Restore From Image Backup
Apr 21, 2011I have 4 different servers with exactly the same hardware. I set up one of them to have a centos install with all the basic stuff I'd like running on each one. I then created an image of the harddrive with the operating system, and stored it on an external drive. I used dd to copy the external image to one of the new machines. It worked fine, everything booted up as normal and with a few tweaks everything was great. The problem is that the drive is rather large (500gb) and it takes days for dd to copy it over. I decided to try a different route, I booted to a usb (using the linux distro on the ultimate boot cd pre-loaded with gparted). There are two partitions on the external drive, a small (100mb) partition which can easily be copied over with gparted, and the larger 480+gb lvm partition.
Gparted doesn't support lvm, so I used fdisk to create a new lvm partition on the new machine, and then pvcreate/vgcreate/lvcreate to re-create the same volume groups/logical volumes that are in the image on the external harddrive. I rsync'ed all the information over from LogVol00, and made the same swap partition LogVol01 (which took WAY less time). I disconnected the hard drive and renamed the volume group to VolGroup00 (initiall I named it differently, since linux doesn't like having the volume groups named the same). I can mount the LogVol00 partition and see all the files as they should be. But when I try and boot up, it doesn't even go to grub, I just end up with a blank screen and blinking cursor. How to make the drive bootable? Alternatively, a better strategy than using dd to restore this image??

I guess is b/c the os is updating those files or has them open. Sep 30, 2009this message is a bit long but I've been pulling my hair for 2 days now. I am installing Centos 5.3 on a Dell Powerege R610, x86_64 flavour. That part goes well. next is testing backup & restore. I've tried MondoArchive, that I used on other OS, but it fails to remount the LVM correctly, and disk formatting fails. Now, I am trying another way: boot with centos 5.3 i386 live cd, take the disks online, cpio to a usb file everything but: /tmp /proc /boot /dev /etc/fstab /etc/mtab
then, reinstall a fresh centos to erase the disk (crash simulation) and to simulate the initial restore I would do after a crash. From there, I go again with the livecd, mount r/w the logical volume, cpio -i all my files, and reboot. It sort of goes well. system reboots correctly - it loads all my drivers (even asterisk & dahdi and the T1/E1 card light goes green...), starts KDE, but from there I get an infamous error message preventing me to log in "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds" - looking in the details, i get this message "could not exe /etc/X11/xinit/XSession default' - but I dont think X11 has so much to do with it...
When I go to a text console (ctrl alt f1), and try to log, no luck either - and no time to see why. I've modified initrd to level 1 - there I get the single user prompt, that's ok - but init 3 brings me to a screen where I cant log (either with root or a user) - there is a clear difference between an incorrect password and a failed login - the later, as soon as I enter the password, I return to a login prompt Now my questions. 1/ how can I make a "system backup" of Centos 5.3 x64 -ie after a crash, I want an image tha t I will restore and bring back OS + Applications (data can be backed up separately) 2/ what is wrong with my restore thru livecd ? why cant I log into the system ?

We need to backup all the data, and then perform a restore on a clean machine, without any OS installed yet.
I look into many pages that says that doing a backup on linux it's as easy as pack all the files in a .TAR file. Unpacking the tar will restore the system to it's original state. Also, i'm confused because if we perform a backup and mysql has active connections, perhaps the database would be inconsistent or corrupted. In the restore step, do i need a live CD in order to boot up linux command prompt? �Can it be from any linux version, or only centos version?

I just recently purchased a license to run Symantec Backup Exec System Restore 2010 for Linux and the only operating systems that are supported are RedHat and Suse Linux.
Does anyone know of a nice open source solution that we can use to create backup images of the server?
In the event of a server crash, we want to be able to rebuild the server via a bit-by-bit backup image.

CentOS 5 :: Recovery From Crashed Hard Drive With No Backup?
Aug 4, 2010Recently I built a web server for my clients to host in house. After talking with the web developer they informed me that i needed a CentOS computer with Drupal for them to design the website. This is my first Linux install and after spending hours upon hours configuring the server with FTP, SSH, and configuring our DD-WRT router with proper port forwarding we turned it over to the web designers to start work on the website.
A month goes by and the website is almost done, at this point we go to make a full backup of the hard drive. Due to a hardware problem it fried the circuit board of the hard drive. After attempting to recover the files myself we opted to send it to a HD data recovery facility to recover the information. We have received back a DVD containing the 2GB's worth of data from the CentOS hard drive. It contained 2 folders one for each of the partitions. I can view and see all the files on my windows machine and it appears that all of the data was recovered successfully. I harbored some hope that i could simply reinstall CentOS with the same account information and then just drop the recovered files on top of the new installation and have it start working.
I then reinstalled CentOS on another hard drive in the same computer and used the same credentials for installation. After i successfully booting into CentOS i turned off the machine and connected the hard drive it to my Windows bench machine. After booting into Windows i was unable to browse the hard drive. After doing more research and installing Ext2fsd i was able to see the 2 partitions CentOS had just created, but only able to access the Boot partition. After more research i discovered the default installation of CentOS creates a Raw file type for the 2nd partition and that is why i am having issues reading it inside of Windows.
I then downloaded a copy of Knoppix to see if this would allow me to write the old files over the new ones. After booting up the CD i could only browse to the /boot drive(and im not even sure if this is Knoppix's Virtual /boot or my CentOS /boot).
My question is what would be the best steps to recovery for my scenario? Can the files be placed to the drive and have everything restored? Is the only way to recovery thru reinstalling all applications and reconfiguring from scratch? How difficult is Drupal DB to recover in this type of scenario?
