Ubuntu :: Active UNIX Domain Sockets?

Jul 27, 2010

After my first installation/ version of Ubuntu 64, I performed a netstat and noticed I did NOT have any Active UNIX domain sockets as I do now. After doing some research, I found this is related to MYSQL and server services which I am in no need of running and nor do I want to run if not needed. So exactly what are these services used for, which app is creating this and why?

Is it possible to remove the app or processes if they are not needed? Killing these connections every time they attempt to establish would be rhetorical.

~$ uname -a
Linux panda 2.6.32-24-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 5 09:20:59 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
:~$ netstat | more

General :: Netstat Command - Active Internet Connections / Domain Sockets?

Oct 12, 2010

When I typed netstat -lna, the output:
Active Internet connections (servers and established)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:580 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
...
...

Active UNIX domain sockets (servers and established)
Proto RefCnt Flags Type State I-Node
unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 23581
...
...

Can anyone explain to me:
1. What is "Active Internet connections" & "Active UNIX domain sockets"?
2. What is unix Proto?
3. Difference between LISTEN and LISTENING state.

Fedora :: Attach A RHEL/CentOS System To An Active Directory Domain?

Mar 22, 2009

Attach a Fedora/RHEL/CentOS system to an Active Directory DomainBelow is a step by step outline of how to configure a Linux Samba fileserver to use an Active Directory domain for authentication and authorization in place of flat files. Note that this configuration has been replicated using Fedora 10, RHEL 5.3 and CentOS 5 since they all more or less share the same code base.me of the example server in this document is erver1.domain.forest.org, substitute correctly where appropriate. At the very least following packages must also be installed:

sambasamba-commonsamba-clientkrb5-workstationopenldap-clientsIt would be prudent to understand the underlying concepts of how Kerberos and Samba work prior to deploying this type of server. I find that SE-Linux will interfere with Samba services, particularly with winbind. I usually set SE-Linux to be in a permissive mode. It is possible to update the SE-Linux policies but that is outside the scope of this document, i.e you're on your own. In some cases I turned SE-Linux off since it was causing winbind to stop responding.

1. Set NTP to use the correct server for your Active Directory domain:shell> system-config-timeSet the primary NTP server to be your domain/forest NTP server2. Make backups of and edit the following system configuration files:a. shell> cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.bakb. shell> vi /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver dns_server1_ip_address
nameserver dns_server2_ip_address
search domain.forest.org

Networking :: Kill/disconnect Unix Domain Socket?

Jan 5, 2010

I have described my issue in detail here: [URL] basically, I am having a mysql server which keeps piling up on it's unix domain socket connections.

here's a small example of netstat as it looks now (count about 80-100 connections paired with httpd):

Code:
Active UNIX domain sockets (servers and established)
Proto RefCnt Flags Type State I-Node PID/Program name Path
unix 2 [ ACC ] STREAM LISTENING 3521428 12429/mysqld /tmp/mysql.sock

[Code].....

This is indeed a mysql server issue as far as I managed to debug it but until a workaround/fix is found I need to have my server responsive and the first idea that comes to my mind is to somehow kill those stray connections. as described in the mysql topic mentioend above, killing from mysql will not work. I need to kill them from outside mysql. I have setup a crontab script to kill and restart the mysql server when it cannot connect and it runs every 5 min. however this only lead to mysql being down sooner rather than later because in many cases just kill -9 and then service start mysql does not do the job (it's either part of the same issue of mysql or another issue). basically I need to manually kill mysqld instances a bunch of times until it's ok, OR, if that doesn't work, stop everything that is using mysql, wait a few minutes, and then start mysql. so I ditched that script and now I am manually restarting mysql server every ~ 24 hours.

so basically it's a pain. if I were to kill the stray connections however, I will not have to bother every day with restarting mysql.

When i try to join my Ubuntu server to Microsoft Active Directory domain, i get the error message below.

Kinit failed: Clock skew too great Failed to join domain: Time difference at domain controller I know the reason is because of the time difference between my domain controller and the Ubuntu server. But what i want to know is that possible to join a domain without time synchronisation? Because my domain controller is working for another time zone, for another Country, so i can not synchronise it with my Ubuntu server.

CentOS 5 :: Epoll - Sockets And Threads ?

May 20, 2009

There is a transient bug in my code which I just can't catch.

The basic idea is this. I have a multithreaded server and two thread pools, the IO pool and Worker pool. The main server thread listens to incoming connections. When it gets one, it dispatches a thread from the IO pool to read the socket. An IO thread reads the socket. If there is data, it invokes a thread from the Worker pool. This thread then finishes off the processing including closing the socket. The code follows.

Before I show the code, let me tell you what's happening when I am testing it. I have a client program which has about 30 threads, each opening a separate socket connection with the server. Each sends a request which the server responds to. Sometimes I have all the threads finish in a zip. Sometimes both the client and the server hangs. And yet at other times, the client gets a connection refused message.

Now the code. I have omitted some of the nitty-gritties, including possibly variable declarations. I'll post them if it's required.

CentOS 5 Networking :: DHCP: Option Domain-search (119) Not Supported?

Oct 14, 2009

I have an issue with the DHCP clients in a lab environment I am building. The lab is in a dns subdomain but the clients should be able to resolve any machine in the lab subdomain or the parent by using just the hostname. According to everything I have read, the client resolver should do this automagically, trying first the naked hostname, then the FQDN, then walking up the tree of parent domains. But it doesn't.

So I thought I'd just have the dhcp server set the domain search list to include both the local and parent domain. But adding "option domain-search" to dhcpd.conf causes dhcpd to fail on start up. Does the current version of dhcpd in CentOS 5.3 really not support this option?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Internet Connection Sharing Domain Name Resolution Not Working

Jan 4, 2011

I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. I also ran the configuration tool provided in the README section of the forum on the slave node and the master node. The links are:

CentOS 5 Networking :: Bonding With 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5PAE - "bond Bond0 Has No Active Aggregator"

Sep 30, 2010

I have two servers that have been running link aggregation and VLAN trunking for years. I've installed larger drives in one and done a fresh minimal install. In spite of configuring as before the network will not come up. I did discover that a minimal install will not install vconfig which was causing one particular error when the VLANs tried to come up and this has been solved by installing vconfig. However, at this point the problem appears to be not bonding eth0 and eth1. /proc/net/bonding/bond0 indicates: "bond bond0 has no active aggregator"

If I put the old drives back in and boot the old OS everything starts up fine. I was even able to get it working with:

modprobe bonding
ip link set dev bond0 up
ifenslave bond0 eth0 eth1
service network restart

however, it does not survive a reboot. Is the a bug in the 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5PAE kernel or the network scripts? The the previous kernel I am running is 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5PAE For what its worth, these are the configurations:

Networking :: Sending Frames Of Size 1518 Using Raw Sockets

Aug 19, 2010

I wrote an application that receives packets on one interface and sends them to another interface after it added a vlan header. Both the sending and the receiving is done using raw sockets. Everything seems to work fine until I get TCP packets that are of size 1514 (MTU). Once I add a vlan header to the packet, its size becomes 1518 and when I try to send it I get the returned value -1 and errno=90 (message too long). I tried to change the MTU of the NIC to a value that is bigger than 1500 but that fails. If I create a bridge using brctl and vconfig between the NICs I can see that my NIC does sends packets of size 1518. What do I need to in order to make my NIC to send packets of size 1518?
