Applications :: Open Source Alternative To Dropbox?

Feb 2, 2010

I am looking for an application that works in both linux and freebsd (windows would be a plus) that keeps a file tree in sync in the background like Dropbox does. I can no longer use Dropbox because it does not support FreeBSD (you might see a forum thread saying otherwise, but its fix is out of date). The application does not have to sync to a separate web server, I can host from my house, but it would be nice. A system tray icon to check on state would also be nice, but not required. The platforms that I really need are kubuntu 9.10 and FreeBSD 8.0.The simplest thing I could think of would be a script that had git update a repository with all my docs in it every minute or so, would this work?

Programming :: Need Any Open Source Alternative To .net / VC++

Jan 2, 2011

I refuse to use .net for any of my apps since I hate using proprietary code that wont work on other platforms without using emulation.

However, I do like how all the hard work is done for you and you can spend more time implementing, then actually coding stuff like socket classes, date/time classes and other wrappers to make the complex C/C++ code easier to use and tie with each other I have a custom library that I've been adding to as I need stuff, but then I got thinking, there must be something out there with everything I need to code applications, that is easy to use and more reliable and efficient then anything I'd ever make.

Does such framework exist?

Ubuntu :: Looking For An Open Source Alternative To A Program?

Jun 14, 2011

My sister works a lot with boating frame design, etc. and she needs a program that calculates all the measurements for you, but the program she wants only runs on Windows and costs $275.
Here is the website to the program: http://www.clearwatercanvas.com/ and/or http://www.kingrichardco.com/FrameBenders/EZFrame.htm

Is there an open sourced alternative to this program that is free, or is there a simple way to make an open sourced alternative?

Debian :: Writing Open Source Java Applications?

Feb 13, 2010

I always wanted to get into writing open source applications for debian. The only problem I ever saw was that I do not know C++ which seems to be the popular language to build applications. My expertise is Java and I think that java applications could run on debian just as good as C++ applications. What I do at work is write applications in java for unix systems so I think I porting my skills over to debian would not be a problem. I have not seen any applications in java on debian yet and thought people might have a problem with them. Is there any reason more java applications are not being written on debian? Also does anyone know of hand if there is any orphaned java application for debian. I had a look on this page but it is hard to know what language the application is written in. [URL]

Applications :: Open Source Voip Software For Ubuntu ?

Oct 6, 2010

Can anyone recommend a simple open source voip software in linux for pc-to-pc voice calls.

One requirement i that it should be simple with bare minimal functionality since I will be using as a part of a university project and so I don't want any additional features such as buddylist, GUI, etc.

Even a command line interface will also be fine since I am only interested to test different associated codecs/network characteristics.

The code should be simple with bare minimal libraries so that can be compiled easily.

I am aware of some open-source software such as WengoPhone but it seems that they have lot of associated features supporting different input devices with sophisticated GUI.

I require only PC-to-PC call functionality and I will be using within a LAN.

Ubuntu :: Synchronise Folders / FTP (alternative For Dropbox)?

Aug 31, 2010

I'm using a computer, and 2 notebooks. All off them have dropbox installed to synchronize my files, but i want more space. Luckily i have an FTP server at home, with more then enough space, and a lot off bandwith, but here it is: How do i synchronize a folder on my desktop/notebook with FTP?

All i want is a simple program that runs in the background, detects file changes, and upload it to the FTP. When a newer version is detected on the FTP, it should download it. When i delete a file localy, it should be deleted on the FTP, and delete it on the other workstations to. This way, every file is stored localy, so i can use it, whether i have internet access or not, and when i have internet access, it synchronizes everything.

On my desktop i run Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, on my notebooks i run 9.04 x86. I can use the command line (once or twice), but after that, i want the process to run automated (like dropbox). Is there anything like that available? I've heard about rsync, but that doesn't seem to be automated. All the solutions i've seen so far, don't give me the same options and easy-to-use-interface as Dropbox. This question has been around for 2 or 3 years on the internet now, so i suppose there would be a nice simple program around about now.

Software :: Where Is The Source Codes For The Open Source Drivers For Each Distros

Jan 2, 2009

We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.

To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

General :: Any Alternative Source Distro To Gentoo Without Space Taken Up By /user / Portage?

Sep 8, 2010

I sort of asked this question in the arch linux forums since I was interested in arch but I still have yet to get a response (maybe it's too early).I wan't something like gentoo but without taking up unnecessary space like gentoo's portage does (/usr/portage/). I find that to be a serious flaw with gentoo. Yes you can use squashfs-unionfs to help but it requires some work especially when something goes wrong with portage.I was thinking about arch but can you use it completely as a source based distro? Some people seem to have said it requires scripting and some work from the user. I wan't something that'll do it for me so I can set it and forget it.

I heard about source mage linux and exherbo but I'm not sure what to think. I'm thinking about trying arch linux and source mage but perhaps there's other distro's I don't know about. I'd really like some suggestions.

CentOS 5 :: Where To Put Applications Installed From Source

Apr 12, 2010

To make sure I have the latest packages installed, I no longer install anything from yum, I just compile them from source (or where source isn't available, from .rpm) directly from the application's website.

I was just wondering if there's a best practice about where to put application files that you compile yourself? Most of them seem to default to putting their files in /usr/local. What I currently do is then create symlinks from /usr/sbin, /etc/<appname>/conf, /var/log, /var/run etc. Is this messy? How should I be doing this instead?
