I have installed ubuntu 10.10 inside windows using wubi installer on drive "D".Now inside ubuntu I can excess contents of all other drives except drive "D". Why it is so? Is there an way to access the data on drive "D" within ubuntu?

My question is do i use arch linux to reinstall GRUB or do I choose none and configure GRUB to see both? if its the later can you tell how. Oh and Ubuntu is on sda and Arch is on sdb

- Two 1TB drives run in RAID 1, using software RAID (this is where i will store personal data, pictures, movies, music, etc...) - Lets call this RAID 1 setup drive B
I am planning to run a virtual Win Server 2008 using Xen and have that be my domain controller. I will use samba to share drive B and have the network drive map when user login to the domain.
- If for some reasons i have to reinstall CentOS, this pretty much mean drive A will be formatted and reinstalled. Knowing my self i probably will goof up some config in CentOS and will need to reinstall the OS to fix it. Since drive B will be the centralize location for my home network, i dont want to lose the data. Will i be able to re-setup the RAID setup of drive B and still have all the data stored on it intact after a reinstall?
- Is the separation of OS drive and data drive recommended?
- Are there any better way to accomplish my setup? I am pretty much just looking to make a linux file server and windows on client's end.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a RAID data drive for my system but I am having setting it up since I am a total linux noob.
The system has 3 physical HDD-s:
1. 320 GB (has functional Ubuntu 9.10 installation) attached to a PCI SATA card
2. 2TB on motherboard
3. 2TB on PCI SATA card
I want to create a software RAID1 of disks 2 and 3. So far I have used the Palimpsest Disk Utility:
- Created a GUID Partition table on both disks (2, 3)
- Used File -> New -> Software Array, made sure both my drives were included
- Once Palimpsest listed the RAID Drive as a Software RAID Array, I told it to create Ext3 filesystem on it
Well.. at least thats what I thought I did. At this point I have been able to mount the RAID drive and put files on it. However when I look at its information in Palimpsest, I am told that the drive is not partitioned. Both RAId components /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdc1 are reported to be in Sync, but the RAID Drive's own state is 'Running, Resyncing @ 45%' (and lowly growing).
My questions are: Is this a normal setup or did I do something incorrectly? Why is the drive reporting to have no partition? And howcome I can use it if it does not have a partition? I have found the command line based configurations to be a tad too confusing to follow, so I have tried to stick to graphical tools - is this a hopeless cause in Ubuntu or is it possible to achieve what I want to do without command line? I will list some info on my disks below - perhaps this offers more insight to those of you more familiar with Linux.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine somehow managed to accidentally format her USB key the other day. It had all the photos of her daughter on it and she's more than a little upset about it.
I've told her not to fret too much just yet and that I'll have a look to see if there's any way to recover any of the data (specifically the photo's, she's not overly fussed about the rest)
I've had a look through the web, and foremost looks like it's the most promising option but I don't want to start messing around with it until I've asked my fellow ubuntu users for advice and thoughts.
I have recently gotten hold of a device that helps me plug my old ATA/IDE hard drive to my computer and view my old files that I wish to recover. I am using Ubuntu and the harddrive that I wish to retrieve the data from also has an Ubuntu install on it. The files I wish to recover are old .doc files, which I want to keep to remember my old writings.
The problem I have encountered arises when I wish to open some of the files. The icon for some of the files, which happen to be my best writings, has an X on the top right, indicating that I cannot view the contents. When I click on the files, the following error message pops up: "Access to /media/c885571b-a6e5-4a2d-937a-78af7050910/george/Courses/hist388/Passion.doc was denied."
Now, I am guessing that I need to be able to log in as superuser or something to be able to access these files, so I logged in my terminal as super user by following the instructions outlined on this page: [url]
I still did not have the sufficient access required to be able to open the files that I would like to retrieve.
Could I please have some recommendations for Data Recovery of a Formatted Drive. There are so many choices out there that I don't know which one I wanna use.

The rest are below a MB. This system is not a dual boot so 241Gb is ext4 and 8.9Gb is Extended and 8.9GB is Swap. This system has been loaded for about a month, when I initially loaded it there was 230GB free.

If i go places > computer i do see a drive "250GB harddisk: 189gb filesystem"... I assume this is the free space mounted. However, inside that folder is "lost & found" with a x on it and i dont have permissions to write to the folder/space. I'm just looking for some advice on how i can use/access this free space. I have gparted live cd and i've tried several things but 2bh i don't know what i am doing.
I have a 1Tb Western Digital Network drive. I was showing someone the photos on this on their XP computer and noticed that each file also had a capitalized version beside. I assumed this was a copying mistake and highlighted all the capitalized copies and deleted them. To my horror all files have vansihed. The next horror came in that XP apparently doesn't move deleted files to the recycle bin it just deletes them. I rapidly went back to my ubuntu machine and mounted the network drive. However none of my normal recovery file methods work on network drives. PhotoRec doesn't list the drive. and sudo ddrescue -r 3 ~/.gvfs/SFTP for [myname] on [address]/[path] ~/LOGFILE tells me permission is denied.

I've set everything up properly and using the Disk Utility in my System Settings I've created a 1 TB partition which I want to use for Linux. View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to transfer files from a SATA hard drive with Windows Vista (Home Premium) installed on it. Some files I can easily copy over, others just say Access Denied.
I'm sure permissions is part of the issue, unofrtunately Windows is unable to boot at all (surpise surprise) so I can't adjust anything from within in. I know with XP drives I can easily copy and paste onto my Ubuntu machine. I'm using a SATA to USB converter that let's me plug it in and my desktop reads it like an external hard drive.
I've gone into the properties and under permissions it shows my account as having access to Create and delete files under folder access amd "---" under File access. My group and others show None and --- for Folder and File access. I can post a link to a screenshot tomorrow. I've tried to also select Read and Write for File access but it goes back to the dashes before I can apply it.
I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 and do not have the sharing aspect installed. Any questions please feel free to ask me.
I'm running 10.04 LTS (64 bit) During a recent attempt at dual booting Windows 7, the Windows installer made a boot partition on the wrong drive, formatting the drive, and therefore destroying all my data.
The original partition was NTFS, and the new (unwanted partition) is NTFS.
Is there something in Linux I can do to recover the data that was there, or am I going to have to install Windows on yet another drive and use some Windows tools?
The data on this drive is extraordinarily important, containing ten years of digital photos, my source codes, and musical compositions (protools sessions etc).

I reinstalled 9.04 but I don't know how to mount my RAID drive without messing with the data that's already on there. I have the UUID for the RAID but fstab isn't able to find it. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just want one last attempt at seeing if there's a solution. My Dell Studio 15 laptop HDD that runs Vista failed, I booted Ubuntu from a CD knowing that I should be able to recover my data.
However, Ubuntu can't find my HDD, it's not listed and "fdisk -l" doesn't result in anything. The BIOS seems to know that the HDD is there though.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to install Ubuntu (10.10) on the 1TB drive I need to unplug the SSD while installing it in order to dual boot by pressing F8 (the way I want it to be) so that Grub doesn't get installed on the SSD. What I want to know is can I partition the 1TB drive to install Ubuntu without any data corruption or anything? I have read that NTFS can lose data if partitioned with data already on it (I have no way of backing up my 100GB of files on the drive, as currently this IS my backup drive). What I want to do is have 900GB for files, and a 100GB partition (or partitions adding up to 100GB) for Ubuntu- what is the best way to do this? I don't need seperate partitions for ubuntu, can I install the whole thing to the 100GB partition and boot from it? Or do I need swap as well? I was thinking of making 900GB partition, 4GB partition for swap (if needed) and 96GB partition for Ubuntu (/ if I understand) as this is what the "erase entire drive" option creates.

I'm going to force a friend onto Ubuntu soon, and the biggest requirement is photo management.
He wants his extensive photo library backed up, and backed up some more, and then when all feels safe, backed up even again.
Currently, all his photos reside on a 4 disk striped RAID array, based on his cousin's recommendation. The intent was a RAID 1+0, but they failed, and that needs to be fixed immediately.
So, instead of going with more mirrored hard drives in a RAID, which I know Ubuntu will do just fine, I'd like to simplify and just do manual backups of each hard drive.
So, I'm looking for a program that could possibly be set up to automatically back up a hard drive onto another hard drive on a weekly basis or something like that. Ultimately, doing a manual copy/paste of the data in the drive could work, but would be time consuming.
I'm scared of RAIDs lately because of a recent fiasco with a BIOSTAR motherboard and how it set the RAID mirror on a set of hard drives for a Windows load that rendered the harddrives basically useless for anything but a RAID mirror, with that motherboard and a Windows load, and I almost lost a lot of data because of it.
I'm also not sure how well Windows would recognize a RAID partition created in ext3, if he ever wanted to go back to Windows.
My servers (10.10) motherboard has failed so to access my data I've taken the hard drive out and tried to connect to it via my ubuntu desktop (10.10). I've tried it in a hard drive caddy and installed in my pc, but could only see a 255Mb Filesystem with a few folders and files on it. how to mount the portion of the disk that I can't see? Ie. the part with all of the data on it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe other day one of my hard drives on my windows system decided to stop working. Not entirely sure what happened, but it seemed that it just erased its partition header, although I wasn't able to recover it.
Anyway, I successfully got an image of the drive using GNU_ddrescue (yay!), and I'm currently salvaging what CAN be salvaged with foremost.
way to get EVERYTHING off of the drive? I mean, it seems that it's all intact (since foremost is finding so much stuff).
I've tried mounting the partition, but it's not working. (I'd post the output from the terminal, but the forum thinks there is/are URL(s) in it....)
I currently have a 1.5TB sata drive connected to my system, with data already on it. In the next few days I am planning to use mdadm to create a raid5 array with another 2 1.5TB drives along with the one I already have. Is it possible to create the raid without losing the data on my current hard drive? Obviously it will be backed up before hand just in case, but it would be nice not to have to restore nearly a TB of data after raid'ing the drives.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server which had one drive in it that was using LVM. I removed it and moved it to the secondary bay in the same server, then installed a fresh new blank drive in the primary bay on this server.
I then installed CentOS 5.2 on the new drive. During the partition phase of the install, I partitioned my new drive and MAY or MAY not have removed the LVM from the second drive and left the partition there, not sure exactly what I did.
After install I wanted to try to mount the old drive so I could access the files on the old drive. The /boot partition shows up when I do a df -h but not the / partition where everything I need is stored.
When I look at the drives in Webmin, the second drive is there and shows up as LVM but has not LVM name.
Basically what I need is on /dev/sdb2.
How I might be able to mount this partition which seems to still exist when looking at webmin.
